There are no random encounters in Child of Light; rather, you see every enemy within the environment and, upon touching them, are thrust into battle. Child of Light's battle system is a variant of the Active Time Battle system employed in the Final Fantasy series. At the bottom of the screen, a bar shows how long it will take for enemy actions (and those of your own) to initiate; casting big spells or employing special moves will increase or decrease your attack timing, so planning is paramount.

"child, touch yourself in bed"
Did I hear that right?
-
:lawd This looks so good. Hopefully the battle system isn't too simple / boring

please stream it! it looks like a gorgeous game that I probably wouldn't have any fun playing
-
You better watch it, then.
-
:-[ I will!
-
Grandia battle system :noah
:'(
bought
-
Gonna wait for the rev.... ahh who am I kidding, I'll probably pick this up day one. Grandia battle system FTW!
-
You can watch me play it when I stream it on my Xbox One (tm)
-
New info:
The game has multiple party members, and they can be swapped like FFX
Unlike FFX however, you dont need to swap them in to get XP. Everyone gets it regardless.
-
Reviews are out now - some good, some bad. Most people suggest playing on Hard difficulty, as the game is generally babby's first RPG.
Still buying it, you can watch me play when I stream it if you're interested.
-
how much is this bad boy? I'm getting it no matter what but I'd like to be able to spend by Xbucks on it :-[
-
$15 - but I swear I read $20
So assume $20
-
It $15 on Steam
-
$15 - $20 isn't bad at all. I'm definitely down just for the battle system
-
This is out already on PS4, and probably other platforms. ONE version isnt until midnight or so.
It is $15 confirmed. Thankfully I still have $16.xx on my account.
-
Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssss. Gonna blow my xbucks on this. I assume it's not available for preloading on X1?
-
ONE doesnt support pre-loading, no
-
Smh, I thought this would be on Steam today. Would've been perfect since I have the day off.
-
ONE doesnt support pre-loading, no
super gay. oh well. I'll just buy it tomorrow morning before I head to work
-
I want in on this, it's so pretty. This engine is mad crazy.
-
Downloading it right now - gonna play immediately after work
HYPE
twitch.tv/frostitution
-
I bought it before I left for work this morning so I'll play when I get home :hyper
-
About to start, if you're interested in watching me~
-
i'm curious about this game because it's a turn based rpg but i honestly don't believe that the software house that farts assassin creed every year can do a good turn based rpg and i have an hard time taking impression from the internet because it looks artsy as fuck and the internet love anything that "SHOW WHAT THE MEDIUM CAN TRULY DO!"
-
I think it's awesome so far. Music is great.
-
Awesome battle music. I posted this and it made it that much more epic.
-
y'all should really go watch demi play this right now, he'll charm the pants off you with his uninterrupted silence and top-tier gameplay
-
alternatively: look at this picture (http://i.imgur.com/9XVtA6B.jpg) with demi and his lovely OST playing in the background
-
We'll I only got to play for an hour or so. I finished chapter 2 but damn this game is pretty good. The art and music are top notch and eh battle system is great. It's not too active so I don't feel stressed trying to control the flow of battle but it's not too slow so I don't go into autopilot with just pressing A over and over. It's perfectly engaging and is flexible enough to feel like strategizing is actually necessary. Definitely worth 15 bucks

He's not doing shit. Oh wait there he goes. He was just sitting in a battle for like 15 minutes straight. I'm thinking about starting up the PC version I downloaded now. I didn't know this was an RPG like this.
-
I was eating, you little cool young dude.

