Don't know if I can make GB since the Mega64 one ends only an hour before. I'm counting on it but I'll probably be way in the back... just like fucking last year. :goty2

Why did they put two panels so close together when each of them requires 1.5/2 hour lines to get good seats? :goty

Shovel Knight looking fiiiiine. Stuttering Craig stopped by while I was watching people play and he talked to Sean Velasco (the dude in the upper left, founder of Yacht Club.) They talked about how excited they were about each other's projects, Sean in particular was psyched about ScrewAttack being bought, with Craig saying he really wants to have a huge indie push to get games more visibility. Just a pretty awesome moment.

Seems he's a Dvelop.tv bloke, who helped them make their KS vid and would presumably make their documentary on Cult County as a stretch goal (though that doesn't seem like it'll happen...)

Edit- This was totally inaccurate, lol.

Basically just went over some stuff I already knew like IV's, EV's, natures, abilities, breeding, horde training, etc. But there was some excellent stuff in the second half about building a balanced doubles team, which I've struggled with.

The line for this was like 25% kids, 25% normal nerds, and 50% nerds wearing some kind of Poke-paraphernalia.

Also, I don't work for RK. They're just good friends of mine and I'm helping them out at the show. Working a booth is hard work, so I have a new found appreciation and respect for the guys that do it.

In line for The Evil Within. Apparently it's just gameplay footage but you get a free poster, so that's cool. Wish Mikami were here to sign it.

They're letting in 40 people at a time but it must be a lengthy amount of footage since I haven't moved in the 20 minutes I've been in line... Should definitely be worth it.

Spent most of today just looking at as many indie games as possible. Played about half of the ones I saw.

Post by: fistfulofmetal on April 13, 2014, 10:47:02 PM
The Royal Rumble panel was incredible. And I rounded Sunday out by watching Rich Gallup and Vinnie (GB) talk about being producers. Was pretty rad.

I didn't spend as much money this year which was a bit disappointing for me. The stuff wasn't all that interesting, really. I bought one of those Portal Turret plushies, two posters (One, the rug print from The Shining (fuck off Raban), and LV 426 from Alien). Some magnetic putty, some more bucky balls, a bunch of shirts, a rad Skyrim keychain.

There was one booth selling a replica Mass Effect Avenger rifle... I asked how much it was. SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS. YEAH RIGHT BRO.

I didn't play that many indie games, mostly because they didn't really interest me this year round. And the big AAA stuff wasn't interesting enough to warrant sitting in line. I sat in line for Magic The Gathering on Friday because I wanted to get my picture taken but they said they'd put them on FB... haven't seen em yet. I also think this years setup wasn't as conducive to SEEING rad shit. Last year it felt like the show floor was designed to funnel you to a bunch of cool games. This year it felt a lot more randomly spread out so I had to go searching for stuff. I didn't get to discover as much stuff unfortunately.

But I GOT TO TRY THE LEGIT OCULUS RIFT DEMO. So it's Saturday right? I'm there all day because of the Giantbomb panel at 9pm. My buddy who came with me said he would probably go too. So we had split up cuz he wanted to see the table top stuff (which I dont care about) and then go to the Pin Trading panel (which I don't give a shit about). He goes and does his thing and I do my own thing and we were gonna meetup after and wait for GB. Instead he sends me a text after the Pin Trading panel that he's not staying and says he's getting on the shuttle back to the hotel. Fuckin totally bails on me to be there alone on the show floor for another 4 hours.

I'm pissed and I basically think, fuck it i'll just get on the next shuttle then drive back to the convention for the panel. I'm literally ON MY WAY to the exit when I walk by the Oculus Rift booth. Now this booth has been literally jammed up since DAY ONE. I've tried SO MANY times to get in and every time the line is capped. I'm walking by the booth on SATURDAY at 5:50PM (10 minutes before the show floor closes) and I see the line for their booth is EMPTY. I'm thinking "What?! No way. There has to be something WRONG here right?" So I saunter up to the front of the line with a small group and the chick standing there looks at her watch and says "Hmmm we can probably get another group going" and lets us on in.

Essentially I was the last to demo the Rift on Saturday before they closed the floor.

That was enough to motivate me to stay so I grabbed my phone and found an outlet and charged that sucker until 7 wherein I made my way to Albatross and met up with Andrex and Slime. The line was CRAZY! Originally I walked up and there was a line already there for the panel at 7pm and the enforcer told me to wait over to the side for the GB panel and they would start lining up after. Turns out that wasn't correct at all! The line for the GB panel was already forming down at the other end of the hall. In fact, the PRE line for the GB panel was BIGGER than the line for the panel that was about to start! Crazy.

