Title: How do you guys deal with your internet profiles/privacy?
Post by: Skidmark on November 17, 2013, 10:58:27 AM
I feel that I am missing out on twitter because i have this constant worry that my real identity can be found out by putting the pieces together. Not that I have anything to hide but i am just worried i can end up in a situation that i can't get myself out of, all of this internet witch hunting makes me paranoid about the traces i leave.

How do you guys deal with this? do you create separate accounts or do you just not care?

Most people have no real understanding that what you say or do on the internet is public information.  For 99% of people, that doesn't mean anything but people who have an interest in running for political office or in a Fortune 500 board room better watch themselves.

Or in 50 years, you'll be able to vote for someone based off of their tastes in porn, what videos they liked on Youtube, and their nude selfies on an old imgur account.

lucky bastard. I am a little bit of a perfectionist too which sucks big time. It's either that i have 'The twitter account' or no twitter account at all. I feel that i can't live with anything in between. A commit or avoid situation. :/

This thought just cripples me by fueling the perfectionist in me. I hate it. I am kind of jealous of my girlfriends who can tweet about whatever the fuck comes to their mind.

Having finally gotten some work experience i am happy to know that my boss really doesn't give a fuck about what i do on my free time as long as i show up sober to work on time. I am also happy to know that I will never be a public figure.

I use separate accounts for real-life matters and unimportant things like video game forums. As Mary Tyler Whore mentioned this is public information so don't post anything you're not comfortable with seeing on a tabloid front page.

Does that really work? practically?

Some people have seen my real name from gifting/trading but I trust them to not post my name or any personal information on the board. Otherwise it's pretty easy to keep things apart.

I just don't get too personal online.

At this point it's pretty silly to go to such an extent to hide yourself. You're out there really isn't anything wrong with that.

Either don't post stuff you know you'll regret later or just don't bother caring.

in general I tend to lurk more and post less as I get older. I worked in the hiring department at one of my old jobs, and one of my regular duties was to research the online activity of applicants. it could get pretty invasive.

maybe I'm just paranoid.

YouTube/Google is getting really obnoxious about the whole real name thing. it's at the point where I'm considering making a separate email for YouTube comments and favorites.

I have an incredibly singular name.  Google searching it gives you hits to all of my social media accounts, on which some embarrassing, stupid shit has been posted.

Whatever, though.  Still don't care.

Like 10 years ago I had a stalker. I haven't heard a peep from them in nearly as long but as a result I'm still very paranoid about being online and worrying that somehow (no matter how slight the chance) I would pop back up on their radar and the harassment of me and my family would begin again.

Anyway I never put personal stuff online outside maybe my city. Never pictures and no facebook profile either. Even my gaf/bore name, twitter, PSN/Steam account, email are all different names.

That said its been so long since then that lately I've been thinking I should just get over it and open up some.

When you search my name on facebook the first result is some pot smoking homophobic jackass. I hope employers don't think thats me :(

I don't use my real name on anything, including Facebook. It's not hard to make yourself invulnerable to a doxx.

Just use common sense.

If you're really worried and have no self restraint don't use it.

My twitter account mainly talks about Golden State and some vidya games, and also making fun of cajole when he's drunk.

I have a different surname on things like Facebook and Twitter. There's nothing too bad on either them. This name though I try and keep anonymous. Hopefully only a couple of IRL friends that post here can connect it to me, although there's enough posted over the years that with enough knowledge about me and effort someone could probably make a match.

Don't look now, but I think I found him for you!  :o :o :o

Sorry -- I know I shouldn't poke fun. I had one in college and it freaked me the hell out.

I suspect that The Business is the only one here who has an airtight approach: be real and honest and don't say stupid shit that you'll regret. If someone's really determined to find out who you are, there are plenty of ways to go about it. Having multiple IDs is like having locks on your front door; it is a good deterrent, but won't stop a determined aggressor.

The people who think that the stuff they say online can't be traced to them, and that they can't be held accountable for it are going to be sadly surprised in the long run.

Facebook, all posts set to friends-only.

Twitter, public but thought put into the repercussions of each tweet/retweet. 90% nerdy web dev/game shit and people know that's who I am anyways.

Google+, public but limited to certain circles and mostly public.

Tumblr, completely different name from anything else I use online.

searching my email gives 1 and a half google pages as to my fuckups but eventually they will fade
I dont have a facebook or something which helps
Im not too hard to find cause I host a website and that lowers your stealthyness cause of WHOIS records

if you are feeling paranoid online:
download TOR
disable javascript
make a fake email somewhere while using tor
then signup to twitter or whatever using that fake email while on tor and post
dont make any reference to any of your past addresses, emails, website, etc
bonus points for paranoia if you do all this on a truecrypt encypted OS while stealing your neighbors WEP wifi
