I'm getting Y (better legendary, better mega evolutions), first Pokemon I've played since Platinum came out. I wish there were another 3DS games I wanted to take advantage of that TRU deal, but I'm pretty sure I already have everything that interests me. :-\

(I haven't legitimately played a Poke title since... Crystal?)

since everyone here is buying this, I'm eager to hear some the impressions from a more discerning crowd.

I want this in the way I've wanted every Pokemon since Blue/Red, but the originals are the only games that kept my attention past ~10 hours, maybe because I was part of its demographic back then.  People are saying this game goes deep with Blue/Red nostalgia, so maybe I'm part of its demographic right now.

Title: Re: Pokemon? Pokemon.
Post by: Tasty on October 12, 2013, 03:25:25 PM
Oh shit! and it only took them like 15 years!

Well, in Black/White it was tweaked so that it didn't interrupt the battles. Basically the same thing.

I'm too broke and distracted to dive into this now. But if I buy it, say, a few months from now will the community still be thriving and noob friendly?

(I haven't legitimately played a Poke title since... Crystal?)

Oh, I'll definitely still be thriving and noob friendly. (:phil)

A new Pokemon game usually eats up about 3 months of my life each time, sometimes more (took about 6-8 months before I stopped playing SoulSilver), sometimes less (stopped playing White 2 shortly after I beat it.)

Red/Blue nostlagia? How so?

I got Black 2 and found it boring by hour 10 as well. I loved Blue back in the day but I was a 13 year old so I was a target demographic.

Top tier:

Silver/Gold/Yellow (alongside of the remakes)

Top-ish tier:

Red/Blue/Crystal (ditto)

Middle tier:

Diamond/Pearl

the rest suck

himumu, the first mega pokemon they revealed was mewtwo, mewtwo get 2 mega evolution, you get one of the original starter halfway through the game and each one of them has a mega evolution and charizard being the most popular original starter gets two

i'm not sure how they have to hammer "remember when you played blue/red?" more than that

...this game feels weird

not bad weird, just different.  I don't remember my pokemon getting experience when I catch pokemon.  Also, 3D is battle only, which is...weird to get used to.  Controls are odd, too.

You get charmander fairly early and the stone early?  I dont really care about Mewtwo.  Reminds me of Freiza of DBZ.  I was gonna trade Mewtwo and mewtwo y stone and Charmander y stone for Charmander x stone.  But mewtwo is endgame.  No one will give a shit.  I don give a shit either.

Title: Re: Pokemon? Pokemon.

A DD copy of AC can't have its saves backed up with the 3DS backup tool. I've heard, though, that you can retain the save on the system if you delete the game and restore the save later.

Anyone willing to play long enough to get a Charmander on X with the X evo stone so I can have the badass one?  Also willing to be a bank for you to grab one of each starter so you can have them all.  I'd love to get one of each of the Gen 1 starters.  It doesn't take that long to get to the main city either, if you're really hauling ass.

That's what I was asking about earlier. Nintendo can lock down that feature selectively, like it did for DD version of Animal Crossing. I can't imagine they'd let you backup Pokemon saves - otherwise people could clone Pokemon and items to their heart's content.

Can anyone with a DD version try backing up their save and let us know what happens?

Had this happen to me in Pearl a few times and White once, I think.

Also I'm kinda mad that the PSS doesn't borrow whatever code AC NL used for the persistent online stuff. Sleep mode kills your connection and throws a big ugly warning up? What? Ugh. Hope they patch that so it's totally transient (doesn't the 3DS OS detect and connect to your Wi-Fi smartly when it's in range? Double ugh.)

Just got my second badge and already my starter is level 40/stage three. Don't know about the pacing in this game. :dizzy

I know the evil teams are supposed to be comical but this is pretty lame shit so far.

