BARRY, Ill. — The byline of Dick Metcalf, one of the country’s pre-eminent gun journalists, has gone missing. It has been removed from Guns & Ammo magazine, where his widely-read column once ran on the back page. He no longer stars on a popular television show about firearms. Gun companies have stopped flying him around the world and sending him the latest weapons to review.
In late October, Mr. Metcalf wrote a column that the magazine titled “Let’s Talk Limits,” which debated gun laws. “The fact is,” wrote Mr. Metcalf, who has taught history at Cornell and Yale, “all constitutional rights are regulated, always have been, and need to be.”
The backlash was swift, and fierce. Readers threatened to cancel their subscriptions. Death threats poured in by email. His television program was pulled from the air.
Just days after the column appeared, Mr. Metcalf said, his editor called to tell him that two major gun manufacturers had said “in no uncertain terms” that they could no longer do business with InterMedia Outdoors, the company that publishes Guns & Ammo and co-produces his TV show, if he continued to work there. He was let go immediately.
Well then! Sounds like a bunch of totes rational dudes that just want to sit down and reasonably discuss differences.
Drew, have you guys figured out who is going to kill him yet?
Also, to the reasonable gun owners on the board- if you're members of the NRA, please stop claiming to be reasonable gun owners, because you're supporting shit like this with your membership dues.

Why can't people own guns but admit that some people shouldn't own guns? Are they afraid they fall into the latter category?
-
Of course he was promptly fired, he blasphemed God.

I still don't understand why ordinary people join the NRA. They don't support you. They support gun manufacturers. Why are you giving them free money?

Circular firing squad. Any survivors will be killed by drones.

Discount on guns and ammo for me. At my gun shops I get a 3% discount on ammo, accessories and guns. Even if I were to only buy one gun a year (lol) it more than pays for itself with that.
But yeah, the NRA is a pretty damn stupid organization.
Edit: Forgot to mention that when the NRA gun show comes to town it's fucking bliss. So much cool shit.

One day drew will be able to afford a gun, then you guys won't be laughing. :aah

Is the discount just because the owner does it or is it an advertised perk by the NRA?
I don't mind guns or gun owners. I can't stand the NRA.

I don't think it's advertised by the NRA, at least I haven't seen it. But I know a bunch of local and online shops that participate in the discount. I got mine because when I bought a gun a while back the salesman told me I'd save money if I signed up with the NRA and since then I've noticed it at other shops too.

The thing is, I'd like to have seen that column run in the NYT or WSJ, and then see what happens. As it was, Metcalfe wrote in a magazine devoted to the most avid gun aficionados, so it isn't surprising that there was a negative reaction. If an article espousing the limited appeal of felines was written for Cat Fancy, there would likely be a similar reaction. If only people realized the cat menace which surrounds us all, instead of hiding behind the feline-related portions of the Bill of Rights.

But what about his first amendment rights, like that Duck Dynasty guy? Where's the outrage?
