Title: 2014 New Year's Resolutions
Post by: Olivia Wilde Homo on December 29, 2013, 07:18:48 PM
The 2013 thread: http://www.thebore.com/forum/index.php?topic=39368.0

Post them now!

1) Continue getting my MBA.  Try to aim for a May 2015 graduation date.  This is attainable if I take three classes per semester (Spring, Summer, and Fall)

2) Meet with a good financial advisor with my money.  I have a bunch of money just sitting in my checking account, accruing no interest whatsoever; I'm fact I'm technically losing money through inflation.  I think it's time to take it to the next level.  The question is how to find a good financial advisor.

3) Work on my time management skills.  I work a lot of hours a week (60+ usually) and I want to see if I can cut this down by several hours while maintaining or increasing productivity.  Throughout the past couple of weeks, I've been reading up on articles about time management.  Most of the articles suck ass but it seems like if it is something I pay close attention to and write down daily lists of priorities for me to do, this is a good start.  My resolution can be tracked to see if I can create and follow through on my lists of things to do and determine if they have an appreciable effect on time spent working.

4) Download more porn than ever before

5) Read over 25 books a year.  50 seems like too much with what I have going on but one book every other week doesn't seem that bad.

6) Continuing my goal of spending less time on the internet.  This will tie in well with #3 in terms of setting aside time to do the things I want to do.

7) Get out more.  Due to my work, my dog, and my classes, my off time is spent at home.  This is the main reason why I barely get laid or have anything going on other than work and school.  This ties in with points #3 and #6.  I need to start making a bigger effort to be a more well rounded person.

8) Try to get a better sense of fashion.  I still dress like I did when I was 16 which is basically T-Shirts from athletic events and a pair of gym shorts.  It's time to step things up.  I don't want to look like an androgynous hipster so this will take some time.  Also look into getting laser eye surgery.  Not sure if I will do that this year but I will get the ball rolling.

There's a bunch of shit that's just going to "happen" as long as I keep showing up and doing what I need to, like graduating, moving, playing a fuck ton of D3:RoS etc. So, I'll list shit that I genuinely need and plan to do.

1) Get a better paying, "regular" job. M-F, 9-5, weekends off, stale ass boring job. #grownupshit
2) Work on dealing with anger management issues. If I'm going to make it in a real workplace again, I'm going to have to learn to get along better, even when I want to put people on blast for being a fucktard.
3) Continue to not give my worthless fucking family money.
4) Once my living/work situation has settled down, get another dog. Life without one sucks.
5) Once living/work situation settles down, seriously start dating again.
6) Continue to work on eating better, being more active, and losing weight.

I usually never make resolutions because if I cared enough about anything in particular, I would have either taken care of it already or there's a damn good reason I haven't yet.

I think I'll go the lazy route this year so I don't hate myself next New Years Eve for not following through:

- don't gain more than 5 lbs
- don't start any bad habits that I already have no interest in, i.e. cigarettes
- don't go any further into debt
- bonus: hang out with STLbore and other friends & family I actually like

Now if lose weight, pay off debt, etc I'll look like a badass next NYE! And if I don't, hey I still met my resolutions!

Start grad school or a real research job. And fall in love. In the same year. Oh and get at least a four-pack because I'm vain.

No more smoking in 2014.

I technically quit smoking last August but it's been just under a week that I've stopped using an e-cig.  My goal is to not become a daily user of nicotine again.

Hopefully when someone bumps this in 12 months I can look back on my meager resolutions with pride having actually completed them despite how silly or dumb they are

1. Read the books I bought in 2013. It’s not even that much, like ~10 between physical and kindle but the last thing I want is another backlog. There needs to be one area of my life where I only buy what I use and not more.
2. Browse the internet only one tab at a time. I feel like multi-tab browsing is wrecking my attention span and overall making the time I spend online less interesting / fulfilling. Opening tabs only to never look at them, only reading parts of pages, bouncing between crap, refreshing out of date tabs... Most of the time I spend online is a waste anyway, might as well improve how I deal with that waste. Slow and steady wins the race!
3. Write something after finishing a game. I consume so much crap but I never do anything with it. If I'm going to play something I should at least attempt to "create" something even if it’s just a forum post with my thoughts on a game. Anything more that "hey this game is pretty cool!" I don’t remember the last time I bothered to spend more than three minutes writing something (that wasn’t for work)
4. Lose weight. I'm 5'8 and 180 (its not muscle :(). I think according to my BMI I'm one step from obese.
5. Complete one jigsaw puzzle a month. Like the one comment above, I want to spend more time in 2014 making stuff, even if it’s something as simple as a puzzle. I have no art skills, no writing skills, nothing really but an ability to use excel. Legos are too expensive and take up too much room. A puzzle should be perfectly doable.
6. Build a PC. I hope to go with something similar to this Tested.com build (http://www.tested.com/tech/pcs/454052-small-quiet-fast-building-modern-gaming-pc/) (the cheapest version). I like the small case and if it’s good enough for Loyd its good enough for me. We'll see if I have the extra money though. Student Loans go into repayment this year for me :-\
7. Get my wisdom teeth removed. New dental insurance started this month! My teeth were hurting a bunch last month but the pain eventually faded away after about 3-4 weeks. I’ve been told for years I should get them out but they never bothered other than the occasional evening where they hurt. Last month though… :'(  Finally time to get rid of them. No more putting it off

Stop being a special fellow online.
Stop taking this whole online thing seriously in general.
Stop being such a loner.
Get out more and try new things from food, to beer, to social events.
Work on my comic book and short fiction.
Take school more seriously, meaning less time wasted on other things.
Be more open and friendly in public.
Just try to be a better more well rounded person and not some nerd dweeb.

Let's see how I did:

1) Going to have to be a July 2015 graduation date but otherwise so far so good.
2) I didn't do this but I read a couple books on the matter and began investing a few months ago.
3) Succeeded here for the most part.  I cut down the amount of hours I work and managed to get as much if not more done than I used to.
4) Done and done!
5) Did this, thanks to the Kindle Paperwhite.
6) Succeeded here.  Probably the greatest success of the year.
7) Succeeded here
8) Not so much here.  Never got around to it.  Looks like this is the only failure I have on the list

Huh, let's look at these....

1. Got a better paying job at the same place I was working. Which has its good and bad points. After some wrangling, I'm now only M-F, although not 9-5. I'm not really using my degree in this job, though.
2. Since I'm not in a real workplace, this didn't really apply, but I feel like I'm marginally more well-adjusted.
3. Mostly ok on this front since June. Have helped my mom out a couple times, but only in emergencies when her car has broken down.
4. Got another dog in May. She's awesome, even if she's spastic.
5. Did this. Have given up on this. I did sleep with more women this year than ever before in one calendar year, so yay I guess? Not really feeling the dating game right now. Meh.
6. Nope, failed this shit again. Sigh. I was taking the puppy on at two nice walks a day for a while there when the weather was nicer, but I've had a couple bouts with illness combined with shitty weather means I stay inside a lot and I'm just a lazy dude. Still definitely something I want to improve on.

All in all not a bad year. Moving away from my family was the best decision I've made in like a decade.