Gen 1: Pokemafia
Gen 2: Pokemafia sloppy seconds
Gen 3: Kill all people on land/kill everything in the oceans
Gen 4: Kill the universe
Gen 5: Liberate Pokemon except lols not really just take over the world

Gen 6: Be as fabulous as possible

???

Also the dousing rod is pretty inconvenient compared to the Gen 5 version, can't even rollerblade with it. Oh well, seems to be far less hidden items so far compared to the past two gens, and you can't use it in caves which is a load off.

Encounter rate seems good, a bit worse than DPPt but far better than HG/SS and a bit better than Gen 5.

City walking controls are shampoo-drinkingly awful (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/1528-Heavy-Rain). Rollerblade controls are sublime and might just be my favorite mode of traversal in any video game ever.

Frame drops during battle are horrrrrrrrible (and I have animations off!) but at least it's not slowdown like D/P. Hopefully they're cleaned up significantly by Z version or whatever.

Haven't touched Amie or Super Training (will deffo dig into the latter later, easy EV training finally!) O-Powers are named ridiculously and my team is already OP enough that I don't see the use. I guess giving it to other people is fun.

Ugly error message when connected to the internet but then going into sleep mode is ugly and horrible and should not be in the final game. Hey Gamefreak, see New Leaf's passive online component? Copy that.

Battle graphics are far better than I expected. Cel shading style fits the series like a glove and at times the models look incredibly sprite-like.

Updating Pikachu's cry but none of the other early 'mons (as far as I can tell) is such a tease. Not even Rhyhorn which is the first Pokemon you hear in the game!

Music is OK. So far seems a step back from Gens 4 and 5, but I know I'm early.

Customization is far deeper than I thought it would be, and I'm very pleased with it. The lack of it never bothered me in previous games but it's easily a great improvement to your connection to the game and your team, especially in multiplayer.

Seeing so many old Pokemon during the main game is a little surreal. I didn't expect Black/White's "No old Pokemon until the post-game!" but I guess I kinda did. I think it was a better way to do things, but if they did it here then they couldn't parade the nostalgia factor.

Kalos is a cool region but it seems to borrow heavily from Unova, at least so far. Just with fewer bridges.

Some of the new Pokemon designs I like a lot, others not so much. Par the course. Apparently there's a lot fewer this time around, which is a little disappointing. Hopefully catching them all won't be too easy after Pokemon Bank goes live.

The amount of rivals seems excessive, even if they're all pretty cool (I get the two female rivals confused a lot though. I guess the blonde one is the "main" rival.)

Looking forward to the rest of the game. :)

I'm playing this with my gf (she got x, I got y) and it's my first pokemon ever.  Trying to figure out how to play these games.

So it seems like instead of everyone in your active party getting xp after battle, only the pokemon that participated do?  And it doesn't split the xp divided on the number of participants.  This seems dumb because it encourages basically switching each pokemon in and doing 1 attack and then switching out, which just slows down the battle.  I'm not bothering with that though cause it's too tedious so I'm just figuring on not using most of my party and not having them level up and then when I get to higher level enemies I'll switch them in and they'll catch up in an instant with everyone else.  Does that actually work?

The battle system seems ridiculously focused on buffing/debuffing.  Like 80% attacks each pokemon have so far are buffs/debuffs and maybe 1 actual attack.  Some pokemon don't even have an attack only buffs/debuffs at their starting skill list.  Also the AI enemies tend to debuff/buff for half their turns.  I kind of don't like the latter because it just makes random battles take longer (I wish the game had a speed up battle button), but I'm more just totally confused.  Is this going to be challenging enough that buffing/debuffing matters?  Because if it's a generally easy rpg where it doesn't, then it seems like 80% of their move set is pointless.

Why does the main dude control like a tank?  Weird ass physics.

Graphics are really nice and I like the music.  Kind of lol that the game isn't even 3d for everything outside the battles.

I'll post my friend code when I figure out where it is.

Yes.

And it doesn't split the xp divided on the number of participants.