SO yeah, their panel was amazing. Then on Sunday I saw the Royal Rumble panel with Harmonix duders, GB duders, a bunch of other duders. God that might have been just as good. The amount of wrestling fuckery was beyond insane. So many chants being thrown out... If you haven't seen that track down the twitch Stream.

Now, Boston. One thing I wanted to do this year was actually leave my hotel. Unfortunately my buddy who I went with is a wet blanket and didn't want to do anything. The first day I asked where we were gonna go to eat. (I'm not one to go somewhere by myself, especially in a foreign place). I REALLY wanted to go to this place called Kingston Station but this dude refused because he didn't have a nice button down. I brought a nice shirt with me JUST IN CASE. I mean, always be prepared right? We eventually settled on this decent mexican restaurant called Fajitas & Ritas. It was ok. He seemed to think it was great. Shrug.

On the walk back to the hotel tho we found this really awesome coffee shop called Boston Commons and they have the most delicious hot chocolate I've ever had (I don't drink coffee). I went there 3 times over the weekend. Great place. Would recommend totally.

So overall PAX was still great. I wasn't as awestruck as I was last year but I had a lot of fun. Finally met some internet people. Finally saw Oculus. Finally walked around the streets of a legit city city. Good trip overall.

Next year I am not fucking driving again. Fuck that. I'm flying.

I talked so goddamn much at the convention and then after the show hanging out that I'm losing my voice. I also think I got sick the second day so I'm going to be bathing in hand sanitizer when I get back from the convention (currently on the subway as I type this). I'm flying back home tomorrow and again on Wednesday for an interview  so I'll probably just sleep a full 24 hours to recuperate, rofl.

Day 3 Pics

The first two days of PAX were dedicated to meeting up with friends and going to panels. I decided Sunday was going to be all about playing (mostly indie) games on the expo floor.

This game, Pixel Noir, had a neat retro style and somewhat-intuitive touchscreen controls. It was basically a point-and-click adventure game in the, you guessed it, film noir genre.

I'm still not exactly sure what this was.

This game, Tales of Mythica, seemed pretty neat. It had a pretty good looking demo (built in UDK, I think?) The Kickstarter is currently ongoing and the URL is here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ggngamestudios/tales-of-mythica-assertion

This game was apparently super successful on KS? Seemed popular with kids.

In general, I like games that explain everything they're about in their name.

Didn't get to see much of this one other than it had a neat retro graphical style that caught my eye.

DUET is absolutely amazing. AMAZING. It's just geometric primitives but it's great. Look it up.

Deadrock Divide seemed interesting. Kind of a sci-fi roguelike I guess? I thought it was multiplayer at first but that isn't the case.

I liked this poster.

Played this game, Wayward Souls. Good touchscreen controls. Took me a bit to grok but they were super intuitive after that. Basically an adventure/fantasy/RPG-y type deal in a retro style (this is a theme in the indie games I'm interested in...) with multiple playable characters that have unique skillets/etc.

After having lunch with my friend Matt he showed me the way to the Mega64 booth, and they were ALL there.

Derrick and I had a weird eye/eyebrow moment and it was totally hilarious. They were basically going 100% (don't let this pic fool you) so I can't imagine how tired they were.

Ended up buying two DVD's (and a bonus con-exclusive DVD with skits they can't put online) and got a free Kutaragi's Way mini-poster. Neat.

RENEGADE MOTHAFUCKIN KID

BACK THEIR GAME MOTHAFUCKAS! (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2029149553/cult-county-by-renegade-kid)

The gaming museum arcade thing was pretty neat. No games there I'd play but the strobes and whatnot were cool. Kind of a hole in the wall actually, pretty out of the way so it kind of felt like a secret hangout haha.

The handheld lounge. Went there to challenge some "gym leaders" to Pokemon but most of them were MIA so I left.

Wish I had transferred my MH3U save to my 3DS before coming. :( And that my 3DS didn't have a busted L button. :-\

Also wish Capcom had fucking SHOWED UP and had a dedicated MH mini-booth like last year. :maf

Pixel was a neat indie game I played. Basically you play as a pixel trying to turn other pixels into white (dead) pixels. It's a platform-puzzler where you can reverse gravity, and fall through certain platforms if you're the same color.

A Druid's Duel was probably my favorite indie game I played that I didn't know of before PAX. It's a turn-based strategy with pretty simple controls but some neat ideas about territory control and individual unit powers. Plus they can all turn into animals.

