Quote
As YouTube prepares to roll out an ad-free streaming music service, the Financial Times is reporting that it will block videos from indie artists who don't sign up for this new offering. According to the story, YouTube has signed deals with the major labels, and is explicitly threatening to block artists from using the entire YouTube platform, free or paid, if they do not agree to the terms of the new streaming service.

The FT quotes Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s head of content and business operations, confirming that the service plans to block videos from any artists or labels who have not signed on to its new paid service, "to ensure that all content on the platform is governed by its new contractual terms."

The Guardian points out that this would affect a number of big names artists, potentially eliminating names like Jack White, Adele, and The Arctic Monkeys from YouTube. A YouTube spokesman told The Verge, "Our goal is to continue making YouTube an amazing music experience, both as a global platform for fans and artists to connect, and as a revenue source for the music industry. We’re adding subscription-based features for music on YouTube with this in mind -- to bring our music partners new revenue streams in addition to the hundreds of millions of dollars YouTube already generates for them each year. We are excited that hundreds of major and independent labels are already partnering with us."

A source familiar with the situation confirmed to The Verge that most of the details in the FT story were accurate. YouTube does not want to launch a paid service and then be forced to show some videos in ad-supported mode, or offer users the ability to take videos offline, but not be able to offer that for big names like Adele or Jack White. It is going to begin blocking artists whose labels have not signed on to its new licensing terms in the countries where those deals apply, starting in a few days, although the paid service is not expected to roll out that soon.

CAN SOMEONE PLEAAE MAKE A VIABLE YOUTUBE ALTERNATIVE.

Wouldn't that be Vimeo? Seems like a good alternative to Youtube, only problem is that Youtube is so massively popular that it's pretty much the default place to watch videos.

jewtube also just has a wealth of e-history; tons of content you simply can't find anywhere else or will take time to move. it's like facebook in that sense. If it wants to get replaced you'll need a new, disruptive type site that does what it does but different AND better.

This too. Sure, people could try to take a stand and exclusively use a site like Vimeo over Youtube, but ultimatately they'd be depriving themselves of a fuckton of content. And creators would be sharing with an exponentially smaller audience. Guess we're fucked.  :yeshrug

Vimeo's more of an artist's site. It's doing its own thing pretty well, but that means it's pretty niche-y.

I doubt any site will be able to challenge YouTube for general video hosting.

On the other, no more ads on music videos and finally offline videos. :leon

This seemed like a good place to ask without making a new thread.

Does anyone else have problems with The Bore in Chrome? I swear to fuck the page crashes all the fuck time. Not one problem with Firefox. I thought it might be an extension problem but it does the same thing with all extensions disabled.

http://www.theverge.com/2014/6/20/5827554/indie-labels-youtube-paid-streaming-service

Quote
Believe Digital, an independent label based mostly in Europe, said that it agreed to the terms in February of 2014. Critically, Believe says it was a good deal. "The new contract includes a significant increase of the revenue share rate on user-generated content for sound recording. This type of use is currently the largest source of revenues from YouTube."

Believe's memo says that it researched the rates YouTube was offering and found they were on par with those offered by services like Spotify, Deezer, and Rdio. Critically, it was also the same deal YouTube gave the big players.

The setting was added last October but hidden from users. There's a good chance it will launch alongside this new service.

i don't know if the world's ready for YouSperg

I've toyed for years with ideas for various streaming UI's. I should just go ahead and do it...

Maybe then Google will buy me and my entire life won't be a waste. (http://i.imgur.com/z7F4jYO.png)

Just make the bittorrent of video streaming.

People use an HTML5 app or download a program, and can then upload whatever they want. It'll look like youtube more or less in that people can have channels and whatnot, but instead of streaming things you're doing a stream-download peer-2-peer thing like popcorn time does - which means that server costs will be kept at a minimum.

You're welcome.

Still would like to see official YT support though.

I'll do some scouting in Back Bay then, not really a place I frequent much.

I do have a couple favorites near the Common, though.

In short: before, you had two options:

1. Post your video and monetize it via YouTube's partner program with a bit of ad revenue.
2. Post your video and don't monetize it.

And now you'll have these two options:

1. Post your video and monetize it via YouTube's partner program with a bit of ad revenue and some subscription revenue
2. Post your video and don't monetize it.

Hard to know where to fall on this thing until the streaming service rolls out.

Surely they won't stop me from being able to listen to individual songs on youtube for free?  It sounds like this new thing will be an additional option to compete with the Spotifys of the world.