It now scales based on levels (as of Black/White.) Before them, it used to divide evenly. Now, the lower leveled 'mons will get more exp.

You should be getting the Exp. All soon which will automatically give 50% of exp gained to all your Pokemon (and that's 50% per each one, it basically makes exp from nothing.) You won't have a problem leveling after that.

AI's are too dumb to use buffing strategically so usually it's just a free turn for you to wail on them. Before the Elite 4 you really don't need to worry about having anything but attack... attacks.

Why does the main dude control like a tank?  Weird ass physics.

Play with the d-pad, it won't feel so weird. He's locked to 8 directions until you get the roller blades, then it's full 360 degree movement.

btw, how long is the single player storyline in these games?  Am I looking at a 30 hour rpg, a 50 hour rpg, or something much shorter or longer?

Pokemon White 2 took me 23 hours, but that was something of an insubstantial game and I was kind of rushing through it. Platinum took me 49 hours for basically just the story mode, and that might be a better comparison. The other games aren't good comparisons cause I played them for long after I cleared the story (Pearl = 263 hours, SoulSilver = 375 hours, White = 150 hours.)

I think 30-40 could be a good average. If you just play the story, this assumes you don't bother capturing mons, dont bother switching your team up (and the possible grinding involved if you do). If you go in not knowing what mons to use as well regarding weakness and strengths.

Someone on another forum I go to finished the story in ~30 hours, so that's probably a decent estimate. Pokemon games usually have a lot of post-game content too, where you can fight more advanced trainers, collect legendary pokemon (that are tied into the story), build a team for multiplayer battling, etc. Not sure what XY have to offer tho, I'm only up to the 4th badge and haven't read much about it.

I have six badges at sixteen hours, and I've tried to catch every available Pokemon in each area. I haven't swapped my team around or grinded though. I think sub-25 hours seems likely.

Nintendo acknowledged the Lumiose City glitch. Here is a map where you shouldn't save lest you feel like losing all your hard work (basically the outer ring)

Title: Re: Pokemon? Pokemon.

Oh fuck, I just got to Lumoise City and saved in the outer ring (basically the entrance because didn't feel like exploring the city)

Is this not a problem if you keep playing?  Because I never turn my system off, just sleep mode it while playing handheld games.  Lemme go grab the system and unsleep it and save elsewhere...

Btw, now that I've played more and gotten my first badge and rollerskates and exp share, I kind of like the game but it's more of a "this is a not bad rpg" and nothing is really grabbing me in a SMT, FF, DQ way.  Actually it kind of reminds me the most of Dragon Quest, because of the simple interface and the DQ 8-bit sounding level up noises at the end of battle.  The thing is that the game seems kind of easy (yeah I know I'm very early in), just seems like you use a strong attack to hit their weakness and kill them.  I'm not really seeing the point in farming pokemon yet, so avoiding grass and just leveling from pokemon fights since they are like EVERY 10 STEPS at some parts lol.

I have some gameplay questions to try to min-max the most potential out of this that I can for gameplay depth (aka trying to figure out how to destroy enemies as fast as possible):

1.  I know the pure elemental system is water->fire->wind rock/paper/scissors.  But what about the other elements like Electric/Dark/Bug/Flying.  It seems like Flying >>> Bug because I used a flying attack on the first all-bug tournament and killed everyone in like 1 hit each time for major damage.  But what does bug > ???? and electric > ??? and stuff?  Is there a list somewhere.

2.  So every pokemon has basically 2 elements?  1 = element like fire, 2 = the type of creature they are (flying/bug/fairy).  So for max damage you want to use attacks that are strong against both elements?

3.  All the attacks have PP, but you have so much PP per attack it seems like you should just keep using the strongest one.  This is without even getting into items.  At some point does PP become strategic and you need to watch your PP usage?

