Not a bad throwback song, but like all Pharell songs it sounds like it would be much better if someone else sung it. Straight up karaoke vocals...
-
I wish someone could give me the dancing Jesus touch.
-
Pharrell sucks
Fo'real
-
The fact this man can get radio play and Janelle can't is a sign of culture decline
-
Janelle uses live bands and her music is distinctly groovy with a lot of funk overtones.
-
okay pharrell stan
-
Tightrope and Primetime are pretty much the only Monae songs that had radio potential. She doesn't have a machine behind her and is on the wrong label. I like her I don't think she'll ever be big or even a presence on radio - and she's fine with that.
although I still believe if she was white she'd be everywhere right now.

Disagree, she has a lot of radio friendly songs, especially in an Adele era.
-
Pharrell's record is the antithesis of "doing his own thing". The overwhelming aesthetic is one of desperation and big label imitation. Happy is a success, but it won't carry G I R L any further than Can I have it Like That carried In My Mind.
Good on him for performing at the grammies and appearing in Mastercard commercials tho :heh
-
How does this not have mainstream appeal? It sounds fucking amazing.

I guess mainstream appeal means as vapid as possible.
-
What works for Adele doesn't work for black artists. See: Sharon Jones.
-
Janelle is covered in major magazines, is featured on primetime award shows and music shows, is a covergirl model, etc etc. she's not a superstar, but she's very popular and continues to get bigger and bigger. come on now yall
-
she's featured on award shows but when is she SINGING at award shows?
-
While I can't finish the song, I can see why others love it. It's positive and catchy.

well the grammys for one

Columbia is trying really hard to squeeze happy from a surprise hit song into a calculated hit record. They won't pull it off, because it's a pharrell record, but they've thrown enough money at it, and did it quickly enough that they still got some happy juice left. It will run out and all they'll have left is a cheap pharrell record that no one wants to buy.
-
Yeah they seem pretty desperate to capitalize on the surprise success of the song. A couple units might be moved but the casuals (:smug) that love this tune will discover that the rest of GIRL doesn't sound like that.
-
Pharrel can't sing. That falsetto ugh.
-
No offense but she is not "very popular" at all. She's a niche artist who does well touring but doesn't sell records or chart. Electric Lady is her most popular album and has sold around 75,000 copies; it might hit 100k before the end of the year, especially if it gets some Grammy nods.

Breh it was the #1 song in 15 countries including the US. It's double platinum in the US.
I don't like the song but...it's a hit record.

Relistened to it forgot how bland it is.
-
Janelle is a millionaire, so she's basically living the dream even if she's not as big as other stars.
-
Diddy was gonna make The Electric Lady his new beard till he realized she a clam eater. Poor Cassie :tocry She ain't ever gonna be free.
-
The things I like are deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep
The things everyone else likes are shallooooooooooooooow
pharrell stan :maf

Cassie is probably wearing diapers by now.

I'd sniff those diapers :noah
Such a terrible voice tho. I remember hearing "Me And You" on the radio and I was like :holeup

Probably the least appealing sex song in recent history. I remember a chick in my class saying "hey have you heard that Cassie song? It's about....*whispers* giving head"
I was like :leon
went home, waited patiently for it to play one night on BET. I was half erect when I heard it was about to start, but 30 seconds in my shit went flaccid. :oreilly

i have good memories playing saints row 2 to me & u :obama

Looked up the cassie song, elementary school kids could write better lyrical rhymes :-\

This is basically his whole album, most of the songs are okay but his singing keeps you from really caring. He's not even bad imo, but its just there.

Yeah, I picked up G I R L and Kid Cudi's Journey to Mother Moon to give them a fair shot before I see or don't see them at Coachella next month. I don't like Pharrel's album at ALL. His old N.E.R.D. stuff is cool and his solo album from 2006 is alright, but this album is so plain and boring. There's nothing that sticks out and yeah I really don't care for it. Not gonna bother seeing him live.
Otoh, I like Cudi's new EP/Album a good deal. It's flawed, but the production is really interesting in his Man on the Moon albums and makes them feel fresh and creative. Plus I like his voice. Looking forward to seeing him live.
Now just looking to see how the new Aloe Blacc and Foster the People album turns out this month. Loved the new Broken Bells album (I really like Danger Mouse's production style) and Beck album is still growing on me.

Someone at work has this song as their ringtone.
I hear the chorus 20 times a day. I have no idea if there is anymore to the song, but I don't want to know.

I work in a school, so most people have thier own office cutting down on the noise. But seriously.

I don't hate it, honestly. Classic funk and RnB tropes, just happens to be smeared with pop methodology. I'd rather this sort of music be more popular than shit like Avicii or Imagine Dragons.
-
I don't care about music "tropes." The guy can't sing. Imagine Prince or Michael Jackson singing Get Lucky: it becomes an infinitely better song. Likewise, if Happy was sung by someone like John Legend (who I'm not a fan of but would do great on Happy).
He's very talented but I've always been lukeworm on his stuff. From NERD to The Clipse I thought he was criminally overrated, but it's undeniable that he has tapped into the musical conscious of the world. Of course having a major label provide early radio spins helps. There's a lot of stuff like Happy out there, sung by small soul acts. Aloe Blacc has bubbled up to the mainstream but usually those types of people don't. BTW I hate The Man, that song is bad. But I'm glad Blacc is doing well, he deserves it.

I liked "Bromance", his remix of "Derezzed" and even "Levels" (the first few thousand times I heard it), but the country/house crossover in a lot of Avicii's stuff just doesn't work for me.

How sad do you think Pharrell is that he peaked so early?

I call this the Trent Reznor disorder.

The song opens with Teddy Riley chanting the chorus "All I wanna do is zooma-zoom-zoom-zoom in a poom-poom." Subsequent verses are rapped by Aqil Davidson, Teddy Riley, and Markell Riley. Teddy Riley's verse is notable for being written by his young protégé Pharrell Williams,
Holy shit, never knew that. Such creative lyrical stylings from Pharell. :tophat
