gaf going bananas over graphics in favor of gameplay yet again. Mirror of Fate was a disgrace to the Castlevania series and yet MercurySteam keeps em coming. I guess sales >>> gameplay.

Says the chump who is going to buy this game.

You are part of the problem. It is YOUR fault Castlevania is DEAD
-
Oscar's GOTY :rejoice
-
The first game upset me. But ever since they announced this would be the last CV game from these chumps, I've been less cranky. Wherever the series goes after this, at least it didn't suffer long.
But they'll shit on Contra next :'(

Psh. Konami dosen't make games anymore. Its this or nothing.
-
Actually if Cox and Mercurysteam hadn't come along, we'd assuredly still be getting IGA's games, probably continuing down the Ecclesia/Rebirth path. So it was actually this or something a lot closer to proper CV.
I really wish there were HD ports of Contra/Castlevania Rebirth on DD services :'(
-
Ecclesia was :zzz
it seems like we're fucked no matter what
-
i'm sure it was.
-
Ecclesia was IGA going outside of the box a bit. It wasn't the best, or even his best, but it was encouraging. It was also a considerably better game than Castlespainia.
Ecclesia also ramped up the challenge a bit. Wasn't IGAs last castlevania game harmony of despair a success for Xbox live? Considering the low budget.
-
Ecclesia was awesome. Harmony of Despair raked it in, I believe. Due to the $15 entry fee coupled with a large amount of high priced DLC, which the fans (myself included) ate up. It was an amazing game when the community was there

Motherfucking tragedy, that. SUCH a good game.

aw yiss. This is what the Castlevania series is now. No more of that sidescroller trash.

That hurts less, since the series is currently dormant and it won't even be the first time shitty western devs poop all over Contra.
Best not be talking about Contra IV :maf
-
Well, on the plus side, that Carmilla chick looks stacked, so there's that.
-
GameInformer gave the game a 6/10 and said it is worse than first one :lol
The Spanish experiment gotta be over. Time to bring back IGA.
-
Time to get some F2P IAP gaming up in that bitch!

On one hand its "game informer :lol they suck" but on the other its "game informer not giving their usual 8/9/10 so it must be really bad :lol "

Is this game back in a medieval setting?
After the 1st ending, I thought that the game was moving into the modern era.

Its both

that score with all that hatting? :ohhh
now i'm curious to see how it pans out at other places

So glad to see this game being so terrible it can't even score well with the audience its made for. The first game was just so, so, so bad. But so many magazines ate it up. Mercury Steam sucks. And they're not pulling a Double Helix and slightly improving (supposedly, we'll see with Strider) over the years. Time to forget about them and stop funding their games.

GAF is brain dead, dude.

Because the game has the name "Castlevania" attached to it and some people are just that desperate for anything associated with it.
I couldn't even get through the demo for the original game before getting sick of it. I want Castlevania, not God Of War. :'(
At least Mirror Of Fate was more CV-like...but unfortunately nowhere near enough. Sold that off and didn't bother with the HD version.
-
It isn't outright terrible, but damn is it a boring piece of shit.
Patrick Stewart taking the ham to 11 in the final parts was fucking enjoyable/hilarious tbh

