My most cherished gaming memories from 2005-11 were playing a ds or psp on rainy nights under my sheets, whipping one out at work and taking a cart or UMD from my chalice of games - I had a cup that I put games in to make things easy - and pop it in during lunch time. DS and PSP combined made the best gaming generation in terms of pure collective competition, interesting game types fueled by new technology (touch screen, mostly), and just a kick ass collection of games. I think it rivals SNES vs Genesis in terms of sheer quality both systems brought to the table and no system is better than the other as they both cover the others weaknesses. PSP and DS were like peas and carrots.

During this generation I became disenchanted with the AAA game. They bored me. They were homogeneous, aside from a few. And most of my gaming was done on the psp and ds. I'd go weeks, using my ps3 as nothing but a blu ray player or netflix player, while playing the next great game on the DS or PSP.

I think I can safely say, that if it were not for these two systems, and the digital download library both the hd twins offered, I would no longer be a gamer. The gaming catalogue offered by retail was poor and lacking in diversity.

I think, looking back at the whole gen, PS3 eventually won out for me...assuming we aren't talking about PC. Otherwise, this was the gen I got back into PC gaming and it's really no contest.

For the first few years, console exclusives (not available on PC) were significantly better on the 360. 360 also had more fun exclusives. Early on, it seemed like Sony was just focused on making cinematic games that showed off the power of the Cell.

PC gaming was at a low point when the PS3/360 were out because the gaming industry and gamers were so focused on the new systems. But around the time Capcom started making enhanced ports for the PC, it was no contest again as even the best games on consoles were available on PC but much better.

The consoles were sort of a draw for me. 360 and Wii kicked ass for the first few years, PS3 started kicking ass in like 2009, and Wii and 360 dried up by 2010.

Handhelds? DS had a better library but I hated the hardware, vice versa for PSP. Draw.

whoa now are you saying you prefer the dual shock 3 to the 360 controller?

now that the dualshock 4 is out, everyone's comfortable saying that the dualshock 3 kinda sucked. sony should've released the dualshock 4 sans trackpad and glow light back in 2009 with the PS3 slim.

the 360 controller was the best controller of last gen. but it isn't enough to make the console better. the DS3 was serviceable.

The only 360 exclusive games I cared about were Gears of War and Halo and a little bit Forza. The Sony stuff was always far more interesting. Uncharted, Infamous, Journey, Flower, etc.

Better service. PS Plus is a steal and consistently awesome.

No paying to have access to basic stuff like Netflix.

Better exclusives. MS' ran dry after like, a year and a half. Not just first party, but mostly third party. If you like Japanese games you do not own a 360, you own a ps3. Even then I prefer Uncharted over Gears and Motorstorm Pacific Rift over Forza. Unique games like Folklore, exclusives like Yakuza 3 which I am going through now, I havent played past the demos yet but - I plan to get them in the future - but I never played anything like Heavy Rain or Beyond on 360. Ps3 simply had more experimental and diverse software. After MS decided that Japan wasn't worth it, their lineup went down the drain. Forza, Gears, Halo, and more Forza, more Halo. I said in the original post that AAA gaming made me disenchanted. This was mostly caused by 360 retail games. 360 has nothing like Flower, Fat Princess, Flow, Pixel junk Shooter, Valkyria Chronicles, or Journey.

The only things 360 has over ps3 for me are a slightly better dd service library, and controller. The fact that you listed Resistance and Killzone shows a preference for shooters, and you're comparing it to 360's exclusives, which are mostly shooters. You've shown why ps3 eclipsed 360 with your own argument.

I hardly ever play shooters on consoles. Just pointed these out cuz Sony made so many of them and spent so much effort on promoting those franchises.

If I want to play an online game (this is rare) I just want to play online. I don't want to pay extra just to play online and have access to features I don't use.

The main reason to own a 360 I think is still xbla. Otherwise you may as well just get a gaming PC.

I dropped it a ton of times and had it on me while walking through pouring rain but you couldnt tell if you looked at it. Compare to my psp which fell apart in less than a year of use.

I say the PC because it really got me back into gaming and a lot of my favorite games of the gen were played on there.

