Yes, there are 28k people currently playing L4D2 on steam to prep for L4D3 announcement. That makes it even less impressive. What were the numbers BEFORE the L4D3 teasing?

The past week has averaged 20k+ per day concurrent, coming down from a peak of 160k concurrent on December 23rd.

I'm not talking about this case. I'm talking about the L4D3 RUMORS that have been pervasive for about a month or two. It's similar to Portal. When Valve secretly hid hints to Portal 2 in a patch, Portal had a huge uptick in users. The same rationale could be used for L4D2 players, especially with the (iirc) recently dlc and patch that hints at L4D3. And yet it still only has 20k users?

That's 20k at one time, which doesn't really say much about the total number of unique users per day [except, obviously, that the number is larger than 20k].

Considering the leap just in terms of level and crescendo design that they pulled off in one year between the first two, it's exciting to consider what they'll have come up with over the last five (?!?) years.

Though it'll be hard to top that first time through Hard Rain. That alone justified not just 2 but the entire franchise.
