Gabe Newell: Linux is the future of gaming, new hardware coming soon (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/09/gabe-newell-linux-is-the-future-of-gaming-new-hardware-coming-soon/)
:aah :gaben :aah

Haha. I wish.
-
Sure, if the future of gaming is only, like, a dozen games
-
Sick of hearing about Steam Boxes. Sick of hearing about Linux as far as gaming. Both hipster shit.
Just saying.
-
After firing everyone involved in the hardware team and letting go of his trusty lawyer?
Sure Gabe, keep promoting your indie games hardware.
-
it makes sense that andrex would become the most insufferable of all stans - a linux fan
linux never was shit and it never will be shit, as far as gaming is concerned. spare us these 90s internet battles

I want to be there when Andrex has to get a shitty job at a company that makes him use Windows. I want to see that last little bit of hope and youthful optimism die in his eyes.
Then I want to nut in his face.

I can guarantee you that's never going to happen, lol.
I also used to be a big Windows/MS fan, lol. (Owned a first gen Zune, even.) But people tend to forget or ignore that.
-
Call me when Direct X is dead.
-
I can see why people are moving away from windows. Windows 8 is horrendous.
-
Even though most of the new features are crap, Windows 8 is still the best Windows ever made.
-
Gabe needs to shit or get off the pot. So goddam tired of listening to him talk about the future but never delivering any of it. Steam rocks socks but this future bullshit including Linux gaming and GabeCube needs to come to fruition and quick.
-
GabeCube
:bow

Shaka, I need the Britney version of :holeup stat. Because that's my reaction.
I've had Win8 break Far Cry 3 and other titles. So no. It isn't.
Is it as terrible as people make it out to be? No. Is it as good at Win 7 though? Fuck no.

Oh god.
But anyway, Gabe can blow smoke up Linux's ass all he wants; but at the end of the day, it isn't going to do shit to change the perception the OS has until the ENTIRE community embraces doing the same thing Steam does already (patches, drivers) for less technical people. Even then Gabe and the community has an uphill battle to convince devs (even former supports like Epic and iD) to make source-ports.
It's a pipe-dream as far as I'm concerned. Nice idea, but not gonna happen.

It's going to be an interesting future when convertible laptops get in the 350-500 dollar range and everyone starts snatching them up to replace their desktops. What happens to traditional PC gaming then?
Gabe is being pragmatic by insuring that there is still a traditional desktop available that will be made with games in mind.
-
Why would you ever game on a laptop? You get an inferior machine at a higher price. I have plenty of room at home to fit a proper desktop machine.
If you don't have access to a gaming rig you can of course play older games, or new games at lower settings, on a laptop but that's nothing new. You could do the same 20 years ago.

I don't think this changes the actual pc gaming target graphic much? Nerds will always get the more techy shit and people already buy computers less anyways, so I'm not sure what your point is? Why would a pc gamer all of a sudden only buy cheap chromebook-like laptops when he can simply upgrade his shit? What?

Some people work with multiple monitors at home. As long as I do, I'll always own a desktop.

Yep, I need a large monitor and full-sized keyboard to work effectively anyway.
-
I'm sure that thing gets GREAT performance compared to, oh, a desktop you can build yourself for $300 less.
Don't make me go to memegenerator and make a "stop trying to make surface happen" meme, McD.
Also, to go off on a rant here- I hope McD somehow finds himself forced to use OSX for all eternity. You guys that are fanboys of fucking operating systems are the dumbest fucking motherfuckers in all of creation, and that's saying a lot. HURR HURR, I'M GOING TO IRRATIONALLY INVEST A LOT OF MYSELF INTO A COMPANY/OPERATING SYSTEM THAT DOESN'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT ME AND THAT I DON'T WORK FOR. You two are beneath fucking BRONIES for the love of fuck. Get bent.

Relax old man.
And oh, I used Android, iOS and Mac. I know the enemy well enough.
-
You shill for an appliance. I just want to have said that.
-
The only thing I will ever corporate-shill for is OxiClean
- Makes sneakers look good as new
- Gets rid of nasty ring around the collar stains
- Godsend for making all your nasty gym equipment and gis smell SUPER FRESH
-
You shill for an appliance. I just want to have said that.
It's not shilling. It's believing.
-
Whatever it is, it involves no thinking and is fucking distinguished mentally-challenged. :stahp

:lol
My point with that pic actually, is that Laptops/convertibles are getting beastly. The desktop can be easily replaced with any decent i5 laptop out there + some docking station.
of course, I'm typing this from a desktop because I am a big ass hypocrite.
-
Linux is great for somethings, but it's never going to have the hard core push to be adopted that will make it ubiquitous enough to be ideal for big studios to spend a lot of time on.
And sure, laptops will catch up once the returns have diminished enough and some dude in a lab figures out how to stop a beastly laptop from burning your dick off -- it'll still be more cost effective to have a home rig for gaming.

Lol, everyone has their preferences and what works best from them in an OS.

Yes, not everyone becomes a fucking annoying evangelist for their OS of choice, though, to the point that they make people who barely know them prey that they die of ebola.

HAHA, GUYS IT'S FUNNY TO HAVE LOYALTY TO A SPECIFIC OS TO THE DETRIMENT OF ALL ELSE, INCLUDING REASON
Really though, hardly surprising behavior from a console warrior.

This meltdown is pretty delish.

lol. brand/company loyalty in general is weird as fuck and a big reason why I avoid most tech-related forum talk. young white friendless aspies looking for identity in all the wrong places smh

who me?

I'd buy a GabeCube because connecting my Steam library to a TV would mean I'd finally play something on it.
-
I ain't a fan of operating systems but Windows is shit. Installing drivers. :holeup
I can't see this working. Not because Linux or whatever but because the whole thing is essentially built around the idea of the Steam Box, and how many of those will they realistically sell? Plus Valve really sucks at programming and designing clients. How the fuck is Steam like 200MB?

Gabe is being pragmatic by insuring that there is still a traditional desktop available that will be made with games in mind.
Maybe for indies. But AAA development for Linux probably wouldn't target those laptops just like they don't on Windows right now.
Linux is great for somethings, but it's never going to have the hard core push to be adopted that will make it ubiquitous enough to be ideal for big studios to spend a lot of time on.
I can't see indies supporting it as well. The only reason they're doing it currently is because Linux geeks are throwing money at them in the hope that AAA/big-time devs will come to the system. It ain't gonna happen like you said.
It may get a little more support if Valve does make a Steambox Linux-only, but I can't see Gabe and company locking it down like Sony/MS do their consoles to the point where people would just install Windows on it for a bigger back catalog of titles.

That's actually kinda neat. Reminds me of those Mac Mini's people put into their cars for multimedia purposes.
And to make MCD happy: I kinda want to get a surface pro. But at that price? Nonono...

If the tools are there I think a decent portion will. The cost of porting to Linux is pretty minimal if you take the right approach. All the major engines support it now (CryEngine, 4A, UE, Unity). Indies are supporting it because it's easy to support. I don't think that will stop. I guess we'll find out more next week.

Here we go: Valve just emailed me to say it will make three (3) announcements next week. (http://twitter.com/geoffkeighley/status/381097222307192832)
:hyper

Last year, we shipped a software feature called Big Picture, a user-interface tailored for televisions and gamepads.
This year we’ve been working on even more ways to connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living-room.
Soon, we’ll be adding you to our design process, so that you can help us shape the future of Steam.
"Figure out this shit for us if you want it so fucking bad. Also, hats."

hope that rumored controller is one of the three announcements. can't think of something else that would fit my interests..maybe a really, really good wireless hdmi/video solution.
