Title: Nintendo 3DS XL buyer's guide
Post by: Wrath2X on October 24, 2013, 07:11:32 AM
So I decided after giving my brother a 3DS back home and not really playing with it much(this was back in summer 2012) that I might as well pick up an XL for the games I do want now. With Ace Attorney 5 out and Zelda on the horizon I think those would be great games to play for a while since those two series are all I played on the NDS.

I'm interested in Luigi's Mansion 2 and whatever else you guys recommend. Also as an inquiry if you know about a good deal on the hardware itself.

It would be very much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Using the slide pad feels a bit weird, but otherwise I really like the hardware. I only have RPGs, strategy, puzzle, and music games and I guess that's not your thing.

Well, this is what I own so far:

★★★★☆
Fire Emblem: Awakening - Excellent strategy RPG.
Pullblox (known as Pushmo in North America) - Puzzle game where you climb a structure made out of blocks. You have to push and pull them in to reach the top. It's very fun in the beginning, but I got tired of it 137 levels in.
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers - First-person MegaTen RPG. The story is better compared to many of the older Megami Tensei games, but it's missing some important features like skill inheritance.
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy - It's a fairly simple rhythm game. If you're a fan of Final Fantasy music then it's pretty awesome.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars - Another great strategy game similar to X-Com or Fire Emblem.

★★★☆☆
Crimson Shroud - I love the idea of it, but I quit playing it a couple hours in. The UI
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan - A first-person dungeon crawler. The game is very solid, but it's just more of the same. If you've played any of the first three games then you know what to expect.

I will probably pick up both Zelda games myself if I can find them at a decent price.

Definitely get Super Mario 3D Land.  Skip New Super Mario Bros. 2.

Fire Emblem and Tales of the Abyss were good, too. For Virtual Console, there's Link's Awakening DX and the Oracle games. From the eShop, I liked Mutant Mudds and Crashmo.

Fire Emblem
Mario 3D
Zelda: OoT
Luigis Mansion 2

All four of those are solid.

What am I missing in my lineup? I feel I've covered most of the bases.

re: MH3G - lets put this to bed - MH3G was great if you didn't play the Wii game or 3rdP - but if you did it was basically "oh ... i see" - MH4 is IN YOUR FACE good. So let us put MH3G where it belongs : in a dark dank cupboard - hell, even capcom didnt give a shit - they outsourced that thang total.

3DS is archaic hardware with stupid region locking but it is virtually impossible to argue with its software line up.

eeeeehhh i'm interessed in bravely default, monster hunter 4,ace attorney 5 (which by the way if i understand correctly as been out since yesterday or something similiar) and maybe rune factory 4 (i really liked 3) as someone who don't really give a shit about nintendo games and just give a minor shit when it comes to atlus stuff that seems to knock like 75% of the 3DS lineup that seems to pop often in these thread

I've only gotten one since the release of SMT4 but so far I've quite liked
Luigi's Mansion 2
Mario 3D World
Ghost Recon
Steamworld Dig

Sadly wasn't into SMT4 though I loved other entries in my youth.  I just dont' have the time or attention span for a game like that.

I want to get the Mario and Luigi Dream RPG but I know it is also long as hell

It does drag a bit. I finished it in about 30 hrs - didnt really grind - no need. If you die on a boss/battle you can retry it in "easy" mode.
