Quote
Any new film containing obscene language won't be granted a distribution certificate, so there's no chance of seeing it at the movie theater.

And copies of books, CDs or films containing swearing can only be distributed in a sealed package labeled "Contains obscene language," a Kremlin statement said.

According to the Kremlin, the legislation "bans the use of obscene language when ensuring the rights of Russian citizens to the use of the state language, and protecting and developing language culture."

Gotta love how it's protecting the rights of russian citizens to use the state language. Like how banning gays protects my right to be straight.

A law passed to appease the church that will be selectively employed against any potential opposition. Doubt they'll be burning Pushkin's books any time soon.

edit: the CNN article makes it sound like swearing in general is banned, which is incorrect. In Russia there is a slang called mat which is a sort of prison/street slang. It's complex as slang tends to be, but essentially what's banned is four words (and their derivatives): khuy (“cock”), pizda (“cunt”), ebat’ (“to fuck”), and blyad (“whore”). Mat was banned in Soviet times as well. Lots of writers now considered greats have used mat.

They said it doesn't apply to already created works, but yeah.
