Title: MCD, come grieve with me

Murayama you broke my heart. You left your fans. :(

I don't know what trouble happened at Konami, so I have to have empathy for his situation, but it's still like...if some writer/creator of a show/book series or whatever, just ups and leaves halfway through the story and just retires and it gets cancelled soon after.

I thought it was all Konami's fault and blamed them for years (it could still be)...but that post broke my heart.

Murayama :(

No. He left during III's development.

That's old news.

What's new is that Konami WANTED him to come back and finish it up and he didn't.

He abandoned us. :tocry

I imagine him pulling a Shatner during that SNL skit telling Trekkies to get a life.   :aah

Actually, he did one game in 2005. It sucked iirc. Either way, fuck him.

Konami sucks but they should have at least had someone ghostwrite the rest of the series instead of doing prequels.

He did that 10,000 Bullets game.

I guess this puts that  "Rubicon" quote in perspective.

IMO V proved they don't even NEED Murayama. The head writer for V did a GREAT job and if they couldn't hire Murayama they could at least consult him just to get an idea for an ending. According to the notes I've heard Murayama wrote, they were so extensive Konami didn't really need his output.

The core game of Tierkreis was solid Suikoden material but I stopped playing mid way through because god I don't care about these kids.

On a non related note, this is what IE11 suggest for Suikoden:

The core of Tierkries was not "solid Suikoden".

The only Suikoden with any worthwhile combat is III. I never played Suiko for combat. I played it for story, sidequests, exploration, characterization, and gameplay variety.

As for that image, never fall in love with a game franchise that starts with the letter S. They're cursed. All of them

Shin Megami Tensei.

Maybe just avoid falling in love with series that have huge, overly ambitious plans without any guarantee of being able to finish their story arc within a few games?

One of these things isn't like the other Oscar.

Okay, they're self-contained and not really a story. But go with my objection here. :(

Shinobi had a good run.  Street Fighter also looking dapper.  Super Mario, aw yeah.  Shin Megami Tensei.

But Sonic has created an entire legion of peole whose lives are ruined due to their fanhood. The S curse lives on.

Yeah SMT has a lot of lore. The games make nods and are even connected sometimes.

Oscar - I was joking and was hoping my sonic example would let you know that and you'd play along. :(

Konami sucks but they should have at least had someone ghostwrite the rest of the series instead of doing prequels.

They were clearly holding out hope they could get Murayama back, and futzing with his timeline was probably seen as an impediment to that.  As it is, if he had a change of heart and Konami still wanted him, he could pick up his continuity more or less where he left it.  Instead of making Hobgoblin Ned Leeds, so to speak.

And in the end they killed the series by doing so vs maybe the series staying relevant with a new writer.  Just seems like a silly choice especially by the time Suikoden V rolled around they should've known Murayama wasn't coming back.

V was a prequel to I
Title: Re: MCD, come grieve with me

From Wikipedia:

"Suikoden IV (143 years before Suikoden V and 150 years before Suikoden) → Suikoden V (6 years before Suikoden) → Suikoden (3 years before Suikoden II) → Suikoden II (15 years before Suikoden III) → Suikoden III"

IV is very slow and being limited to a three-member party sucks. It's probably a lot more fun to play slightly sped up with the help of an emulator. 1, 2, 3, and 5 are great RPGs that everyone should play.

IV was a prequel 150 years before 1. V is a prequel to 1 but by only a few years at best. V is more of a prequel to II more than anything. It is full of continuations of themes and stories from II, notably Georg Prime.

IV is a mediocre rpg, and I know only three people who like it: RK, Shouta, and ZephyrFate.

IV is very slow and being limited to a three-member party sucks. It's probably a lot more fun to play slightly sped up with the help of an emulator. 1, 2, 3, and 5 are great RPGs that everyone should play.

IV's problems are:

1. setting the location 150 years before 1 makes the entire thing inconsequential because none of the characters aside from mainstays like Viki and Jeane are relevant. Ted is in it, but he's underdeveloped. One of the things that makes Suikoden speical is how it ties locations and characters into a coherent world. The only reason to set it 150 years before I is to expand the world - it didn't, at least in a good way.

2. Battle has never been a terrible priority in Suikoden, but IV takes the cake. 3 character battles ruins any sense of strategic sense there was. It's an obvious response to III's buddy system criticism - which was novel and interesting in its execution. They were complete cowards in this regard. The result is a very boring combat system compared to even I and II.

3. Random battles in towns.

4. Extremely slow sense of travel via world map due to slow boat.

5. A barren location. There's only 3/4 towns, and only one major city. The idea of having it set in the Island Nations is that you should have a number of islands that stand on their own that are federation or united nations that are islands. This isn't the case. So most of your traveling by boat is empty water. Wind Waker's world is more populous. That says a lot.

5. Underdeveloped characterization, shoddy writing, and editing, poor villain motivation, poor explanation of the true rune. Just bad writing period.

6. Load times.

Good things about Suikoden IV:

1. Music.

2. Mini games.

Don't forget:

3- Playable Jeane for the first time

4- Mitsuba

Playable Jeane isn't a big deal and Mitsuba is okay. Snowe is the only stand out character in IV.

Man Suikoden has some non-embarrassing art for a JRPG.  I forgot that even existed.

Suikoden was prolly the most egalitarian jrpg IMO. The embarrassing parts of Suikoden are furry animals. Kobolds were cool. But then they introduced ducks and well...

Reminds me how much I enjoyed Suikoden III because the combat shat all over the continually overrated Suikoden II, tho :heh

Suikoden III has great combat. If you play rpgs for combat, Sjikoden is definitely not for you. Luckily, I consider exploration and side questing equally as important to an RPG as combat. So I can enjoy Suikoden. III is on par with II though. Trinity Sight needs to make a comeback.
