Title: The Incredible Adventures of Loot Helsing II
Post by: Great Rumbler on December 28, 2013, 10:32:44 AM
So, yeah, I'm blasting werewolves in the face with a grenade launcher and then torching their corpses with a flame thrower to get at the phat loots hidden underneat their fur. That's basically what this game is about. And I've got a ghost companion that's kicking some serious monster butt, too. How come nobody told me about this game?

Anyway, this is a fairly Titan Quest/Grim Dawn kinda game, as in less random and somewhat more quest-driven than Path of Exile or Diablo 3, but it's way more of a well-made game than I thought, especially considering how it came and went with virtually no fan-fare. Apparently, it was a bit buggy on initial release, but there have been a patch or two since then, so I haven't seen anything so far that stood out to me as needing to be worked on.

If you're gonna get it, and it was about $6.79 earlier in the sale [edit: actually, it's still this price for 2 more hours], maybe wait a few days and see if it pops up again, and make sure to get the DLC since it adds new classes and stuff that you'll definitely want [like the class I'm using right now with flamethrowers and grenade launchers].

Summary: This game is really good, buy it.

FWIW, Kripp enjoyed it. I haven't seen him play a lot of it, but enough to put it on my list.

MAF seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. That was the tipping point for me.

The combat is very nice. You get a lot of different skills and abilities, including active and passive, and the same goes for your ghostly companion. It's smooth and has some weight to it, enemies sometimes get gibbed when you blast them with a grenade. You can even switch between close-combat and ranged with the press of a button, and it automatically switches your skills loadout accordingly. Lots of diversity and customization possibilities to play around with. And it all works very well with an Xbox360 controller.

And you can make the game really, really hard if you want to.

Just finished a play session of this and wow good shit Great Rumbler. I had actually heard about this game but I didn't even bother looking too much into it. That was a mistake! This game is incredibly fun and they completely nailed the controls/movement. The game just feels incredibly smooth. The setting is amazing as well. I am in the middle of playing Kingdom hearts BBS but as soon as I finish that game I am going to jump on this one and play the hell out of it.

Thanks

This game is pretty fun, although I think it might be more fun if I hadn't picked the pew pew pew ranged class. Still, an all around solid arpg with cool skills and good combat. Better than PoE and Torchlight II, not as good as Grim Dawn or D3. Well worth the $6 or whatever I paid.

THANK YOU DOG

I actually like the ranged class, though, especially once you get the flamethrower and the powered-up grenades. It's fun to setting off huge, AOE explosions that shred through packs of monsters.

I have the flamethrower, and a shit ton of fire dmg boosting gear. I'm super squishy tho, so I have to maneuver around a lot, use my mechanical spider, and Katarina's ghost doubles, etc to tank for me as I roast shit. Works pretty good with regular packs but more dangerous shit and uggggh.

Oh, one other thing- game would be better if you didn't have to use 360 controller. (I'm only assuming you have to, since it's the default. While it's ok, and the console version of D3 was pretty good, arpgs beg to be played with m&kb.)

Unplug your controller, bra. You can use kb+m like any other ARPG, but if you have the controller plugged in it just assumes you want it.

A+ recommendation, GR. I see myself getting 5 dollars of fun out of this. Already seems better than Torchlight.

I've been playing this the last couple of days. Their heart is in the right place, but it devolves into a kite-fest too often due to the sheer amount of enemies they throw at you.
The first time around I made the mistake of playing on hard. Got to the base invasion, somehow passed that (even though all the traps were broken) and then deleted that character. Started over on normal and having a much better time, though the hordes are still an issue. I don't feel like the Hunter has the adequate tools, no matter what skill, but I didn't like the other two classes so here we are. Focusing on melee now. Trying to solve mana issues currently.

Yeah, hard is just way too hard. I really enjoyed my playthrough on the normal difficulty, though.

Aaand finished. Got lucky with some drops and ended up with enough mana regen so that the potions started piling up again. Didn't even have to futz with essences to get there.

Pretty fun game all in all, but it hobbles itself with the sheer amount of enemies it throws at you. The last boss is just comical in that regard. I get it, you can display a lot of enemies. Now show some restraint.

Also, fuck mana drain champions. They crippled my character completely. That on extra fast Wisps, or any ranged enemy for that matter - death.
Ranged enemies in general were a problem, as usual in ARPGs. Put a random cooldown on their attacks, so they don't all synchronize and hit you at once as you hack your way to them. Why is this still a thing? >:(

Yup. Is it basically an expansion pack? Seems like it (with level cap getting raised, etc)

I'm on my second playthrough of this right now. Will definitely buy this expansion/sequel!

It's pretty much an expansion, with the increased level cap and it being a direct continuation of the story. Definitely worth $15, though.
