Title: March is almost here, are you going to buy anything?
Post by: Cerveza mas fina on February 24, 2014, 06:06:12 PM
I heard there is some big games coming in March. Are you guys buying anything or waiting for the inevitable price drops and play old games in the mean time?

I'm kind of tempted by Titanfall but even more so by South Park.

I don't really need to buy them now though since I have waaaaaaay too much to play, but then again I kind of want to thank Obsidian for making South Park  :'( :-\ (yes horrible reason I know ha ha)

Yup, though holding off on some stuff like Dark Souls II since I still need to get back and finish Dark Souls 1 (lost my save when PS3 died, gonna restart on PC and do the whole thing through).  Don't care about Titanfall because it doesn't have single player and that's all I play.

Got South Park for like $30 a few years ago on an Amazon pre-order and surprisingly it's still good!  Always up for new Obsidian <3 <3
MGSV Ground Zeroes is probably my most awaited next-gen game until Uncharted PS4 / MGSV PP so can't wait to get that and play the shit out of its one 30 min location.
Getting Infamous for that Infamous good times.

And just got Yakuza Isshin on PS4 this morning, so yeah, it's a good month for gaming.  Gonna finish what I can before the mother of all 2014 games comes out in April 10th with Super Robot Wars Z3 Part 1 (and Jane Jenson's Mobius is out April 15th too!)

South Park
Final Fantasy X Remaster
Dark Souls 2 -- eventually, havent played the first one yet...

Titanfall - pass, multiplayer only call of duty
MGSV - pass, apparent demo
Yaiba - rental, depending on reviews and impressions
Infamous - no PS4
Deception IV - Would probably prefer Vita version, but kinda interested in this at some point

South Park will play just fine a few months from now at $25
I'll buy inFamous because I like the series okay, I have $10 in Best Buy Bucks to put towards it, and it is starting to feel like I bought a $400 BF4 machine
Maybe Titanfall, maybe - seems like it might be too twitchy for me
I keep seeing where Dying Light is supposedly coming out in March, but I'll believe it when I see it on a shelf

I'm interested in South Park but I'm waiting for the reviews... got Dark Souls II reserved, even though I haven't played through the first game or Demon's yet. Maybe finally pick up DKCR: Tropical Freeze.

Titanfall: Thinking about buying it on PC
Metal Gear Solid V: Buying it on PS4
Infamous: Second Son: Buying it

I'm really thinking about whether or not I want to go ahead and start getting into Final Fantasy XIV Online now on the PC since apparently that version can transfer progress over to the PS4 version as well so I might buy that too? I dunno. I'm going to pick up Injustice tomorrow on PS4 since it's only going to be $25 and I haven't had a fighting game in a while.

Final Fantasy X HD Remaster and that's it.

It's weird, FFX is one of my favorite FFs and I love picking up the HD versions of the Kingdom Hearts games and GBA/DS remakes of the old FF games and I'd buy FFXII International HD without question...but I have zero interest in FFX/X-2 HD.  I feel like they were good games, but it's too soon to be replaying them.  I feel the same way about FFXIII/FFIX as well.  Not really sure why; I know there's inconsistencies in these statements, just never had the slightest interest in X/X-2 remasters.  I think with games like KH the additions actually improve the gameplay experience (better framerate, better camera).

Same. I know some people on here are really into that game but it feels like it came out 5 years ago to me. I have literally no interest unless it was on sale for like 5 to 10 dollars.

I dunno, FF10 just doesn't seem like a game I'd want to replay.  In my mind I can't remember any of the gameplay at all, it's just like a movie in my memories and one I'd rather leave as is because I know if I watched it today I'd probably like it a lot less.  For its time it was mind-blowing and a huge advancement for rpg presentation.  Today...not sure how I feel...

Story and characters are still great in FFX. Gameplay is blah but can still be fun. You should be getting it for X-2 anyways.

Christmas PART DEUX is kinda lukewarm this year.

BUY:
Yumi's Odd Odyssey - If it doesn't come out this week
Shovel Knight - Picking this up for the Wii U
inFAMOUS: Second Son - Can't wait!

RENT:
South Park - Maybe buy if demi says I should
Titanfall - No single-player makes this a definite rental
MGSV: Ground Zeroes - I'm in for the superior PS4 version

DUNNO:
Final Fantasy X-X2 HD - Want to buy it but not sure if it's a good port
Putty Squad - Sort of interested in this remake of an old-ass Amiga game
Zoo Tycoon - Curious to see how this came out but not sure if I have the time for it

Buying:

Titanfall (PC)
Sengoku Musou 4 (Vita)
J-Stars Victory Vs. (Vita)
J-Stars Victory Vs. (PS3)

These are in the "will buy if I can afford them" pile:

Sengoku Musou 4 (PS3)
Deception IV: Blood Ties (Vita)
Infamous Second Son (PS4)

And in the "if I can get it on the cheap or maybe even Redbox it pile:

Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes

Normally I could probably get away with just about everything here, but money that would be used for games is going to pay the movers in a few weeks.  Apartment management forcing us to move is affecting my gaming enjoyment  :punch :punch :punch

Been a good month for sure, probably the best month 2013 will have for gaming until Oct or Nov if the big winter hitters turn out good.  Grabbed:

South Park - Was/is awesome.  Greatly satisfied
MGSV Ground Zeroes - Amazing game, Greatly satisfied
Infamous SS - Seems fantastic so far 3-4 hours in, better than expected and very satisfied
Metro Last Light for cheap - haven't played yet but heard good things
The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav & Memoria for cheap - haven't played yet, heard the first one's solid and Memoria is a great adventure game
Expeditions Conquistadors for cheap - Haven't played, looks cool
Volgarr the Viking for cheap - haven't played yet, but heard it's real good
Shin Megami Tensei for iOS - Probably should've have bought this, but it was $6 and curiosity.  Doubt I'll ever spend the 30-40 hours to play it through.