360 got a bunch of burret herr shit though? :-[ Lots of my 360 stuff is JP games, it getting a Katamari is one of the things that pushed me towards one in the first place. Of course I'm a bit of an anomaly in the 360 ecosystem since as Oscar noted JP games really did not sell a whole fucking lot on the thing to the point where MS isn't even trying to crack that market anymore...

360 is pretty good, PS3 improved a lot from 2006-2008, and the Wii is as stupid and shitty as I had thought it would be before it released. Galaxy 1 and 2 are the only games that you could argue were must haves. The DS had a lot of good games but looked ugly as fuck. The good news is that we'll never really see games that ugly again.

At the start of this gen the 360 had everything I wanted. Actual console jrpgs, the 3rd party games worth a damned, and seemingly decent exclusives. I think Alan Wake was the last real exclusive I bought(Witcher 2 was the last console exclusive I bought). The system just felt like something amazing. Chromehounds on XBL was amazing and nothing else out there was like it. Lost Odyssey was and it's ilk really hurt the argument that the system wasn't diverse. And Gears just looked damn good.

Honestly PS3 just looked kind of pathetic. I of course got one for MGS4, but after that the PS3 was mostly quiet.

And then the 360 kind of stooped. Uncharted 2 came out for PS3 and well after that it's been PS3's show. 360 seems to have mostly died off and become boring. MS is complacent with it being a CoD machine and throwing gamer's a bone with it's rotating series of Gears, Halo, Forza, and Fable. All of which are past thier prime or where never that exciting to me.

PS3 on the other hand keeps giving with stuff like The Last of US, jrpgs are at least alive if just playing it safe on the machine, there's a few niche Japanese games outside of jrpgs also still coming out, and third parties seemingly get the system now.

So basically the 1st half of this gen was 360 and the 2nd half PS3. It's a clean cut.

The Wii, well it has some good games like obviously GOTG Xenoblade, but it was never consistent for me.

The PSP was pretty boring until the end here where for me it just seemed like all of a sudden it had all these great games. The PSP really is underrated and it's a shame what happen to it. Had a good amount of it's titles not stayed Japan only we would have had a real godly system.

PC, well I'm a console person and only recently have I been getting into pc gaming. Eh, I don't know.

WTF happened to the action-adventure genre?

It was probably my favorite genre of the PS2 era. There were so many high quality games, including many lesser known ones like Rygar and Otogi.

It's not like NG and DMC stopped selling but all of a sudden the devs wanted to tweak things that weren't broken and made everything QTE heavy. Fucking garbage.

Action adventure isn't B. Stuff like Uncharted and Tomb Raider and GTA are action adventure. However stuff like DMC clones (Rygar, OTOGI) have always been B. I wouldn't call DMC or NG action adventure though they certainly are. When I think of A/A I think of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Beyond Good and Evil, Okami, Zelda.

A/A will never be B as a collective genre. It is the most popular genre in terms of revenue and has been since the psx days (Resident Evil, MGS;etc). It is just that A/A is always changing.

Any exploration is secondary and the only DMC that is exploration heavy is 1. However traditional A/A titles balance exploration and action. Sometimes DMC and NG have exploration but it is never a focus. Compared to say, BG&E or Okami. Then again, Uncharted doesn't have a full focus on exploration either. So maybe it is all about perception. I mostly classify Uncharted as a tps and DMC/NG as stylish action.

But now we are in a convoluted genre definition game and that means my time is up.

But I guess we could say A/A is the largest and encompassing genre. Anything that has action and exploration in it is an A/A. That's why it is so large and why it isn't a B genre. But within the confines a sub genre DMC created, stylish action, it is most definitely B, maybe even C, now.

Platinum's eventually going to run out of publishers to fund their bombs, Ninja Gaiden's been shit since the core of TN left, Sega isn't going to greenlight anything but sequels to popular franchises, and Valhalla's never going to release anything. Maybe there will be a big turnaround in the next few years, but I doubt it.

that's how I'd rank 1-3. Onimusha 4 didn't seem that bad from the little I played, but I didn't play enough of it or that fighting game with mega man.
