Smith was actually awesome as an actor and a Doctor, but his story arcs last season left a little bit to be desired. That's disappointing, knowing what an enthusiast Moffatt has always been (usenet days etc.). The Great Intelligence arcs felt a bit under exploited... one of the best episodes last season was Journey To the Center of the TARDIS -- and I did like how they worked in his Silurian / Sontaran friends in the final episode that actually put people in real peril. If they can follow up on the finale with something of that darkness and bleakness, I'll be really happy.

My greatest hope is that they address some of RTD's lackadaisical shortcomings when it came to the bridging of Old Who and New Who, and his allusions to the Time War. If John Hurt's Doctor is that bridge, and it somehow gives an overall arc to the entire saga I would be ecstatic. Even better if it works in the movie somehow.

Moffatt also recently commented on the regeneration limit and that we as viewers may not have counted properly... if this was some allusion to either nullifying the limit or hitting the reset button on the entire franchise and starting afresh, I wouldn't be averse. I think WHO needs its own Battlestar 2003 or Star Trek 2009 moment, personally. A way to start anew with modern sensibilities, without having to kowtow to what came bevore. Kids don't need to be pandered to with silly moments like The Master pushing the Doctor around in a wheelchair to Scissor Sisters. Let's do this amazing concept properly!

I didn't think they were pandering to kids in that scene, as much as they were showing just how insane the Master had went.  Overall, I really enjoyed that whole story arc with the Master.

Then again, I always wanted to see the Valeyard and the Rani have comebacks.

This didn't happen in the UK btw... BBC America somehow felt you guys would like an Amy intro, perhaps thinking they'd snare a few viewers totally alien to the show I assume

Either way, Tennant->Smith felt like a complete reboot, relearning of the show that didn't come with the Eccleston->Tennant regeneration.  It was a little odd to me, but I was still okay with it.  It felt like a good point for newer viewers to jump in on.eventhoughtheymissedthebestdoctorbyoneseason

like I mentioned in the tv thread, if the Capaldi mini cameo had been the official reveal of the 13th Doctor that would have been one of the most epics and fucking awesome moments in tv history

I got pretty much everything I wanted out of it.

I went the cinema to see it in 3D -- I was sat next to a 5/6 year old and his dad. The kids father was really concerned about all of the noise his kid was making, but I didn't really mind - it was quite cute really. He kept asking things like 'where has the queen gone?', 'where are they now?' - and when the two TARDIS' appeared he let out a big "WOOWWWWW!"

The cinema showing had a turn-your-phones-off introduction with Strax the Sontaran... He had various humans tied up being water-boarded or something, and he was saying things like "THIS PUNY HUMAN DIDN'T TURN OFF HER COMMUNICATIONS DEVICE". He said that he enjoyed eating popcorn because he enjoyed hearing the screams of the corn - and they showed this close up of his mouth chewing some screaming corn. It got a good few laughs.

Then Matt Smith and David Tennant did an introduction about putting on your 3D glasses, which also prefaced some jokes in the actual episode -- stuff like Tennant calling Smith 'chinny' and saying his chin might scare the audience in 3D etc. I loved all that extra stuff, I hope its in the DVD / Blu Ray.

As for the episode:
- RTD had a bad habit of making irreversible decisions that were always going to need reversing, or else forever altering the show. Daleks being dead and gone three or four times, huge events taking place in the middle of London and seemingly forgotten later, entire worlds being moved or killed off, completely eradicating the Time Lords and Gallifrey and hamstringing future writers on the show.... this episode fixed that. It actually did it in a kind of clever way too, Moffat's best writing for a long time.
- There were a heap of references for fans old and new.


It was just great.

yeah, this was great! I'm still Doctor Who dorking out. The 31 Easter Eggs of the day of the doctor was cool to read. It made me go back and watch a few old episodes as a refresher. Great series.

I watched an Adventure in Space in time last night also, it wasn't too bad either. Also the Five-ish Doctors was another good short movie with Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, etc. Pretty amusing.

I thought it sucked that the Time War looked as dumb and cheap as any other BBC-funded space battle.  That stuff was much better left to the imagination.  I would've liked a Davros cameo there as well.

Other than that and the rather flimsy explanation of how the Daleks were destroyed ("crossfire"?) it was much better than I expected.  So great to see Tennant again, and the interaction between all the Doctors was well worth the $15 admission.  I was also surprised at how nicely the 3D was done.

I really liked it.  Capaldi and the special got me excited for the future of Doctor Who after being pretty bored with it for the past year or two.  I'm assuming Capaldi's doctor will end up being more mature and cool than Smith and Tennant.  It should be great to see how he and Clara play off each other, probably more of an uncle and niece type relationship.  Clara seemed great albeit wasted on kind of a bum series.
