I haven't really seen too much about the actual gameplay of the game, but is it more Japanese or western in style, for lack of a better term? Like, in terms of gameplay progression (linear? hub/mission based? dialogue trees?)

I'm not really sure what your complaint/concern is here. Just kinda confused.

Nevermind, you're hard of hearing and rely on subtitles/captions, right?

It's South Park. Did you really expect to be able to make a girl character? The boys and girls don't really play "together" much.

I can understand everything on South Park so it's less about hearing and more about presentation. Plus, subtitles are useful when everyone is sleep. I play all games with subtitles even if I can understand everything. When subtitles are paragraphs it's hard to resist reading this entire block of text, which often spoils the dialogue. Subtitle dialogue is there to supplement and show whatever is being said on screen. With subtitle paragraphs, you're often reading something 10-15 seconds before they say it. It's cheap, lazy, and dogshit.

As for the girl thing, I read in many previews that it was possible.

Can't wait to play this tonight!  Read the reviews and am bummed that the battle system sounds shallow (I hope it's at least a lot better than Costume Quest, this is Obsidian we are talking about) and the interface is clumsy and style over substance.

But excited for short-ass-to-the-point-game meaning I can actually finish it in a reasonable time, great graphics and apparently really good writing/humor.

Sounds good to me, hopefully can get through it by the time Ground Zeroes/Infamous comes out.

Title: Re: South Park Stick of Truth - A JRPG I dont have to be embarassed to play
Post by: Himu on March 04, 2014, 09:58:09 PM
I could tell that from the video months back. Took like 2 minutes to complete one turn.

The main reason I want this is for comedy and writing. I'm not expecting anything from the gameplay.

Slow, very easy and tedious. It's baby's first JRPG.

Can't be worse than Costume Quest, can it?  That was the worst rpg I've ever played.
Title: Re: South Park Stick of Truth - A JRPG I dont have to be embarassed to play
Post by: MyNameIsMethodis on March 04, 2014, 10:02:07 PM
It's not even nayweres close to costume quest. it's not slow at all, it's just fuck easy. I have ti on hardest difficulty and the only challenge is you get enemies who can summon more enemies. It's like Persona Golden on the easiest difficulty.

Actually that's a good comparison, it's like Persona 4 speed.

Post by: Bebpo on March 04, 2014, 10:18:05 PM
Eh, considering 99% of wrpgs and jrpg battle systems are brain dead these days, that's not really a deal killer.

Post by: Himu on March 04, 2014, 10:21:15 PM
I can deal with Persona 4 speed. That's pretty fast. But videos I've seen of Stick of Truth aren't that fast.

Post by: Joe Molotov on March 04, 2014, 10:26:34 PM
lol, you guys are crazy. It doesn't take two minutes to complete a turn unless you're really thinking about your move. Some battles might take two minutes in total, boss fights longer, but there's not really that many. I've played for nearly 10 hours and fought maybe 60-70 battles, and that's including about 10 optional bosses.

Post by: Stoney Mason on March 04, 2014, 10:30:18 PM
Played for a few hours. I enjoy it. But that's due to a love of the source material that the devs and the South Park guys have put on display. It reminds me of Simpsons Hit and Run not because anything is similar gameplay wise but because its the last time I remember a project that was clearly a labour of love versus a half assed licensed cash-in.

I honestly don't care about the gameplay stuff. Whether its too easy or whatever. If you expected some real kind of game here you came in with the wrong expectations and I think that's on you. The reason to play is the humour and to see how they inject South Park jokes and tropes in an rpg context. So far that's been enough for me although I'm not sure if that can strongly last over the course of a full game. But from the bit I played I laughed and enjoyed it. If it can keep that up, then that's all that matters.

It's a South Park video game.
It's Obsidian. (I know other people on this board and other boards think very highly of them. I'm not among that group)

I don't expect high quality "game" from either of those two things. I mentioned the same months ago. But everybody is entitled to their own perceptions.

It's a humour product first and foremost. And a game after that.  I picked the "jew" class to play because I thought that would introduce more jokes. Not because of any gameplay reason. The whole product works that way. If you come in with those expectations I think its fine. It's funnier than just about any game in recent memory imo. If you came in with the reverse expectations then you are probably not enjoying the game right about now.

Just my take.