Wouldn't know, couldn't force myself through the 50%+ portion of the game where he sounded completely bored and disinterested.
Indeed :lol
Maybe that's what made the last half shenanigans hilarious to me.
-
why does this exist
-
why does this exist
Because you keep touching yourself
-
I dunno, most of the Castlevania fans I know range from indifference to outright hatred of LoS. Most of its fanbase seems to be composed of people who liked CV's concept but weren't interested in the games at all. I think its popularity on GAF comes from a few things. It's got a handful of people who are very invested in it, there's a defined group of people who want to fight those that like it so fans can play the hipster/victim card, and the game isn't outright terrible.
I remember you following along when I played this and posted about the electric spider room and how the game design was TERRIBLE and you were like "yes, yes it is".
It's not the worst game ever made or anything, and I've played worse even in the past years, but the gameplay in LoS is so bad I don't think I could say it isn't outright terrible with a straight face. The only thing LoS has going for it is:
1) Graphics
2) Music
3) Cutscenes
4) Story
It's not even like the story is anything great, but it's ok for videogame storytelling and the cutscenes which are the best part are actually fairly well directed with good pacing, angles, tension. The problem is the game underneath it sucks. Cox made a decent movie, but shit game. I never finished LoS either, ended up giving in about 10 hours in or something and watching the rest of the cutscenes on youtube. I might youtube the cutscenes for LoS out of curiosity, but I'd never touch the game after LoS1's gameplay.
-
it's just not Castlevania.
Atleast Curse of Darkness feels like a CV game.

yes the IGA game...it had an explorable World and a shit load of equipment and weapons.
-
I thought they were OK. Recognizably Castlevania at the very least.
-
I liked Iga's first PS2 3d game. Lament of Innocence was it? I mean it was just Devil May Cry, but at least it felt like DMC Castlevania.
-
Demo impressions aren't positive.
Is Curse Of Darkness worth a rental?
-
Nanobreaker :lawd
-
yeah, demo wasn't good. positive stuff: you can turn off QTEs, which makes me wonder why you wouldn't turn off QTEs. runs well on PC.
also, using a sotn line/meme out of context is so absolutely tone deaf. and it's read by a bored scotsman.
-
Robert Carlyle was so bored in the first one. I like the dude but that shit was phoned the fuck in.
Is Nanobreaker worth checking out?
-
yeah, the cast of the first game was awesome but everyone sounded tired and bored.
-
yeah, just tried this demo, these clowns haven't learned a thing. another so-so god of war knock-off incoming.
4 years and they haven't learned a thing? Time to get these clowns to mobile games development.
-
The first game had some of the most embarrassingly bad writing. I hope they continue the tradition.
-
Apparently EDGE gave it a 4 :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
i really hope that's true

gaf explosion in 5..4..3..2..1
-
don't worry, the reviewer probably just sucks at the game/has a feminist agenda/is a butthurt IGA fan/didn't play the whole game/is a weeaboo
it's just EDGE! Except when they give my favorite game high scores. I hate that gaf mentality.
-
Rip Castlevania.
-
Seems they have been discussing some of the review in the demo thread (with brandon83 stanning the fuck out of the game :lol) so i guess the score is legit.
speaking of the demo i downloaded, played it and i'm like
:beli
wasted that space for fucking nothing.
-
Demo was really boring. Got sick of mashing attack on the same stupid knight enemy over and over. Fighting on top of a giant enemy was kinda cool back in 2010 but nowadays it's like meh.
The "What is a man, a miserable pile of secrets" line that they put in there to masturbate Castlevania nostalga seemed pretty forced.
-
I enjoyed the demo. That platforming is BAD tho.
-
haha gaf seems shocked over the low Review scores :D