4.  Does it get tough to catch pokemon later?  So far when I do want to get one I just hit its HP into the red and throw a pokeball.  But some NPC said it's easier to catch them if you charm or sleep them.  So does it make sense to keep a pokemon around with charm or sleep to use on an enemy for capturing purposes.

5.  I like the game, but yeah, teach me how to get some good tasty strategic battle or character growth depth out of it so I don't get bored.  So far it's been auto-mated walk in the park, which is not bad but it's not exciting.  Doesn't help that the game is an rpg with no storyline so far.  Hoping when I meet the professor it'll get a story?

I'm pretty impressed by the graphics in battle.  All the animations for the attacks are cool.  Like I picked Fennekin the firefox to start and the flame sonic dash thing it gets has a damn nice fire swirl animation that would look great in any modern rpg.

thank ya,

ding ding ding ding,we have a winner... and well i can't talk for this pokemon game in particular but the previous one never got harder and if you tell a pokemon fan that he will answer that "THE ACTUAL GAME IS IN THE MULTIPLAYER ANYWAY" the closest thing to a challenge would be in the previous game...

where after finishing it you get a special mode that force you to make a team out of random pokemon and go through a tournament with stuff that you wouldn't usualy use but i believe this mode has been removed (or reworked into something different) from this pokemon game cause i heard people complain about the lack of it

Quote
But what does bug > ???? and electric > ??? and stuff?  Is there a list somewhere.

sure there is,here's a handy chart

general stuff you should remember

water and grass also beat ground and rock
electric beats water and flying and deal no damage on ground
fighting beats dark
dark beats psychic
psychic beats fighting
ice was the only thing that beated dragon other than dragon itself before they introduced fairy,it also beat's flying
steel resist almost everything but is weak to fire and fighting

Quote
2.  So every pokemon has basically 2 elements?  1 = element like fire, 2 = the type of creature they are (flying/bug/fairy).  So for max damage you want to use attacks that are strong against both elements?

it's not always like that, for example grass / ice is a thing, but yeah if you use an attack that's strong against both elements you get four times the damage but it doesn't happen with a lot of combination (the grass / ice combination for example takes 4x damage from fire) oh and if an attack is strong against type 1 but weak against type 2 you get normal damage (so fire would deal normal damage to a fire / bug pokemon)

Quote
3.  All the attacks have PP, but you have so much PP per attack it seems like you should just keep using the strongest one.  This is without even getting into items.  At some point does PP become strategic and you need to watch your PP usage?

some move have a 5 PP usage but otherwise no,if i remember correctly there is an item that restore PP usage anyway unless they removed it for this game

Quote

i don't think you will need much help for normal pokemon (some of them might escape in which case causing sleep on them before they do is essential) but legendaries are tough to catch

thank you for saying what's been wrong forever with pokemon and confirming that this game is like all the other one,and if it works like previous games, don't expect much of a story other than "evil organization want to catch rare pokemon for evil reasons"

all of the game before this didn't have a single animation at all,the pokemon sprite blinked when hit and some battle's would take forever even at max speed and with no animation and yet if you ask suggestion for gba/ds game sooner or later someone will mention one of them

Yeah, I dunno.  I mean most core Nintendo games that are popular have good gameplay behind them.  Like Fire Emblem is a pretty damn solid srpg even though the battle system itself is fairly simple.  The stage layouts and the challenge keep you on your toes and have good depth, especially with perm character death.  Mario has great platforming and level design.  Zelda...well it used to be good a long time ago.

I can see how with all those element types and ways to grow your pokemon, it probably does have a lot of depth in multiplayer.  But since I don't play MP and am just looking at it from a single player jrpg PoV, it just seems ok so far.  Nothing is really bad, but I was worried going in it'd be "my first rpg" and it does seem like that.  I mean the Paper Mario rpgs have interesting battle systems and fun stories.  Mother/Earthbound games have great stories and the battle system isn't half bad either.  Pokemon reminds me of Dragon Quest if it didn't have the story, world exploration and the battle system was limited to 1 on 1 fights.  Also that was another thing that caught me off guard.  For some reason I thought the battles would be party-based.  Never been too big on 1 on 1 battles in any rpg, always feels inferior to party based in terms of options and strategy.