For what its worth I think Obsidian has done credible work here. I think its a decently fine dead simple rpg wrapped up in the South Park Universe. It was never going to be Baldur's Gate 3. I think it feels more polished than anything they've done recently and I think the nature of the product and the product they delivered are actually in sync for once. I think they delivered a funny dead simple RPG. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Post by: Bebpo on March 04, 2014, 11:29:06 PM
This game is great so far (about an hour in) battle system is waaaay deeper than I expected from the Paper Mario comparisons.  Actually has important stuff like positioning, buffs/debuffs, stances, etc...  I got destroyed in one of the first battles because I didn't figure out how to prioritize which enemies to attack and what attacks to use.  I get that if the game is super easy you can avoid all that stuff, but it's neat there's actually some thought in the combat.   Battles are pretty quick since both sides hit HARD (which is how I like rpg battle systems).

Exploration is fun, running around the neighborhood looking for secrets and friends.  The graphics look like the show and the writing has good stuff.  Interface is fine, I don't know why people were complaining.  There's shortcuts to like all the important pages.  Equipping stuff is easy.

Only complaint at this time is that the world map is kind of hard to read.

I kind of wonder if anyone is not playing the Jew class?

This game is really freaking good.  So much fun and everything is just really polished and done right.  Love the customization and battle system and lots of quests!  Probably the best game I've played in 2014 so far.  Extremely satisfied with my purchase.

The game really feels like what Costume Quest wanted to be, but was nowhere near.

Are there more jokes related to the Jew class?  Might have to start over.

This game is great; it feels like a weird thing to say, but I'm really impressed with the visuals.  Everything is exactly the same as the show and it really feels like you've been inserted right into an episode.  There's tons of references to past plotlines and characters; if you like South Park, this game is a must-buy.

My only gripe right now is that this game doesn't have Steam Cloud support.  I wanted to be able to easily go between playing on my tablet and desktop.  For now I'm playing on my tablet since it runs perfectly at 720P.  Hooked it up to the TV and found some stutter/audio sync problems in certain cut scenes when the resolution was set to 1080P, but 720P looks great so it's not a big deal.

It's awesome.  If you don't like South Park, you won't like this...but why would you play a South Park game if you don't like it?   Playing on normal, I think the combat is generally too easy, but I don't really care since I'm not playing the game for that anyway.

Beat teh gaem. Took about 13 hours, according to Steam time. I still need to find the last four friends and finish the Hobo and Underpants quests (which I'm sure will net me at least two of the friends). Also missed two of the Chimpokomons.

Sounds like a fun game. Everyone here is enjoying it

It's awesome.  If you don't like South Park, you won't like this...but why would you play a South Park game if you don't like it?   Playing on normal, I think the combat is generally too easy, but I don't really care since I'm not playing the game for that anyway.

I love South park.

I can understand thinking this way. But honestly, the short length just means that it's far more likely that I might actually finish this game. For instance, I'm like 11 hours into Bravely Default, and I know that there's next to no chance that I'll ever finish that game because I'm nowhere near the end.

Yeah, I'm pretty much in the same boat as tiesto right now though. I don't wanna end up buying it at full price and it ends up dropping in price before I get around to playing it.

Btw, I thought PC versions of games were suppose to be cheaper? Did this change recently?

Games from bigger publishers sometimes launch at 59.99.

You can still find decent launch deals. You just have to keep your ears open a few weeks prior to release. GMG often has good pre-lease deals.

i played this up to the point where you learn fart magic and i'm ashamed to admit that i am having fun, (i can see the weeaboo police coming to take my weeaboo badge pretty soon :'() it's so nice having a game that for once is about super detailed single screens instead of a sandbox/3dish game and the like, it feels like i'm playing an old pc game without it looking like an actual old pc game, i've spent so much time dicking around that the game has actual reprimendaded me multiple times for dicking around :lol you also get tons of shit by doing so,quest, items, collectable, you name it

i think i also know why people have such difference when speaking about the game difficulty,i'm playing on normal and it's not really hard but if you fuck up the timing while attacking you usualy ends up dealing almost no damage and similary if you screw up defense you end up taking lot of damage, timing is essential and adds most of the effect and sometimes it can be hard to block and the like... i like how different item grant you different powers instead of just being number's going up and down

what else... so far it hasn't been much funny but i'd say amusing at least (finaly another game where you can beat an hobo that is not earthbound!) i'm not a big fan of south park and to be honest i kinda dread the more gross scenes but i have seen some of the episode and you can see lot of callback (like you can actualy find "the poop that took a pee")

2 questions

1) if i understand it right summon can be only used once each chapter? that kinda sucks
2) what the heck i'm supposed to do with all the junk i find?

