If I buy a ticket to see the latest American Military wankfest "Lone Survivor", I paid to see the commercials too, pal. :gun
-
Waste of life. Texting during previews is standard. Most previews suck. Go and change seats. Fuck.
-
Bet the people he put into jail cant wait for him to drop by
-
Thank God this upstanding American had a gun, otherwise that criminal might have spoiled someone's moving-going experience! :american

I can't believe it took you fucking libruls so long to post this story

That's because I only just found out this happened during the trailers. I wasn't going to post it if he shot the guy for texting during the movie; that's fair game.

American movie theaters are quickly becoming some of the most dangerous places on earth.

Change seats, Business. This is a No Wet Blankets section.

The preview isn't the movie, dork.
-
Fuck no. I'm going to check facebook for a sec.

Nope.
The commercial telling you to shut off your cell phone so you don't annoy other people doesn't show up until AFTER the previews end. :patel

Rumbler gets it.

Definitely want to apologize to the white members of The Bore for Himuro's views on this sensitive subject. We are not perfect, and are working towards a level of professionalism and quietness while in theater attendance.
Himuro does not speak for myself, Beezy, Wrath, or Stony.
-
Sometimes, a movie trailer is boring or they've been hyping it for a year and you're tired of it, so you go check your twitter feed. :yeshrug Sometimes you forgot to check into foursquare :yeshrug

This entire discussion feels like it belongs in a Seinfeld episode.

They're commercials. As long as everything gets set to silent before the actual movie, who gives a shit?
-
:sabu
nicca you reaching
No one said they do this ALL THE TIME, but just that it's not such a large offense as others are making it.
-
Maybe some people want to read threads uninterrupted by shitty analogies. Shouldn't we show consideration for their feelings?
-
I'm with Himu on this, it's the fucking previews! shitty ads and shitty trailers you can watch on youtube while taking a shit.

Lawdy, when did I say I text/FB/tweet during previews? Just because I'm not driven into apoplectic rage by a tiny light in my peripheral vision doesn't mean I personally hit the social media when I'm out of the home.
It just means, judging from this thread, that I'm not suited to be a cop. :smug

Business:
I'm at an MLS game and they do the national anthem.
I'm on my phone while standing up, reading my facebook feed.
What do you do?
What DOooo you do?
-
Trick question. People don't go to MLS games.

I live relatively close to the theater this took place at.
That's all I really have to add.
-
No it isn't. You need to weigh in after PD name dropped your ass.
-
IME, people are plenty likely to have their enjoyment of the national anthem ruined by seeing someone not "respect" the moment in the traditional way.
Just because you feel people shouldn't care about that during a national anthem doesn't mean they won't, Biz. Etiquette is about consideration! :wag

Phones should go off as soon as the theater lights dim.

Is that what you want, young Wrath?

I took my friend to see The Dark Knight when it first came out, and she was on her phone the ENTIRE movie. She's African American, if you couldn't guess.

While we black people certainly have our issues on this stuff. (I've gone into this before), the phone thing is almost strictly a younger person issue in general and age trending up. White, Black, Latino, whatever. They are all on their phones constantly during a movie or any other gathering/event/public place.
Stereotypical grumpy old man rant.
-
They're commercials. As long as everything gets set to silent before the actual movie, who gives a shit?
Well, yeah, but they're promoting something I've already proven to the theater that I want. If I'm at Starbucks, and the staff bring by a sample of a cookie or a frappuccino or today's coffee, it's not OK for someone else to come knock it off my table, or take it away from me. It's mine to enjoy.
Perhaps more telling is that there is an Apple app which just shows movie trailers, but there isn't an app which just shows commercials.