From its beginnings with 8-bit classics like Metroid, through its rebirth in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and several games in the series since -- right up to the current generation of hardware -- "Metroidvania"-style games' mix of action/adventure and exploration/backtracking has stood the test of the time. Wow. :lol
From GAF:
I thought this deserved its own thread. User Kingshango from the Castlevania dungeon has had constant comunication with a Mercurysteam employee since months ago; now with Lords of Shadow 2 released and under polarized critics and confused fans, a new chapter begins: The man blames Enric Alvarez, studio director for being up on his own asshole becoming a tyrant after the LoS1 release, details silent layoffs and resignations as that of the Art director of the first game and other important employees.
This was translated from spanish with lots of mistakes. but still. Full testimony:
Good , before going into the new turn of events , I would like to shed some light on the development of this game ... Working with Mercury Steam, and I would like to tell anonymousl so they donn't recognize me, is about the frustrations and information everyday from here. This is dedicated to all of us that have left the skin in the development of this game, but especially those that have precipitated nto the mess that is Lords of Shadows 2 . - Kojima had little or nothing to do with the development of the first game , set a seal , visited the studio, we signed things and that's it ... no one thinks otherwise . The vast majority of this team is aware that the game we've done is a real shit... Nobody is surprised by the reviews the reviews nor the average marks obtained . - The weight of the guilt should charge who should carry, Enric Alvarez . It is certainly the person who has achieved dent the development of this game based on their personal criteria jumping over programmers, designers and art. Despite the good image in front of the press, creative "visionary" in the style of David Cage and Molyneaux , this guy has serious problems. It is a mean and naughty person, since the " success Lords of Shadows 1" his ego has grown to the edge of not being able to say hello when you meet him in the hallway.
The distrust of his own workers is enormous . People in this business usually find out things before us by the press ...that's unfortunate . And there is no corporate culture, zero ... a handful of people working blind and at the mercy of the vagaries of an alleged visionary. - The internal structure is archaic, based on the old partners of Scrapland times . For people to get an idea , the engine with its many shortcomings, was uniquely developed by two people , one of them a member of the company and Enric's confident. Access to new programmers is impossible to renew core ... things are still done like10 years ago . - Many of the founders of the company are department heads, people with zero mentalities regarding the direction and delegation of responsibilities. In most cases, the bloke developers know more than their bosses. This structure helps the general stagnation of development , proof of this is the end result of the Lords of Shadows 2 . - Absolutely all design decisions should be monitored , appropriate and maimed by Enric Alvarez.
Several designers have grown tired of this. - The art direction in this project has been erratic and beheaded . First overturning ideas from the art director of the earlier projects , he decided to leave. It was a battle of egos by Enric Alvarez, he was here since the times of Rebel Act Tequila and is currently working on developing Ryme . - Many people have decided to listen to outside offers , weary of the pace and progress of the company. Rare is the month we do not see people picking up their things and getting out . It's amazing that the biggest game developer in Spain AAA not even have the shame to offer people a counteroffer . This company does not appreciate his talented workers and their good work . There has never been bonus or anything that resembles it . Not even a "Good job team!" - The organization in production project is harmful , often the heads of each department dismissed production deadlines superimposing their own criteria. Proof of this is that development was delayed for six months paid out of pocket Mercury Steam. -
Many can not help but see the parallels between the decline of the company and one where many have worked prior, Rebel Act Games.. - The QA department is treated like cattle , with wages of shame and unfortunate deal. The treatment in general is unfortunate for their folly and cutrez levels of heads . - Expectations for the future are quite void ... with a publisher like Konami tht is not happy ay all after the mediocrity we've made ... - After developing Lords of Shadows 2, the company I work for has laid off about 35 workers , coincidentally this has not been said or filtered in any medium. New layoffs are not discarded soon. And finally , why are not all bad things , the human team of this company is incredible. If the majority of people who are not allowed to rise because of this Jurassic caste, I had the opportunity to decide the new direction of the company , I am convinced that things would change very much . There is a quality as I've ever seen, but contained in the worst jars . I hope those who read this, understand (or not) what I've outlined here . If someone does not say it will be forgotten and will not be echoed behind the furor launch.

the idiot length of the first game and the dialogue reeked of an auteur-type personality driving things, and i don't think they really hid the fact that kojima didn't do much other than vouch for them and get iga japan-fired once the first game started to get some positive buzz.
God, I really fucking hate Kojima. Even more now.

These pics make me want to play it more, actually. Still have it on GameFly.

i just hope whoever handles castlevania next, whenever that may be, does a better job of it. mercurysteam's legacy with the franchise is basically one game that is at least arguably in the top tier of 3d castlevanias, one game that is the actual worst 2d castlevania since legends on the game boy, and one game that is the worst 3d castlevania ever made. like iga or not, he was at least more consistent than that.
It was Kojima who canned iga?

