Series:

Steins;Gate
Serial Experiments Lain
Initial-D
Ranma 1/2 (now THIS ages me)
Galaxy Express 999 (and this ages me even more)

Movies:

Princess Mononoke
Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind
Tenchi in Tokyo
Paprika
Spirited Away (yes I love Ghibli)

I haven't watched nearly as much anime as you'd expect I would. Up next are Chaos;head, Haibane Renmei, and I really think I need to watch Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Berserk and Eva some day.

2. Rurouni Kenshin Tsuiokuhen
3. Princess Mononoke
4. Castle In The Sky
5. Spirited Away

these are the only ANIMES I'VE EVER SEEN. outside of sailor moon

S.Cry.Ed - Really just the first 12 episode. The second half isn't nearly as good, but that first half :bow2 KAZUMMAAAAA
Howl's Moving Castle - My favorite Miyazaki movie. I never read the book
Buso Renkin - Typical shonen jump stuff but the Kazuki & Tokiko relationship is one of my favorites
Cowboy Bebop movie - Everything I liked about the TV show condensed into a sweet movie
A Certain Scientific Railgun  - Misaka is my waifu :heart

Honorable mentions to Turn A Gundam, Ghost Hunt, and G GUNDAM take this, my love, my anger and all of my sorrow! :hyper

ranking is hard.  some of these are because of the manga more than the anime.  series only.

Hunter X Hunter (both series)
Genshiken
FLCL
Gundam 0080 / G Gundam / Zeta Gundam / Turn A Gundam (counting as one)
Kino's Travel / Planetes / Monster (counting as one)

for some reason this thread makes me want to rewatch hikaru no go

This has to be a top ten.

1.Gurren Lagann
2.Evanegelion
3.Cowboy Bebop
4.Escaflowne
5.Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig
6.Giant Robo OVA.
7.Macross Plus
8. Nadesico/Rahxephon
9.Revelutionary Girl Utena
10. MegaZone 23 Parts 1 & 2

I would have left it at series and said "oh if I'm putting down the seires I probaly mean everything involved". But then I remember how much I dislike the
Rahxephon, Nadesico, Escalfowne movies, and GitS Innocence. Plus the Rebuild Eva movies can go to hell.

Movies:
1.Princess Mononoke
2. Akira
3. Ghost in the Shell
4. End of Evangelion
5. Adolescence of Utena
6. Cowboy Bebop Movie
7. Sword of The Stranger
8. Nausica
9. Spade Adventure Cobra
10. Gunbuster whatever.

1. Ouran High School Host Club
2. Durarara!!
3. Death Note
4. Gurren-Lagann
5. Hunter x Hunter (2011)

My other favorites are DBZ Kai, both Fullmetal Alchemists, .hack//SIGN, Casshern Sins, Rurouni Kenshin, Shin-Chan, Big O, Sailor Moon, YuYu Hakasho, Magi, FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, and both Stand Alone Complexes (though I prefer 2nd Gig.)

Golden Boy is one of the greatest fan service animes of all time. It puts virtually every fan service show made since to absolutely shame. And it's totally hilarious from start to finish. Comedy gold mine that just keeps giving.

Sad how a lot of people forget stuff like Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku.

I haven't watched any of the Urusei Yatsura series, but the second movie is really great. A pretty big shift in tone, though.

Shin Chan defies that rule. Probably the only worthwhile exception, though.
Title: Re: Your top 5 anime thread
Post by: Tasty on January 22, 2014, 11:38:15 PM
The overall story was way more interesting, easily. Nationalism and immigration are interesting enough when viewed through a future lens; but I felt it lacked the strong transhumanism/reality bending feel of what I associate with GitS.

The "tee hee I'm the laughing man!" stuff in the first SAC was a bit more interesting for ep to ep stuff I agree, two eps in particular are probably my favorite over anything in 2nd Gig (Togusa in the kids hospital, and Major in the Laughing Man chat room) but I thought both plotlines were generally of similar quality, and I liked Kuze a lot.

I really just need to say that 2nd GiG has the sniper episode and that is really enough to win this argument.

But I have to disagree. Sure 1st has the laughing man stuff and Jungle Cruise, but 2nd gig's plot was far more relevant to me. Displaced immigrants without a place to go being abused by the government who dosen't want them. It's just really relevant and was easier to get into. Plus, Goda is one magnificent bastard. Kruse is also just charismatic as all hell. Really, 2nd Gig feels more like human drama and well I like that more.

I haven't watched a lot of anime since I started full time work and women and stuff. The last thing I remember watching as it was being broadcast was Welcome To The NHK and I stopped after about 3 episodes.

1. Azumanga Daioh
2. Martian Successor Nadescio
3. Genshiken
4. Serial Experiments Lain
5. Cowboy Bebop

I seem to remember enjoying Haibane Renmei, Gunsmith Cats and Excel Saga as well. I think I started watching Honey & Clover at some point but don't think I finished it. Some of the shit I bought back then would probably make me cry right now if saw it. I remember one about a tough guy who had a girlfriend on his hand or something?

