Title: October Scary Movie Thread *lightning crashes*
Post by: Joe Molotov on October 06, 2013, 02:43:31 PM
First I just wanna say, they made a new Chucky movie and apparently it's pretty good, wtf?

http://bloody-disgusting.com/reviews/3246772/bd-review-curse-of-chucky-returns-childs-play-franchise-to-its-dark-roots/

It's on VOD now, Blu-Ray on Tuesday.

Now, anyone else doing horror marathons? My standard fallback movies are The Omen (my fav horror movie), Hellraiser I and/or II, and Evil Dead II. Hausu and Equinox may get added to the canon after I watched them last year. Other perennial favorites are In the Mouth of Madness, The Thing, Dracula (1931), The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Ring, The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Abominable Dr. Phibes. I usually try to pick some franchise to marathon as well (although I'm doing good if I can get past the third movie). I've done (parts of) The Prophecy, Hellraiser, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street; this year I'm doing Friday the 13th. I bought the 12 movie Blu-Ray boxset, we'll see how far I get.

I'll probably watch Bug and that Chucky movie too.

Already watched Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn a couple days ago, which is still highly praiseworthy. The next movie I'm watching is I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, though, so I don't know.

I'm trying to do #Shocktober

Here's the list I got from Eric P:

American Mary, Cabin in the Woods, The Innkeepers, I Can See You, The Pact, The Caller, Lovely Molly, The Woman, Devil's Rock (Nazi and American team up to defeat Old One, pulpy and fun), Dead Snow, Absentia, The Baby (oh my yes), Bay of Blood, Dumplings, Kill Baby Kill, Kidnapped (subtitles), Dust Devil, Dream Home, Hatchet For the Honeymoon, Head Trauma, Mimic 2 (really)

So far I've watched:

The Baby - awesome 1973 movie about a social worker taking care of a 21-year-old "baby." More creepy funny than horror, full of 70s cheesecake and bossa nova soundtrack.
American Mary - Did not love this as much as most, medical student enters extreme body mod underground to pay her bills.

Up next:
The Birds (somehow never seen), Resolution ("Primer meets Cabin in the Woods"), The Innkeepers (gothic hotel story)

Trick R Treat is a perennial favorite. I also love Tucker & Dale vs. Evil though I don't feel the need to watch it every year.

I'm going to be using that list too. BTW have you seen Kill List?

The Birds is the only Hitchcock film I've seen that I didn't like. Granted I haven't seen it in 4 years, maybe I'd appreciate it more. But I thought it was too ridiculous...

YES, Kill List is my favorite horror movie of the last 10 years easy. That was the first recommendation I watched and it disappoint. I watched it outside of #Shocktober, however.

Thanks for that Eric P.  Will be digging into most of those (for ones I haven't already seen).

My local theatre is doing a Vincent Price themed month -- all their movies are classic Price horror flicks.  Thinkin' I'll go there tonight to see Masque of the Red Death.  It helps that I get into that theatre for free.

Watched the new chucky a few nights ago. Man that was a blast to watch. For what it was, it was just what the series needed.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's the swan song of the series though.

I got the misses to watch Event Horizon with me after years of begging. She loved it and I always enjoy rewatching that great movie. I'm gonna steal some movies from your guy's lists and watch some more stuff. I wanted to go and rewatch the Hellraiser series (1-3) and a few other horror films before the end of the month.

these just popped up on Netflix today

Maniac;; remake of the 1980 original.  stars Frodo in a first person shot film by the director of P2.  Supposed to be excessively vile, but I haven't seen it.  Don't really care personally.

Wake in Fright; classic condemnation of masculinity.

Henry; Portrait of a Serial Killer - good shit.  the abysmal budge works in its favor as this is presented in low fidelity giving it a documentary look

  • [REC]
  • Red State
  • The Cabin in the Woods (new yearly rewatch)
  • Trick r Treat (yearly rewatch)

have seen and love the first three, just got recommended trick r treat at work today.  cabin in the woods was amazing to watch, at first you think it's just some shitty new age horror throwback, then something happens to change that, then something happens to change THAT. amazing.

I'd also recommend House of 1000 Corpses, there are 3 scenes in that movie that imo are perfect.

In the Mouth of Madness on Blu-Ray, yay!

I'm glad this is finally out, John Carpenter's last good movie, and one of my favorites.

Night of the Creeps is a fine piece of entertainment, as is Night of the Comet.

I recently saw Lovely Molly and The Innkeepers. Both are nice, low-key, slow burn movies. Enjoyed the creepy resolution of both of them. Lovely Molly does more with less than most low-budget movies.

Was going to watch the original V/H/S as it was last week's 99˘ movie on iTunes, but missed it, and probably won't grab it if I hafta go to the vidya store for it.

REC is next on my list, as it's been on standby for a year. May also watch Repo: The Genetic Opera, though that's not strictly horror.

If you peeps like Japanese horror, Honogurai no Mizu no Soko Kara is a great film. It was remade as Dark Water, though I didn't like that as much.

I like all of the REC series.  Even the 3rd one which really divorces itself from the main conceit of the first two

i'm rewatching: the devil's backbone, event horizon, the ninth gate, the ring, and in the mouth of madness. may queue up a few of the recent hellraiser straight-to-video sequels, despite my better judgment.

As long as you don't queue up the most recent.

i tried to watch The Conjuring.  Good god, I do not get the appeal that people have for James Wan.

He does so so so so well for the most part, like the scene with the sisters towards the beginning where one of them sees a ghost but the audience and the other sister see nothing is EXCELLENT, as it allows the audience to fill in the blackness with their own imagination but then the film turns around and ruins it by having the girl tell us the ghost wants to murder their whole family.  that's just goofy and it basically loses all goodwill that was built up.

the movie absolutely lost me when the evil ghost was literally crouching on top of a wardrobe and grinning like someone's grandmother imitating a cat.  it looks more like grandma got into the gin again than something of which to be terrified.

Just wrapped Sinister.  Interesting conceit but it would have worked better if 20 minutes had been cut.

I think it fell apart when the ghostly children started to appear in the movie.  The mystery aspects were done quite well though and I enjoyed that element.

Watched The Conjuring.
Decent. Has some pretty effective scenes like the one Eric P said, with the two sisters in their room.

Insidious is still my favorite movie from this dude.

I'd like to see the Cabal Cut of Nightbreed. Shout Factory is working on the Blu-Ray, but not until next year.

I'm watching some Rogar Corman-produced movie from the 80's, can't even remember what it's called but it probably doesn't even matter.
