Clooney dies
Best 3D movie I've ever seen. All those space sequences were :lawd :lawd :lawd :lawd :lawd :lawd :lawd
For the movie alone, I thought it was fucking great up until

Bullock gets into the Soyuz. The movie then becomes this lame mix of spiritual fake-outs, existential crises leading to this unfounded and unnecessary "I'M THE ONE! I'M GONNA DO IT! YEAH! NOTHING CAN STOP ME!" Last thirty minutes of the movie are just smeared with cheese.
B+ for sure, as AVclub's review suggests.

I thought the whole thing was pretty cheesy. There's a lot of cliches. Right from the beginning it's chock full of them. A nervous rookie accompanied by an experienced veteran father figure on his last day on the job. Oh and big surprise, he dies just before retirement. Sacrifices himself no less! The final act is definitely cheesy, but I don't think it's out of sync with the rest of the film. Story was clearly an afterthought in this movie.
For those who aren't looking at the spoilers, go see it for the spectacle. The story seems to be there just for the sake of coherence. Take that as you will.
Excellent movie. Don't have much to say except that you should probably see it (and I mostly agree with what Mupepe has already said).
Definitely think 3D is worth it. That Hobbit 2 trailer played in front of this and the 3D looked pretty bad and for a moment I thought I got suckered into this 3D shit again. A minute or two into the movie proper, I knew I made the right choice.

:ufup, Russia. China don't play that 'accident' game. Ryan and that Chinese dog will get their revenge in "Gravities"

The lack of human content to me kinda reduces impact; and makes it kinda empty in retrospect. I mean the plot is just kinda there, but some of the scenes had me just /spoiler]
I think that was sort of the point. As for acting...

Clooney was definitely Clooney in Space , but he's not the focal character so it's okay. I loved Bolluck though cliches and all. That woman came a long way and she sold her panic to me, cheesiness be damned.[/quote]
Overall, the whole was definitely more than the sum of its parts. Oh, and I'm starting Pilates tomorrow.
As for minimalist space movies, did you guys like Moon?
Also back on the subject of Gravity:

was kinda hoping it would end with a strange leftfield twist... like Bullock gets back to Earth and the Russian missile launch was the catalyst for WWIII that wiped out most of the planet or something fucked up like that... hence why NASA wasn't really answering her.

The scene where she gets into fetal position and rests for a few seconds.

no one cares if George Clooney dies. Except The Business, HA. He probably cried when that monotone Just for Men: Touch of Gray fuck floated off into the stars to die alone and asphyxiate and shit his pants

I also couldn't give two shits about Ryan's (Rian?) off-screen dead daughter. I know it drove some of her motivation near the end of the movie but it felt forced. I'm with Esch here, the entire thing did feel forced but I really didn't care because omg fucking space
Also, Bullock with short hair :drool

Also, 90 minutes of her panting and moaning and getting into her underwear and then getting soaking wet and muddy. :drool
I don't think I've been as exhilarated by a movie in years than I was during this. The sequences of destruction sent my pulse right up and my stomach in knots. Gravity may be one of the scariest movies I've seen as well. There are so many moments of pure dread and suspense and it manages to reuse the same basic setup three full times and each time ends up being just as affective as the last. There's one moment in particular that I loved:

She's trying to detach the parachute from the Russian escape pod. She looks behind her and doesn't see any debris. As she continues to work, in the distance, you see objects dart by out of focus.
That moment worked as well as it did because of the 3D and that to me shows how damned brilliant the director is. The 3D in this movie was fantastic and improved the movie without a doubt.
Going in I was down on the idea of Bullock being the main character. To my surprise she held her own. I was impressed that she's been able to turn her career around since the Oscar win. I hope she continues to pick quality projects.
I pretty much loved it. It's not perfect but the experience was amazing.