Quote
3) Fruits Basket

Guy I used to work with recommended it, and not liking it very much, but not finding it offensive, much like School Rumble. But he also recommended shit like Kanon (and anything like it), Colorful, Chobits, I My Me Strawberry Eggs and was an obsessive Naruto/Bleach fan, so I learned to keep away from his choices.

holy shit yes! Just watched the opening on youtube, doesn't seem to be as bad as I remember. The opening/closing themes are p. awesome though.

Now I'm watching opening themes for everything I can remember, like I haven't heard the Mahoromatic closing theme in over a decade but still remember it reasonably well.

I feel like Heat Guy J is an under-appreciated series:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8cDZG65SkE

It's a GitS/Cowboy Bebop type show, though not as good as either, about this underfunded government office that consists of this kid, this girl, and this cool robot guy who have to get authorization to take a few shots of ammo out of safe when they investigate future crimes. And it's got Escaflowne faces.

i respect scryed, but fairy tail?? jesus, that show (well, the manga) is escalating fan service of the worst order -- duder's drawing straight up yuri bondage shit now, and the "plots" makes bleach seem like claremont x-men in comparison

Show has been fine- especially when compared to kill la kill, something I couldn't bring myself to watch after the transformation to that 'suit'

Cowboy Bebop obviously.

For movies Millenium Actress is goddamn amazing.  I keep saying someone should remake it as a live action movie with Jennifer Lawrence and Helen Mirren and make loads of money and get an oscar.

Satoshi Kon also makes anime that actually rises to level of adult, and not the claptrap made for precocious 13 year olds that people say are "cartoons for adults"

Millenium Actress is one of my favorite films of all time, live-action or animated.

Paranoia Agent fell into that trap at times, but Kon still did a great job making a TV series.

RIP.  :(

What happened with the studio trying finish up Dream Machine after he died? Anything? Cancelled?

That's Madhouse, and they shelved it because it would cost money they don't have to finish it. They should just go for broke and throw it up on Kickstarter or something, but I'm sure they'll just leave it on a shelf somewhere instead to collect dust.

I just read some articles about it, sounds like they had 600 of the 1500 shots done and ran out of money. Kickstarter that sucker.

According to this:

It's not so much money but the lack of Kon's vision.

Yeah, I could see that being a problem, too. There just aren't that many anime directors with the kind of talent and vision that Kon had, maybe Miyazaki or Kawajiri or Nakamura [except that Miyazaki is too old, Kawajiri has always been a B-movie lover on top of now being mostly retired, and Nakamura is dead, too]. Yoshiura might could do it, but I think he's still too young, and Shinkai is more about lovingly-rendered visuals than depth. Uhh...Hosoda?

So, yeah, maybe four or five directors in the entire industry that might could possibly step in and make it happen.

Well, yeah. I mention satoshi kon around people who only think ghibli is good and they don't take my opinion seriously despite having a lot of anime experience. They're like only ghibli makes anime that's tolerable, and I'm all watch a satoshi kon movie or the girl who leapt through time or rurouni kenshin: trust and betrayal or something

and they're all NOPE

Anime TV:

1. Cowboy Bebop
2. FLCL
3. Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex
4. Baccano!
5. Mushishi

Manga:

1. Blade Of The Immortal
2. BLAME!
3. Basilisk
4. Hunter x Hunter
5. One Piece

Haven't been into anime/manga since 2008. I've watched maybe one or two shows a year since then. I did enjoy Attack On Titan last year though. Was a flawed show but the good parts made up for it, I thought.

it's hard to not blame them because anime fans can have spotty tastes. i only listen to specific people anime recs because my tastes are very selective. i do not take every single anime rec seriously from just about anybody. you have to earn your keep to send me an anime rec and that usually leaves it to close animu buds.

i've read of puni-puni poemi as "THE FOLLOW UP OF EXCEL SAGA THAT WAS TOO GROSS TO SHOW ON TV" but even after watching it i tought it was pretty much on the par (well ok i guess there is this ridicolous joke were everybody suddenly sprout boobs so big that they cover the whole screen) and actualy tought was funny too

EDIT: oh yeah i totaly forgot about the alien with the swinging testicle! it's a good thing this anime came out before internet moral brigade were a thing :lol

Yeah, I was a puni puni hitokage victim as well :/ - I mean there's the obvious issues with almost all of its content- but what was also offensive is that it wasn't even clever- I expected more from the 'follow up' of excel saga

I was looking for anime like Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex. Smart stuff with adult characters. I was recommended
Rin daughters of mnemosyne. I was on Netflix so I thought what the hey. Well, I didn't quite like it. It was a strange erotic thriller , but obviously mixed with 80s anime. Now that sounds cool, but what you get is this strange story about angels who rape immortal women or something, but it's not rape because the women want them. And the villain is some genderless psycho. Our main hero has a sidekick who is really like 500 years old, but looks like a little girl and engages in lesbian sex with a former client.

It just wasn't what I was looking for.

Now these days a lot of the anime community wants to recommend stuff like Gurls and Panzer. Yeah I'm sure it's fine, but it dosen't look like my cup of tea. Or even worse, Valvrave.
