Also, protip: Leave old MMO expectations and tendencies at the door. It's still mostly a themeparky MMO, but it's not a stat race, bimodal design. World is designed to be explored and replayed at max level. For example, max level is 80, but the toughest World Boss is in a level 50 zone and hands out level 80 rewards.

Also, use the gear button in inventory to "Deposit All Collectibles". It's an awesome QoL feature. It sends all your crafting materials that you've gathered directly into your bank's storage and they stack to 250 by default.

From what I can tell, no. The starting human and norm levels were filled with people doing the events to grind. It's some of the middle level zones that had problems.

They introduced megaserver tech last month that populates any leveling zone with players from other servers when player count is low. Basically, you should have others to play with where ever you go in the game.

Otherwise, server populations are good and the game is very active with players. The Dynamic Event system helps with this since it naturally converges players together into the same area. Here is Miktar on GAF's screenshot of a world boss event today in a level 15 area:

Well you can do smaller stuff as well. World Bosses will draw a huge crowd though.

People scared of others in their Massivley Multiplayer game. So sad.

If you're basing your opinion off of Yanger or anything of the like, you're taking a fat L. It's the equivalent to trusting the view on Raiding from someone who has never downed a raid boss. A whole lotta L2P, but it's a L2P specific to MMO players who don't realize how limited their old systems had been.

I think I told you a long time ago that players struggle with GW2 because they approach it according to framework of a traditional holy trinity MMO like WoW. When that approach doesn't work and they get their asses handed to them, they shout chaos and zerg without ever bothering to learn a new system. Hint" If the company is saying they're throwing out the old system, then it probably means you need to learn a new system. I didn't have any big problem adapting and understanding GW2's combat, but then I already realized I would have to learn new things. I don't engage games at shallow levels either, so I push myself constantly. I also didn't grow up playing only MMOs and standand fare RPGs. People coming from TF2 or Zelda seem to adapt better to the game and struggle less with the concepts. People who have had tab-target MMOs basically do half of their work in the background while using a Macro button while following Deadly Boss Mod instructions tend to struggle.

Nearly everyone in that thread frames the discussion within Holy Trinity MMO 2.0ish concepts. Not old sandboxy stuff like SWG or UO, or even things like Asheron's Call. And certainly not within the framework of GW2. The most telling thing about that debate is that both pro and con arguments focus on instanced PVE dungeons. Doing so makes sense with WoW. Blizzard stats all their endgame gear around the three trinity roles. Your talent trees are based upon the three trinity roles. So how you build your character is based upon the trinity. Now the trinity doesn't help you with leveling content much, and it's not fully there in PVP, but the trinity is everything to instanced PVE encounters. So t's natural to judge combat and group combat based upon instanced PVE encounters when the game puts so much attention upon those things.

But GW2 doesn't do that. There's many, many ways to trait your character and build your character. There's many Rune sets and Stat combos for every class in the game. Not all of them are good ideas or really viable, but there's not much restriction. The game doesn't say "GO DO DUNGEON BUILD". The content updates aren't all "the next dungeon". Instead, they are a mix of Open World, PVP, WvWvW, and instanced content. And I think if you really looked at their focus, much of it is on open world content for PVE. There's all this interesting PVE stuff that the game has done with Invasions, the Tower of Nightmare, Super Adventure Box, Bazaar of the Four Winds, and Lion's Arch rescue... that nobody is discussing because it doesn't fall under the holy trinity raid paradigm.

There's one note on complaints of chaotic: There's also the fog of war the game has in large scale fights. You can learn it and parse it. I think they could still improve certain boss attack animations, but they have actually improved their tell system and aoe telegraphs. The main issue is the massive amount of skill effects going off is a lot to process. It's a skill check of sorts. The game also uses spatial reasoning and terrain more than MMO-centric players are used to and that tends to give them problems.

It is very chaotic at first, but so will be any new experience you haven't been guided through. The game doesn't guide you through it though. I like that personally. GW2 is rather anti-hand-holding. It needs some tutorials on how combo fields work and how boons and beneficial effects are shared, but it doesn't need more hand holding. Basically, you do an intro sequence and then are plopped into the world without a quest (!) NPC, without a quest arrow, and instead you get an open world designed to be explored.

But the "focus on early dungeon content" issue is the general issue that everyone in that thread is having. I bring a healing Ele to the Guild Mission Karka Rush and to Guild Rushes. Why? Because it helps the encounter. I brought it to Nightmare Tower and it helped. I suggested for Eles to run Water and drop Water fields when I would run Tower climbs. This is overlooked because people turn their brain off in the open world because they turned their brain off while leveling in LOTRO or WoW or whatever. You can't process the combat when you're ignoring the majority of its use.

it's actually super fucking simple. the enemy and boss mechanics need to be way more complex than they are currently.

In the "raid" videos I've watched a lot of it boils down to kiting when the boss randomly decides to attack you, and healing yourself after getting 3-5 shot.

I'm someone who doesn't care about dps and loves tanking, and would like to see a game that keeps the holy trinity but revamps it. No tank enjoys standing still pressing 2-4 buttons every few seconds, yet that's what tanking is in many WoW fights for instance. I loved the fights that demanded multitasking, good timing, rewarded solid decision making, etc. I'd love to see an MMO or ARPG that gave you broad versatility with regards to tanking. Should you keep the boss' attention or should you focus on adds, should you fight the boss in x area where you get defense buffs or y area where you get attack buffs. This would require boss' that do less single target damage most likely, so for instance maybe a DPS could take over tanking as I ran off to achieve some other part of the fight, all while knowing I had about x time before the DPS would be overwhelmed.

Variety, basically.

They do. The most interesting mechanic they've done is probably still Cliffside fractal, and that doesn't involve the boss as much as the whole level.

PD: It's tough to continually tank a boss in GW2 since there's no "threat" or "taunt" skills. I have run Guardian builds that face-tanked some Champion mobs. It required laying down protection/heal fields, using a dodge here and there, and using a block skill here and there. This is all with high armor. You can sit in the middle of regular mobs with a build like this, doing similar reactionary and pro-active things.

But there isn't "go tank this" situations. The fights will ask you to mitigate or deal with incoming damage, and you can also prevent damage to others with terrain control skills and CCs. You can even do things where if someone is getting projectiles shot at them, you can throw up a block skill and stand in the projectile's path, or you can throw up a reflect/deflect skill to mitigate it. You can also physically pull a mob to you with certain skills.

So Dungeon bosses are not tanked but dealt with. This is because too much of the outgoing damage is big, large hits that down players if fully taken. I think this a weakness of the game, and if you had more continuous, lighter damage, then you'd see more of the aspects of the combat that you see in other parts of the game. World Bosses are never 'tanked'. The tough ones have roles for multiple large groups of people that mostly don't revolve around the trinity concept. The closest thing to tanking was one of the mini-bosses in the Marionette fight that required a player tank it so everyone else could hit it from behind (was invulnerable to damage from the front).

So there are no tanks, but there's tanky builds that can take hits. There's nothing that can take an giant crab rolling over them and remain standing.

It's more Diablo or PSO like than EQ/WoW like. This is especially so in the large number fights where waves of enemies appear. However, the game has its own feel to it due to the systems and the importance of 3d space.

Yeah I recommend adventuring around and such. Most of my favorite moments are when I just randomly wander into something cool. Be it a mini dungeon, boss or little known event.