i finished this, it was fun but it kinda feels like it ended somewhat abruptely

spoiler (click to show/hide)
i tought the nazi zombie's joke was funny but the game never moves on, by the time you get to the end you are fighting nazi zombie bacteria's and you realize the joke has overstayed it's welcome... i expected that the plot would go somewhere else, that my character level would go up to 20 instead of 15 and that i would get more weapon better than some random junk i bought from jimbo because it had high number

the final boss totaly feels like a normal encounter too, he doesn't use any special attack, he's not a giant robot monster or devil, he doesn't even have multiple phases... the only thing that makes it different is a gag where your party member are forced to leave the battle for one reason or another (except kartman who never enters in the first place because he's kartman)
[close]

the thing that really makes the game enjoyable it's that there is lot of variety and it's all executed with big detailed cartoony graphic, it never feels like it drags out and it's really well paced... the combat never gets hard, everything die's in a few hit and in fact later on i gained a special move that often instant-killed the whole enemy party

there are a few videogames joke that are funny (like an audio log complaining about the absurdity of audio logs) but most of the humor is made up by south park jokes, none the less i have watched only some south park episode and was still able to get most of them

one videogame joke that seems popular but fell flat on me

it' the part of the game where you visit canada which is represented as a 16-bit rpg, i tought it would be hilarious but the whole section is made up of repetitive music and several fetch quest in what i can't decide if it's just a bad part of the game or a very meta meta-joke

by south park tradition is also full of jokes that are gross so it doesn't surprise me that this got censored, but the most gross bit is the one i mention in the previous post which is...

i also find funny about himu complaining about not being able to make a female character because there is a part of the game that is pretty sexist that wouldn't really work if they gave you such an option :lol

but anyway,it was good and unlike similiar rpg recent effort it wasn't made up of stuff from other games, stuff repeated from previous chapter, quest that involve collecting 5 flowers and overused fantasy/anime/jrpg clichè so thumbs up!

OK I take it back! It's a cool game but I totally expected way better then what I got from reading the thread. This is the most South Park thing ever and that is awesome but fucking hell the gameplay completely sucks. Combat is tedious and are there any new jokes? I'm already bored of running around the town, lol.

Performance is pretty shit too but that might be a PS3 only thing? Not joking, literally every single time the auto-save pops up the game stutters badly. It auto-saves every time you enter a new area so I've already gotten used to waiting a few seconds before being able to play. I assume it's related to saving/loading at the same time from the HDD. My system is from 2009 and nearly full so the HDD might be needing a good optimizing.

How is combat tedious?  Battles don't last more than 1 turn usually, 2 at most.  Meanwhile you can avoid most battles through pre-battle puzzles like interacting with an environment to cause the enemies to get electrocuted and bypass a battle.  Plus you don't need to grind because you hit max level hours before the end of the game.

If you're finding it tedious, I'm wondering if you're missing something as to how the combat works.

Oh no, I get how the combat works. Unlike you I'm finding this game piss easy and as a result it's boring and tedious for me. I mean it's the same basic actions to go through every single fight with very little change up on how the enemies attack. Sure they do status effects but that's nothing my unlimited supply of money and items can't fix. Plus I'm a fighter so I pulverize everything in my way and what I can't kill I have my ally demolish with their special attacks. So yeah, battles do last just one or two rounds at most for me.

I'm finding everything but the gameplay to be awesome. It's just unfortunate I need to slog through a terrible RPG to enjoy a really well crafted love letter to South Park*.

BUT I will say that I think it's really cool that they're making an RPG for casuals and fans of the show. I can bitch about the gameplay since I'm voicing my opinion but really Obsidian probably made the right choice considering the target market so I can't say I disagree with what they've done. And I'm just hating on the gameplay here so before I get anyone's panties in a bunch I think everything else about the game is pretty solid.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
* Seriously though, are there any new jokes? Everything here is recycled content and while I find it amusing it's all shit I've seen before.

I started playing this too (just beat the HS area), and my one big problem is the performance too, like Mr. Slime Appears. The load times are bad, the game stutters like hell on a new area load, and I've had 2 lockups already and one graphical glitch where the map was colored blue. Also I'm not a fan of all the collecta-thoning... a lot of the quests seem to be "find these flags", "find the Chinpokomon", "fight these bums"... the game's a lot like how I'd expect a Ubisoft take on Paper Mario to be.

It's a great love letter to the show though, tons of little in jokes and references of obscure minutia.