The main quest in Pokemon games never gets hard because as you said, it's basically a "my first RPG" for 5 year olds. The most challenging battles only come at the very end of the game, but by then you might have a party full of incredibly strong monsters (like legendaries) that still make quick work of just about anything. If you want to make the main quest hard(er), you pretty much have to do a Nuzlocke (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Nuzlocke_Challenge) run which places lots of self-imposed restrictions on what you can and cannot do. Other than that, it's piss easy
spoiler (click to show/hide)
so it's about as hard as SMT4 :D
[close]

The appeal of the series for me is in collecting all of the different monsters, picking out my favorites, raising them as perfectly as I can, and trading & battling with my friends. Plus any of the post-game content that may be interesting, like the Battle Frontier.

SMT4 is balls hard for the first 8 hours, then when you get decent spells/skill selection it's pretty easy outside some instant game overs when you get back attacked.

It's worse than Nocturne, though it plays better and has a more interesting world.

But the worst SMT1-4 is still better than 99% of other games so that's not really a major diss.

my favourite things in SMT1 is how when you get poisoned the screen flashes in the ugliest shade of green you have ever seen every single step,it's the first case where a bad effect on the character (poison) will cause a bad effect on the player (blind)

It's so weird, usually Bulbapedia has all my answers (if some things still in Japanese) but it's so empty right now on X/Y stuff, lol. Plus they can't just ROM dump all the hidden stuff (or can they? Doesn't seem like it to me so far.)

There are dumps of X/Y - since you can run them on the 3DS cart (I think I believe they are working on this at least) - I suppose it is a matter of disassembling a 3DS image.

IIRC the 3DS uses AES for rom encryption and I don't think hackers have broken 3DS rom encryption yet. Might be a while before we see a disassembled 3DS rom.

Pokemon Transporter however is a fucking piece of shit that only:

1. Transfers a single box at a time before disconnecting.
2. Is HARDCODED to use ONLY the first box in B/W/B2/W2, forcing you to boot up the game every time you want to move more over.
3. This is kinda Pokemon Bank's fault but all transferred Pokemon are placed in a "Transporter" box that has to be cleared each time after you upload.

Diance is the first event Pokemon since like the 90's to be announced officially before hackers were able to spoil it. Kind of a momentous occasion.

Cracked the 700 mark on my Pokedex. :rejoice

704 bagged. :noah

Only 14 left not including Diancee and those other two.

Also completely bred and EV trained two Pokemon last week, was a snap. EV training takes 10 minutes per 'mon. Crazy. In the Pearl days it took me the better part of an hour (although I didn't have Pokerus...)

What is wrong with you?  This is like your third or 4th Pokemon, why would you put yourself through that.

:what

To make it easier for next time, obviously.

When Gen 7 rolls around I'll only need the 100 or so new ones.

And you didnt find it boring?  I have played like 5 of them never completed(as in the main quest) for 4 of them.  They just got boring to me.

The process of catching them? Yeah, it can be a little boring (leveling up to evolve) or even a little annoying (getting two hearts in Pokemon Amie for Sylveon is bleeehhh.) However, it's also somewhat of a nostalgic experience.

The benefits of having a completed living Pokedex makes it worth it to me though, such as being able to breed any Pokemon I want at any time should the desire strike me. It also forces me to get familiar with the new batch of critters which makes it more difficult to right off all the new designs as "not as good as the old days." You get more of an appreciation for new Pokemon trying to catch and raise them, which gives you a more rounded view of things.

And as I said, it makes completing future Pokedexes a lot easier since I don't have to worry about the previous generations.
