Title: Unrealistic targets at work
Post by: Cerveza mas fina on October 15, 2013, 06:38:53 AM
Just got my targets for the upcoming months.

Feeling totally unmotivated as they are very unrealistic, especially considering I have holidays planned which make them soooo unreachable.

Did you speak up about it? If you're not going to make it on time then it's better to let people know as early as possible.

This.  We have a system at work that lets us record a response to our yearly goals.  That way when our yearly review comes around and we don't hit it we can at least use it as a "I friggin told you it wasn't feasible" excuse.

Since I've been doing private consulting I've noticed a large deal of unrealistic goals by the parent company. Upon telling them of these issues facing their new company they've gone and done something I didn't expect. They've expanded and thrown tons of money into it so as to not stress out the small team I helped create. I think they've even gotten more out of the original team by doing this and have finished most project's on time or before they were expected to be done. Sadly I'm not gonna see a dime from their efforts, but that's ok I've got something to put on my resume that is pretty impressive.

Through email or whatever else, with as many people as possible.

Yeah I had my 90 day review at my new company recently. My boss said I'm doing well but I'm not picking things up as fast as he expected (which is a LOT of new technologies I've never used before... my last job was mostly sticking with old software tools and working at a much much slower pace). And that I should be doing more research on my free time (wait... what free time  ???) . So I feel ya, man.

Yup.  Also better via email with several people copied.  Always best to leave a paper trail so they can't say they don't recall you saying anything.
