Getting. Impressions later.

It's like, got lots of outfits. And Lightning. Yay? I'd get a FF XIII trilogy set someday maybe.
-
I...I really like this. I can understand surprisingly quite a bit. Mostly basic stuff. I'm really impressed with myself.
And, I'm buying this day one. The battle system is refreshing and potentially great. Feels like a great new revamp of ATB. This game NEEDS FF12 like encounter system. The separate battle screens is really disappointing, but ahhhh what can you do?
What sold me on it was the boss fight. Before, it was fun, but in the boss fight, it all comes together: the job switching, the combos, overclock, perfect guard. Every element of the battle system introduced in the demo comes together to form a very cohesive whole. Every element compliments another. Like, for instance overclocking. You need 2 EP in order to activate it, and when you do, it slows down time. You can use this to your advantage. You can switch to Black Mage, use Blizzaga, activate an overlock, and then just start to spam magic on it to keep it juggled. But since you have two other jobs in your arsenal you can switch to those to keep the chain going. It's like every facet of the battle system is there to compliment each other which creates a sense of balance, at least, based off the demo. I wonder how the final game expands upon this.
Then there's perfect guard, where if you time a guard jusssst right, you can instant stagger them. It's pretty tough to pull off I'm finding. Certain attacks have specific windows that allow you to parry. The boss of the demo, a dragon that taken control of Sarah, has a fire breathing attack that can be perfect guarded, but the window of opportunity is SO SMALL.
From where I'm standing FF13: LR has a battle system that really takes a modicum of skill. Theoretically, you can't just button mash, because every single thing, from guarding, to other defend actions, cost x amount of points.
This is so good I'm going to play this demo again immediately. The demo has three extra dresses, so you have A LOT of ways to experiment.
I am very impressed by this demo to the point where I'm trying to master the basics of the game and am planning how to replay the next demo session. The combat is thorough and potentially deep. You guys on the fence have got to try this.

Good gameplay, you say?

mj, here is footage from what is apparently a "pro player" at DMC/Bayo, etc....

He is doing no-damage fights for some of the early bosses
-
HOW DID HE DODGE THAT AOE ATTACK?
omg :bow
I really like how each dress gives you totally different skill sets. Like, you cannot dodge with every dress. When you want to dodge, you need to switch to a dress that has that ability. :bow

Himumu can you explain the battle system for those of us that can't read Japanese? I get the "basics" but the knock out/stagger system is different from 13-1/13-2 to where it's throwing me for a loop.
How do you stagger enemies outside of perfect guards?
-
MJ, the past stagger system is completely gone in LR.
For every enemy, each attack has a potential stagger power as well as conditions. Experiment and see what they're weak too. Use R2 to gather information.
Generally, you want to use magic to help stagger which is fairly similar to the previous rav/com system. The demo gives us a black mage. Use it. If you're doing it correctly, you should have see a wavelength on the enemy you're fighting. Keep going until it's in the red.
For starters, the demo provides you with a dark knight as well as ハートスティーラー (heart stealer), I saw best results when I put those and the black mage in my party. Dark Knight can knock down easily, black mage can help build up stagger, and heart stealer is great at damage and maintaining stagger.
-
Heart stealer dress design is impeccable.

:o looks like a 3d amano design
-
I'm also fond of ダークミユーズ (dark muse) design.

I'm translating some of the styles for MJ because he can't read Japanese.

This games soundtrack is amazing. The battle system is shaping up to be amazing. I just... :bow
Toriyama :bow You had it in you!

God damnit another game for me to play. Sigh. It really does feel like a different generation of games since last year or the year before. So many great games so little time.
-
That sounds interesting, thanks. :) It's coming to NA I assume?
-
I'll buy this after it bombs and the price gets slashed to $20.

Yeah? Lol. It comes out in February. Pre-Order (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00946FSJ4/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00946FSJ4&linkCode=as2&tag=thbo09f-20) now to get your Cloud DLC

So, within a few days if Japan's first week sales are any indication.
-
That battle system looks boring. The monster is just sitting there while the dude busts out attacks and dodges on occasion. "Welcome to RPG," I guess?
Comparison of launch week sales for the FFXIII series:
2009: Final Fantasy XIII (PS3) - 1,501,964
2011: Final Fantasy XIII-2 (PS3) - 524,217
2013: Lightning Returns Final Fantasy XIII (PS3) - 277,082
Wow, FF has fallen pretty far with XIII.
I'm translating some of the styles for MJ because he can't read Japanese.
But that's katakana...used for foreign loan words. There's nothing to translate!

ヒムーちや-------ん!

That's because the guy is so good. The other bosses didn't even get to attack. In the demo, that dragon can fuck you up with a fire spell. Also, because the action is all over the place, staying offensive, while being able to dodge and block attacks is hard. It looks vapid in the video. But when you're actually playing it is very hard to pull off. The guy just makes it look easy. It is not that easy based on my time with the demo. Unless the demo features gimped stats of course.

Don't take this away from me lyte. I read that stuff and instantly got that in English. Do you realize how long it has taken me to get to this point? Katakana is weird.
-
There's a lot of katakana that are quite similar to each other...
-
Is it DLC or in the actual base game?

Heart Stealer is Locke's outfit, actually. It IS a 3D Amano design. You can also find Setzer's outfit later on, too.