Was half-tempted to buy a PSVita TV here.

NiGHTS! And it comes with a controller? Too bad I won't ever own a Saturn.

In line for The Evil Within! This pic came out appropriately dark, lol.

Line was kinda long but they let people in 40 at a time since we'd basically be watching someone else play and not playing ourselves.

That touchscreen kiosk and mounted camera had a pretty cool gimmick, it could take your pictures and turn it into a version of the game's boxart. I did it and it came out fantastic.

About to watch the two demo areas get played!

OMFG 17 BIT!!!

#PAXSwag

The Evil Within gave out a poster to everyone who watched the demo, and after that I nabbed a cool looking 17bit shirt.

Dyscourse momentarily captured my eye. Seemed like an adventure game with quirky humor.

Chasm was a pretty awesome-looking retro platform/adventure-y game. Didn't get to play it but I'll keep an ear out in the future.

Slime led me to the PS Store booth. I guess Sony was here? Kinda.

PAX After Show:

I was given an Exhibitor's badge by Renegade Kid so I could stay on the floor after the show had ended. :bow2

Basically just helped them pack up.

I was surprised how sturdy the chairs were considering they were actually just particle boards screwed together, haha.

Afterwards, we got an awesome group photo taken and Fedexed the boxes. Then Slime and I went to their hotel's restaurant but the Dvelop.tv guy thought it was too expensive so we went and got pizza at Salvatore's down the street (never knew where they were, but knew they had good food since they cater lunch for my company sometimes.)

However, we ended up going back to the hotel restaurant for drinks. Two Gaijin Games guys (Dant and Jason) showed up and an already-great night got even better. Lots of funny PAX anecdotes and developer stories.

All in all, this might have been my favorite PAX. Like fistful mentioned, after the first year you're not seeing stars in your eyes and "ooh-ing and aah-ing" as much, but in terms of having fun and accomplishing what I wanted to do, this year was a slam dunk. Just wish Capcom had been here, a MH Lounge is much more necessary than a "Diversity Lounge."

Chasm (http://www.chasmgame.com/) will be for Windows, Mac, Linux. Kind of excited about it.

Barely looked at Dyscourse (http://dyscourse.com/) for more than a couple minutes but it seems to be PC/Mac/Linux via Steam.

Most of the others I think were PC/iOS/Android.

Smell was totally okay this time. I think they converted a bunch of Women's bathrooms to Men's because I'd walk in and there would be rows and rows of stalls

Eh. They did indeed convert some bathrooms on the first floor, which seemed to cause a minor stir according to my friend, but it was kind of super convenient.

Otherwise there were some areas that were just  :-X Feet smell was the most prevalent and fetid.

Disclaimer: aside from my panel I was on the show floor the entire time. Now that I think about it, the closed-in rooms might have had some funk in spades.

Five minutes? Try an hour and a half, on the first day. Jake sleeps. A lot.

Yeah, $23 was kind of a weird price. "Why do I need three extra dollars?" Glad you dropped it cause I just had twenties on me, lol.

One of you should have had Square or something though, for reals.

Hmm, my phone was fine, aside from weird slowness while I was waiting in line for The Evil Within. Some other peeps on the other side (TCG/board games) were using it. (Or was it Paypal's knockoff? It was a triangle.)

Thanks for the pictures andrex

I'm a very piccy person. Thankfully my phone camera isn't absolute shit this year. Night and day compared to two years ago. (http://www.thebore.com/forum/index.php?topic=38117.0)

I'm surprised how few people in your pictures were in costumes, aren't those usually pretty prevalent at conventions like that?
Title: Re: PAX East 2014
Post by: Tasty on April 14, 2014, 11:11:08 PM
Yeah, anecdotally there seemed to be waaayyy fewer cosplayers. Don't know why. Maybe the economy? Lol.

I'm glad cause while the big ass costumes can be kind of neat they're absolutely infuriating to try and walk past or wait in line with.

Lots of people in stupid/"ironic" hats though.

True. But that didn't stop people before...

If I had my way I'd ban all cosplay and turn PAX East into an indie-only megafest. <_<

Half of PAX East was indie this year, not even exaggerating.

I wouldn't want an indie only show because there would be no sponges to soak up most of the crowd. The more distinguished mentally-challenged fellows Microsoft can pull in to play Titanfall means the better chance I have of checking out all the indie games I can.

We did good after dropping the price of the tshirts to twenty bucks, that looks to be the sweet spot.

Yeah $23 was a weird price but I BOUGHT IT ANYWAYS.