:rofl
If you're going to be so goddamn quiet in a stream demi at least bring me on for color commentary.
-
This isnt a game that doesnt deserve my interruptions - the music is so good. I'm listening to it on my iPod at work right now.
-
what part of uninterrupted silence did you guys not understand? he's trying to respect the ARTISTRY OF CŒUR DE PIRATE'S FLAWLESS COMPOSITION, FUCKERS. You don't get high-class gaming snobbery like this anywhere else on Twitch
-
Every one of you are now banned from my stream. Find your quality elsewhere.
-
There are a couple games I look up on twitch just to listen to, like Valdis Story, and avoid hearing people talk. It would be simpler to just track down the soundtrack but sometimes all the battle noises add something. Osu is another game where as soon as someone talks I switch streams
-
i'm gonna stream it today when i get home from work and yall can fuck off. how bout that.
-
Like magus, interested in how this turns out. Western takes on jrpgs have a pretty iffy track record. Mainly interested in:
-Battle system depth, quality
-Sub-system character growth systems depth, variability
-Story
Also, as an aside, why do all non-Japanese rpgs have to be "baby first rpg?" even popular wrpgs that are big like Bioware stuff is "hit X and sit back and watch your characters win". I mean I'm asking this rhetorically because I understand that any game trying to sell to the mass AAA mainstream audience will make it super easy regardless of the genre to appease the most players, but it's still a bit lame. Like even the indie Zeboyd Games rpgs I tried like Penny Arcade Ep3 and Cthulu are super no-difficulty easy.
I feel like the one one making challenging rpgs are the Japanese and maybe the Pillars of Eternity will be challenging. I like having to think of strategy to beat scenarios.
-
it seems like as hard as they tried, this is still a really Ubisoft-y game. Everything you list there isn't gonna be any better/memorable than other games in the genre, especially the story (which appears to be offensively bad as opposed to forgettable/good). The pretty seems to be the only selling point.
-
this game is ...
(uninstalls Child of Light, stares into the middle distance)
-
I'm near the end of the game. Streaming now...
-
How many chapters are there?
-
How many chapters are there?
zzzz
-
10-11
I just beat it. Got 1000. It was aight.
-
I watched him beat it. It was :shaq2 music's great tho go download the OST
-
So the game was a bunch of empty whimsy?
-
yep. just like every Nintendo game from the past eight years
-
was the last boss a tapeworm dragon or a griffin
-
a mixture of both actually
-
So the game was a bunch of empty whimsy?
empty whimsy. the game was ... flimsical
-
One of the most beautiful games I've ever played. Like a 2014 El Shaddai.
-
Raban can tell you about the amazing rhyme they had near the end of the game. Doctors will HATE you for it.
-
I don't even remember it. I think I have a mental block against that shit, but in the interest of comedy I looked it up. Quality writing right here, folks:
"But of course Aurora smiled
Before their eyes, astonished (emphasis on SHED)
To a mirror she led them
And they stepped through it instead"
What the fuck is that!? Astonished and instead? :trash :trash :trash
-
Cool lil game. Battle system is good, but I wish it was more Grandia. Up to the 7th chapter.
-

In the vein of Rime of the Ancient Mariner, emphasis would be placed on end syllables to make rhymes work.
-
The writing is terrible. Seems par for the course in video games for me. :yeshrug Game is fun though.

This is probably giving them too much credit.
-
That was their direct inspiration for the rhyming scheme though

No, they just suck at rhyming,
-
The game is alright, the writing is terribad, but it looks pretty and the music is great.
Battles become a bit one note after a while, esp. since you probably wont use majority of the characters.
-
you could probably do worse for a $15 game. Otoh, you could probably do a whole lot better.
-

Maybe it's like reading KW Jeter's sequels to Blade Runner and PKD's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, where you can recognize that the person is inspired by their source material, is lovingly attempting to do it service, but utterly face-planting in terms of execution?
-
Here's a trailer for the other game that was announced with Child of Light - Valiant Hearts
Looks pretty good, more puzzle based. I will probably buy it.

The writing process for this game:
http://youtu.be/DP5-qJSzDUg
Valiant Hearts looks good. Some nice animated beards there. Miyazaki-level beard age!
-
Really liked this game. Beat it earlier today on Hard. If they ever decide to make a sequel, they need to let you use 3-4 party members at once in battle.
-
it's amazing that you posted a clip of The Princess Bride, luc, cuz I was talking to brob during the stream about how he really needs to see that movie