I got Yumi's Odd Odyssey.  And Adventure Island II.

Is this actually good or is everyone buying it purely out of nostalgia?  I played the original and it was kind of neat but pretty dated in controls by the time I got around to playing it.  Slightly interested in the new one if it plays a little more modern.

Pretty weird to say people are buying something out of nostalgia for a series that's never had a single release outside Japan before, though.  I've seen some stretching of the word  'nostalgia' in my time, but seriously, man.

What's weird about it?  I know I'm not the only one out there who has been importing games since the 90s...the original is what...20 years old already?  And the PS1 game, that most people familiar with this game would have played, came out in 1997.

What do you mean by more modern, exactly?  Cuz honestly, the image in my head when someone asks that question is usually something like this:

Gonna assume he means "improved controls from the original version".

I bought Yumi but it's FUCKING THIRTY DOLLARS. I've seen free iOS apps that have more production value and effort put into them! A cash-in demo of MGSV that Konami is charging $30 for is a much better value than this. Avoid that shit at all costs.

In other news it's a pretty cool game that I'm glad I can finally legally play without having to import.

Yeah, I meant better controls.  A lot of games during the PS1/Saturn era had really shitty controls for some reason.  Even 2d platformers.  When I played the original the controls weren't terrible, but they were janky for sure and it didn't feel smooth to control.  A lot of that had to do with the framerate, probably?  Most PS1/Saturn games also had really bad framerates!  Hopefully this one is pretty smooth?

By nostalgia I was mainly going by seeing certain that I know (not you) totally freak out about this game when it was announced like HOLY SHIT A NEW UMIHARA KAWASE game OMG I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE IT'S GOING TO BE THE BEST GAME EVER LIKE THE ORIGINAL when all they were going on was a 15 year old+ game that apparently was awesome in its time but doesn't really hold up as great today.  I feel like if a developer makes 1 good game and then doesn't touch on it again and then 15-20 years later decides "hey, it would be cool to do a sequel"...people change a lot in 15-20 years as does the industry and development environment (relative budgets) and I don't think a great game of 15-20 years ago necessarily means a great sequel today.  Which is why I'm also weary of certain kickstarters where the developers haven't done anything in 20 years and are going to make BEST GAME EVER!!(tm) because game development is like riding a bike!  And they'll totally make the best modern 2014 game by using the same skills they had to make the best 1991 game with stick figures and 3 buttons and black and white.

I go see movies where I like the directors and see them constantly putting out good films every few years.  Same thing with game directors like Kamiya or Takahashi who constantly put out good products and are always staying on top of game design and working to improve their games.  Look at the Star Wars prequels.  Going by "The IP was good 20 years ago when this person made it" just seems like a way to be disappointed most of the time.

/shrug, I never said anything about price/content.  I was just wondering if it came out in Japan and was well received as a good game so people are buying it, or if people are buying it because it's a sequel to a classic game that has a cult following and that means it has to be awesome.

I know, I was just saying that the price for this game is insane. Needed to get that out there and I wasn't about to create a Yumi thread.

Also there is a strong nostalgia aspect for the very small and niche import crowed. I remember the original game being a big deal in SNES import circles and the same with PS1 so I imagine there's a few people out there that find this release nostalgic in the US. Granted it's probably like 1,000 people but it's there.

Hell I played my friend's copy on the SNES back in the day, that's why I even know about this game. His parents managed a game import/export business so I'm probably in the extreme minority.

I don't even know what version I played to be honest.  I thought it was PS1, but maybe it was a PSP port or a DS port of the PS1 game that was polygonal?  Didn't even realize it was an SFC game.  Was 3-4 years back and I played it because some people were hyping it up and it looked interesting.  Didn't play a lot of it because the controls turned me off after an hour or so.  I like swinging in games, hence why I like stuff like Castlevania, but the controls on whatever I played felt like those wonky physics games but even wonkier because it was old and the framerate was not that great.

The framerate...in a 2D game?   ???

That's what stopped me from buying it.  Make it say, $10 and I'll give it a whirl.

:lol Yeah, the only reason I even have the game on PS1 is due to so many people online spooging all over it years back.  I picked up a copy for like 500 yen.  Way before that, we used to have a copy of the game that just sat on the shelf during my game store days.  Nobody wanted it.

They have framerates too, yeah. Drawing stuff in 2D isn't free as far as processing time goes.

Yeah, sure.  But I can't remember framerate being a big issue in 2D games during that period.  3D games, absolutely.  A lot of them have aged horribly.

I think shmups on the SNES were probably the biggest offenders for bad framerate.
