Title: Rougelikes for Dummies. Where should I continue my journey?
Post by: Rman on November 13, 2013, 12:32:06 PM
I'm really enjoying Spelunky on XBLA and wanted to know what other games in this genres I'm missing.

Spelunky is kind of it's own thing. Part platformer-part roguelike. Most of the really good ones are turn-based or from a top down perspective. So, you might not like them for that reason.

The greatest (traditional) roguelike is Stone Soup Dungeon Crawl. Small enough to throw on a flash drive and play at work.  :-*

Shiren the Wanderer (DS/WII) is a good console variant (still turn-based).

FTL is evidently awesome, but I am waiting for the IOS release.

There was that female ninja boobie game for the Nintendo DS...can't remember. I think it was OK.

FTL and Sword of the Stars: The Pit are a good place to go next.

Rogue Legacy is a nice 10 or so hour romp with enough light roguelike elements that some who had fun playing Spelunky would enjoy it.

FTL is a must play.

I love Sword of the Stars: The Pit, but that game is super evil. It hates you, your family, and everyone you went to school with.

Rogue Legacy and FTL are the correct next steps. I would not recommend Shiren, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, etc.

spelunky has roguelike element (permanent death, randomized element) but it's not exactly a roguelike as roguelike are more like turn based games that rely upon learning on your fuck ups than anything else so i'm not sure you would like them

with that said the roguelike i suggest everybody and love so freaking much, that i can easily write a wall of china-like text is shiren the wanderer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYruBkhKjmw

there is a snes version which got fantranslated, and a DS one which is mostly the same but feature some change and added extra that aren't really needed... there is also a wii version but it's not very good and i would skip it in favor of the original, alternatively if you like final fantasy there is a chocobo one,two in fact! the one on psx is pretty clunky but the wii one is good if a little too simple,it also features tons of kickass final fantasy remix

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4TqA8lgQic

oh and a pokemon one, there have been 2 on the DS and 1 on the 3DS,they aren't that great but i guess if you are into pokeyman...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP6JjaQJaq4

if you want game with roguelike element there is FTL,i hate it but i'm in the minority

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-SnIhpCm5w

or alternatively there is desktop dungeons which combine roguelike and puzzle game element

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNA6vvEfhoQ

coincidentaly the video above is the freeware version and a week ago a new paid version which adds better graphics and tons of new feature has been released

if you decide to pick shiren the wanderer (you should) ask me anything, because i know EVERYTHING about it

I would not recommend Shiren

you fucking hitler! you shame that metal dragon avatar with your filty words

SHAME!

oh yeah forgot about rogue legacy, that game combine metroid vania element and rogue like element so it sounds like a decent step up after spelunky

Scarab of Ra is legendary, if you can run the thing. (only available as a .sea file, wont execute as Apple removed .sea support from OSX :piss)

I love Sword of the Stars: The Pit, but that game is super evil. It hates you, your family, and everyone you went to school with.

Possibly my favourite game of the year, it's just ball bustingly hard. So many games I had 800+ ammo, but no weapons to fire them with. Or those motherfucking adaptoids. I really should get the Gold Edition.

FTL and BoI must plays. Dungeons of Dredmore is pretty good too but I prefer SotS: The Pit.

I almost bit on Sword of the Stars because it was $2 on GoG one of the times I checked their insomniac sale, but I think I am at a dead stop when it comes to buying games. I've managed to not buy the WB Humble Bundle.

Gold Edition has a lot of cool stuff, have been enjoying it. Two of the three classes added are not really playable right now though, Mecron and crew should be tuning that this week.

Volgarr is a Ghosts n Goblinslike ... not a Roguelike at all. I mean it's a great game, but...

Really? I found it enjoyable. Pokemon-themed Nethack-but-lighter/streamlined/idiot-proofed was pretty enjoyable to me.