50% of game development is establishing and enforcing a consistent naming scheme for game assets.
The other 50% is actually talking to people on your team.

I would say there's no way he didn't know what the result would be when he pushed for MS's pitch in favor of IGA's proposed game.

Kojimsa didn't beat around the bush when talking shit about old rising. Or anything not kojimsa. His public reasoning for still making metal gears is something like: no one else is good enough. And then he laments that he's still making metal gear.
-
lol the head of mercurysteam gave the most horrible interview
says he was never a fan of castlevania before, the games weren't his cup of tea, any reviewer who gave his game a 4/10 must be blind or stupid, mirror of fate was unfairly mistreated by the media, and pretty much saying any bad reviews were because of a lack of ability. oh, and if you didn't like the story of lords of shadow 2, that's just because it was so deep that you didn't understand it.
what a fucking clownshoe.
oh, and apparently los2 is the most expensive spanish-produced game ever. better hope those sales come in better than the reviews did, konami!
link to this interview? Oh great a developer who handles a classic franchise actually dont give a shit about the series. Heads should roll at Konami.

his own bumblefuck team of junior woodchucks. not technically outsourcing, but i'm pretty sure anything that isn't handled by kojima at konami is considered outsourcing these days.
i haven't played rising so i guess it will sound like i'm talking out of my ass but honestly i would have prefered a kojima game made by KCET rather than platinum doing another action game that sort of look like their other action games

and thats why you're the bore's comic relief

This game is absolute GARBAGE. It actually make sthe first game look competent.
What the fuck did I just play. Fuck my life.

Alucard is in this game at most 20 minutes.

Speaking of, feel free to watch the ending. Yup, that's the ending. No special scene, nothing. The DLC takes place before the game starts, so that's largely useless, since you already know about it in the ending.
Fuck this game. Turd turd turd.
-
It's that bad huh.
Castlevania is dead.
-
IGA's not-vania Kickstarter will be happening soon though so whatever.
-
They got this stupid open world thing - not particularly open world, though, but it gives the illusion. Of course they make you pass over a bunch of collectables (I think there's some odd 200+ collectables in this game), because you unlock abilities.
Only at the very end of the game do they explain why Dracula loses all his powers in the first place. Of course everyone's cool with it, almost like they're telling you why you just played this game.
Dracula is bitch made as well, crying over his bitch made son, and his bitch made wife.
Most of the game has you being transported between the past (which isnt really the past? it's apparently inside his head) and the present, but while you're in the past I mean his head, you get attacked by his blood which has taken a mind of its own and turns stuff evil. Then you fight his blood in a boss fight.
The ending doesnt even make sense either, since the whole time Dracula is like OH I JUST WANT TO DIE FUCK MY LIFE SHIT
Then when you beat Satan, he crushes the Mirror of Fate and says like any other 6th grader - we'll see what fate has in store for us. Then he walks into his church in Castlevania City YES ITS CALLED CASTLEVANIA CITY AND PEOPLE MADE A CITY USING DRACULAS CASTLE but anyway he doesnt even die like the whole game was about. Alucard is just like, ok, uh, whatever. And sits there.
I didnt even bother to play after I beat it. Threw that bitch olympian style into the mailbox. See ya. Turd.

my guess is that with the first one, they went in with the mindset that they had something to prove. they were taking the series away from a very beloved creator, and from japan too, and they probably weren't given a huge budget, so they were super-careful and tried their best to make the best game they could. and it is mercurysteam's best game by far.
then they got good reviews and the game sold really well and konami probably gave them a bigger budget along with the keys to the franchise, so they went into this thinking "we got this shit" and bit off way the fuck more than they could chew. at some point it was probably clear that was happening, which is likely where this "los2 is the end of the los series" talk started coming from, but it was obviously too late to turn things around with any reasonable expenditure of time/resources.
let's just hope castlevania goes to a competent developer this time.