I switch my phone off as soon as I sit down and get comfortable, even the polite on screen warning to please turn off your phone does nothing. A large amount of people simply can't detach from their digital lives for a couple of hours.
I've seen people of all ages/ethnicity's be a fuckwad in regards to this, and it's hard to confront people as it just ruins everyone's time at the cinema as the tension starts up. Patrons shouldn't be having to do that.
In this case getting a gun out and firing it seems a bit excessive.
-
I stopped going to the movies because people couldn't stop looking at their phones during the movie. That and the previews are like half an hour these days. Since tickets are about the cost of a bluray, it's just not a good value to me anymore.
-
I had it down to a regular treat for a while as it was damm pricy. Especially if I wanted to go see something in DBOX talking over £30 for two people but me and the wife now have unlimited cinema cards which means we go to the cinema as many times as we want for 15.99 a month.
I love my home setup but sometimes you want that atmosphere that only cinema can give you.
-
I stopped going to the movies because people couldn't stop looking at their phones during the movie.
I go to movies about 8-10 times a year and never encounter this. Maybe it's because most of the movies I see are aimed at kids or old fogeys.
The only annoyances I see are that some people think it's a great idea to bring a 6 month old into a movie. But, I get that because some people want to GTFO of their house without having to pay a sitter 40 bucks.
-
- Motherfuckers doing a play-by-play during the movie. We're all sitting right here watching it, Cosell.
- Children. No, scratch that. Parents. Put a leash and a muzzle on your ugly fucking yard critter.
- Sick people. I don't give a shit if you took Theraflu, stay the fuck home and keep your disease to yourself.
- Wash your nasty ass before you leave the house. When I went to go see one of those LotR movies, I sat next to a chick who smelled like she bathed in onion juice.
- If you're thirty minutes late, stay home.
-
I don't go to as many movies as I used to, but I rarely encounter the cell phone thing. Why? I sit way close to the screen. Not front row, but close. Also, I try to make it a point to NEVER go to a movie on release weekend.
-
wait, how is texting distracting if the lights haven't dimmed? is there some audio component to texting i'm not aware of?
also, i text/internet during movies regardless, so fuck your norms! fucking kidless shitsicles who don't hafta survive 90 minutes of alvin and the fucking chipmunks
try to show some consideration for those of us WHO DON'T WANNA BE IN A THEATER. seriously, if *I* cap you in a theater, it's because you WILLINGLY AS AN ADULT went to a disney or will farrell movie and frankly, mercy is a virtue
-
The lights don't dim until the movie starts nowadays so half of the complaints leave me like what.
-
Phones should go off as soon as the theater lights dim.
Who the fuck turn off their phones in this day and age?
-
I'm with Himu on this, it's the fucking previews! shitty ads and shitty trailers you can watch on youtube while taking a shit.
You know you're on the wrong side of etiquette when you're siding with beaners.
Take that cell phone business outside.
-
They drop the lights a little bit when the previews start, but don't turn them all the way off until the movie starts.
-
At AMC I think they dim the lights slightly when previews are on, then they roll the reel about turning off your phone after the preview, then they dim the lights fully.
This. The commercial reel before the previews starts at my local theater, the lights are fully on. When the previews start, they dim them partially, then all the way when the feature starts.

Was this during that bullshit first peak shit with the lights on or real deal dimmed previews? This matters
-
Who goes to movies at all anymore?
-
It's also interesting how both himu and esch both said "these days" or "nowadays" as if it changed.
It probably depends on the theatre, but all the ones I go to don't drop the lights until the movie starts, and I totally talk, text and fuck around during that period. Previews are awful and I try to make sure I miss them for mine and the audience's consideration.
-
At my theater, there's bullshit TV commercials / behind the scenes crap that starts way before the movie to give early comers something to stare at, then the lights go off and the curtains widen for that full HD goodness and the preview reel starts, that means its time to shut the fuck up and get shot if you have your phone out
-
It's also interesting how both himu and esch both said "these days" or "nowadays" as if it changed.
It has. I remember back in the day, they used to fully turn off all lights during previews.
-
Well, that's certainly self centered, as for many others previews are an important part of the experience
-
I love previews. Sometimes. Not always. Those times I don't I take out my phone and make sure no one is bothered. Big whoop. I tend to sit in the upper middle so no one is every around anyways.
-

It's hard to tell for certain from the timeline. The report said that it was 1:20 showing of Lone Survivor and that the shooting happened at 1:25, so that would make it during the real-deal trailers. However, the shooter yelled at the texter for a bit, then got up to tell a theater employee, came back, go into it with the texter some more, and then shot him. Five minutes seems like a short window for all of that to have happened, although it's theoretically possible, depending on how long he spent with the employee.
-
I need to know how dim the lights were to prevent me getting shot in the future. Why do I expect thorough reporting from the news media? Fuck.
-
People as a whole have never shown previews much deference. A great deal of people miss them intentionally, or are waiting for friends to show up, or simply don't care.
Ironically, the shooter was waiting for his son to show up at the time of the shooting.
-
Guys, keep in mind Biz lives in a state that is like 20 years behind the curve, so they probably DO fully dim the lights in his local theater. :heh
-
Was this during that bullshit first peak shit with the lights on or real deal dimmed previews? This matters
That was my thought as well. "If this was during The 20 then it was a terrible tragedy. If this was during the actual previews then guy got what he deserved."
-

That'll teach that stupid bastard to be on time :patel
He'll be going to the theater alone from now on, so I guess it doesn't really matter. :smug
Nah, I'm just kidding, it's Florida. He'll probably get 6 months.
-
Going to the movies sucks anyways. TV all the way :bow2
-
Yup
-
Yeah, well, I think I'm just going to stick with my "wait for it, watch it at home" plan, whenever considering movie viewing in the USA. Florida is not California, where I'm most likely to be watching a movie, but while I'm unlikely to be shot, I'd really prefer not to pay the price of a DVD/Blu-Ray to have my experience ruined by other people who can't manage to be considerate.
