I still prefer real Mexican food though, a lot more subtle and more variety I think.

Nothing has been said about Americanization or authentencity. I don't care if something has been Americanized. I care if something is GOOD. Do you really think pizza for instance, is it in its purest form in America? No! And who cares? Pizza is great! The same goes for things like ramen. Cup ramen is not the same thing as real ramen you'd get at a ramen place. But it is still great.

Tex Mex looks and tastes like crap.

But that is the core of Tex mex. Tex mex mostly IS chain mexican food. Non chain Mexican is usally not Tex Mex. Are there really any non chain Tex mex places? Tex mex is the most popular style of Mexican food in America.

Well that shit is definitely tex mex :gurl there are more authentic things available on the menu there but ... :gurl

I wouldn't call Torchy's tex mex. It's not authentic but it uses proper flank steak instead of ground beef in their tacos. They might also have some crazy shit on top but it's not covered in slightly spicy gravy and melted velveeta so it ain't tex mex.

Just like all our Chinese places are not real Chinese food. And I'll be honest, I'm fine with that. Cause real Chinese food? :holeup I'm good with my tso's kthx. I'm sure real Mexican is delicous, but I order a tortilla with cheese and chicken. That's it. TexMex is designed for picky assholes like me.

I really only like Chevys for their salsa, corn cakes and margaritas. It's overpriced and I'd rather go to my little lunch place where Pepe teases me and shames me into speaking Spanish.

I asked for black beans instead of refried beans, and the dude looked at me like I was crazy. I can get refried beans anywhere, motherfucker. Bland cheese and meat in everything, lettuce and tomato thrown on top like it's a garnish or something. Owned and operated by Mexicans, too, smh. I hate that place, but I have to go because my fiance is 100% cac and has a fit if anything is spicier than black pepper.

My favorite place is called La Costa. You can get the regular old bland shit if you want, but if you dig a bit deeper into the menu you can find the stuff that doesn't taste like hamburger helper in a tortilla. That's where I get my picadillo.

good god cup ramen is like eating styrofoam in dirty water after eating the real thing. the quality gap is fucking staggering and is almost the same damn situation as this tex mex rant you're on.

Pretty sure. But one thing I do with instant ramen is make my own dish. So the Tex Mex comparison is pretty off. You can buy instant ramen and make some damn good food using traditional cooking methods. May not be real ramen or even pho level, but still damn good.

There's lots of little locally-owned restaurants here which I think would probably be classified more as 'Tex-Mex' or Mexican/fusion than straight-up Mexican (the tacos look like the ones Mupepe posted above, usually with some more offbeat ingredients like duck or bulgogi or andouille sausage, usually owned by white people... some of which are actually really good.

I went there once, not really knowing it was a chain... the chips and salsa weren't bad, the food itself was solid but not spectacular, I mean there are much worse chains out there and I'd rather eat there than Chilis or aforementioned Applebees.

If you go to Dallas, and don't stop by a taqueria, and get TEX MEX instead, I will cry. Florida Mexican food is shit. You've got all these Cubans and shit, saying their food is Mexicanos and blargh. Go to a local authentic Mexican taqueria. Order a burrito and two tacos.

In Texas cities, you should be able to find a taqueria like on most city blocks. Just research.

Man, you're insane. South Florida has a few authentic Mexican restaurants run by Mexicans FOB. It's not Southern California levels of good but it's the closest I've found to real Mexican food on this coast. I haven't been to South West Texas so I'm sure it's better there than the Dallas/Austin area.

If they serve huitlacoche (CORN SMUT) then it's a legit place.

Yeah, Central sucks for Mexican and all food besides "American" cuisine. The only exceptions are Cuban in Tampa (which still doesn't hold a candle to Miami) and Bern's in Tampa which is the best steak house on the East Coast outside of NYC/Boston. If you want good food it's all in Miami.

Cheesecake Factory makes some pretty amazing Horchata and Huarache though. Order that with a Tequila Cheesecake (called Tequilaxico in Mexican) and you're good to go. :mynicca

Del Taco's Crunchtada is the best Mexican though:
