I was surprised that there wasn't even a thread this year. I remember awhile back things got quite contentious this time of year.
Anyway, it looks like things played out pretty well. Gravity got all the visual/audio/directing awards, which is as it should have been. I was happy to see it win Best Score. I remember sitting in the theater thinking that Gravity's score was pretty goddamn amazing (the re-entry scene in particular), and it's good that it got recognized.
I haven't seen Blue Jasmine, so I can't comment on Blanchett's win, but I've heard good things. McConaughey and Leto definitely deserved their trophies. With True Detective, MM's got a good chance to go back to back with film and tv Best Actor awards.
As good as Gravity was, the questionable physics makes me kind of glad it didn't win the big one. 12 Years a Slave was a great choice for BP.
I'm also glad that there was no one film that swept all the big awards. I always hate when that shit happens. The major awards saw representation from 5 or 6 different films, which is an awesome spread.

MM totally deserved his win, but man that speech was awful.
-
It went down exactly as it should have. Nothing controversial about this past year.
Only one that MIGHT be off is Blanchet's win, but all the actresses definitely deserved it.
-
So Leonardo Dicaprio didn't win? Ugh, the internet is going to keep pushing this as a thing aren't they >:(

... so, yes?

I haven't seen any of the movies. Still I was happy to hear Lupita won. Too bad her career will slowly disappear, in Hollywood at least, due to the general lack of roles for black people (especially black women).

Probably my least favorite internet thing. Starting to leak into real life way too much.

Blanchett was tops. No one else came close to her performance in Blue Jasmine.

Even though Gravity may not have realistic physics, it wasn't a major problem since the film was more about understanding human existence than space exploration.
Best thing about 12 Years a Slave winning is that it brought out all the closeted racists. Many people are implying or outright declaring that 12 yrs won simply on the basis of its subject matter and not the film's quality. It's strange because many of those people won't dare to say the same about a Holocaust film. Is it because slave owners just don't seem as evil as Nazis?

Yeah, CB was the clear-cut winner according to most critics

I was eye rolling when i saw that it had won because "another fucking slave movie, oh boy" but shaka sold me on it.

"another fucking slave movie, oh boy"
There's really a surprisingly small amount of major American movies focusing on slaves or slavery, though. Amistad, Beloved, Django, 12 Years, and...?
-
Maybe Himu has a personalized "Movies About American Slavery" category on Netflix that's affecting her perspective?
-
Or maybe Himu's extending the category to all the videos he's seen involving bondage?
-
1. Poor Leo, one of these days he will just get one out of pity
2. Horrible horrible speech by MM, thanking God (lol) anf chasing himself (what a twat)

...shit, that's bad news for me

You know, I'm not religious at all, and I haven't even stepped inside a church for any reason in over a decade, but I don't get what the big deal is about Matthew McConaughey thanking God in his speech. I've been seeing it all over the place, as if it were some controversial statement. Twitter fucks saying they aren't going to watch his movies anymore, shit like that. From some folks reactions, you'd think he stepped out and confessed to stomping puppies to death or something. I think if that (very, very benign) comment bothered you to the point of not wanting to see any more of his movies, that says a whole lot more about you and your level of tolerance than it does him.

I enjoyed MM's performance more in Dazed and Confused than in Dallas Buyers Club.

I don't understand this either. I knew there'd be some bitches as soon as he said it though. It's not like he was up there preaching. It was fucking harmless. His "chasing myself" shit was far more cringe worthy.

So do those same people freak out when every sports player ever thanks God when they win something?
-
Mouth breathers like that don't watch sports

Didn't Tebow's kneeling catch some attention?

Fucking bullshit.
Practically every non-Tyler Perry film featuring black people in recent years is some movie starring black people in submissive roles: The Butler, The Help, and their ilk. Slavery, or as a maid, that is the trend and it only exists to serve to remind white people of their past atrocities or black people of their past victories that they can't stop clinging to. More than that, your point is discounting the full amount of black actors depicted as slaves; it is a black actors most common go-to role. Great, let's make another one and beat another dead horse after Roots. Also, notice the acclaim of such movies. Movies like The Help and 12 Years have won award after award. This has given rise to a boom, so to speak, on exploiting black actors to perform as slaves.
Movies about slavery in recent years:
Django Unchained
Lincoln (2012)
Tula (2013)
Savannah (2013)
12 Years a Slave (2013)
Belle (2013)
Movies in 2014 featuring slaves or blacks in a submissive role:
- Carry Me Home(Cuba Gooding Jr movie number 1!)
- The Keeping Room
- Book of Negroes (Cuba Gooding Jr movie number 2!)
- The North Star (another slave movie)
Great! More slave movies! I'm sure there's more too. Cuba wants to be a slave so much he's willing to act as one not once, but two times in a row. Why? Because the only way to get nominated as best actor or best film while as a black person is to play in a slave film. If not that, in a film with a submissive role (maid, butler). It's pretty tiring.
But that's okay, there's not too many slave films anyways, right? It's funny that we have a black president and the only way to get a non-Tyler Perry role today is to be a slave. The 90's were far more relevant and I'm pretty sure that outside of Django on this list and maybe a few others, most of these movies weren't made for black people either.

I assume that post is a joke?

But both those combined made him come off as a self obsessed loony

I'm also surprised Snow Dogs didn't get Cuba the nod.

I liked matthew mcconaughey speech. it wasn't worded the best, but the idea of self improvement and becoming someone you can admire is nice.
