Title: The Bore Decides: What was the whitest sitcom of the 90s? (VICTOIRE)
Post by: Kara on July 08, 2014, 02:44:32 AM
Here at The Bore, a nexus of hardcore haters, enthusiast Lulu self-published press, and video game industry forum posters and video game industry forum exiles, we decide the real issues of the day through facts and evidence, as presented within the confines of civil, inclusive discourse.

Today we're going to tackle one of the most pressing issues of our times: just what was the whitest sitcom of the 1990s?

What's a white sitcom you ask? I'll let Pickles take it away.

[White sitcoms are] the pinnacle of rich white entertainment. Joyless, derivative, utterly without meaning or merit, yet somehow on the air for seven consecutive years.

Phase 1, which is the phase we're currently in, is the nomination phase. Be sure to list some white-ass sitcoms from the 1990s. I'll close the nomination phase on Wednesday or Thursday, depending on how popular or spirited the discussion gets. After that I'm going to randomly seed the shows and put up brackets for y'all to vote on.

I would love 64 nominations so that we can do a proper March Madness thing, but I don't think we'll be able to do that. Let's shoot for 24-32 before the voting gets going, though, that's a manageable goal.

BTW, if you nominate something stupid (e.g. "What about Family Matters a-yuck?") I'm gonna discount anything else you suggest itt and any votes you cast in later rounds (http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/dubiousquotes/a/stalin_quote.htm). (http://i.imgur.com/yxHP3Zg.gif) (You get a mulligan octopushover.  :))

(If you wanted a democracy, you shouldn't have let the resident tankie run this thing. :ufup)

The actual explicit rules:
-No animated programs.
-The show must have run for at least 2 complete seasons, one of which must have aired between 1/1/1990 and 12/31/1999.
-The show must have been an actual sitcom and not a hybrid program (e.g. comedy-drama). If I go to Wikipedia and sitcom isn't in the opening paragraph, it's not a sitcom.

How much weight are we putting on like one token black guy who's either an endless source of the good snarky jokes or the wise learned hand? Veronica's Closet and Sports Night have those for example.

I was going to list Becker despite Jake, but I remember a lot of his patients and the outside world as being more realistically depicted even if his circle of "friends" was always kinda absurd for the Bronx especially as it went on.

Saw the thread title and thought "Wings better be on there."  Find out it's the show that inspired the thread.  Excellent.

If you do a tournament, a bracket should be reserved for Thursday night NBC shows: Friends and the parade of mediocrities that got the 8:30 and 9:30 hammock slots.

Waiting for someone to derail the thread by nominating Seinfeld.  :shh

I think thats north american racism no?

Europeans consider Hispanics to be white and we don't have any special words for them.

Just like the Spanish are white etc.

Or are you talking about some reverse racism where I feel the need to put him in the white box or something?

I read the OP, at about 10am, started writing a post, got busy and only submitted it at 12pm. Things got jumbled in the wait. That's the boring story. I have no idea why you take my reply seriously when my initial post was obviously humorous in tone. I didnt feel like typing that out while busy at work.

Post by: Cerveza mas fina on July 08, 2014, 11:46:50 AM
The smelly cat video is not funny if you haven't watched Friends.

Quote
‘The key thing about Friends is that it’s about people working out how they are going to live their lives – what kind of relationship are they going to have, what kind of job, the difficulties of settling down,’ says Brett Mills, senior lecturer in film and television studies at the University of East Anglia (who currently has a student doing a PhD on the representation of sexuality in Friends). ‘You’re engaged in all those questions about escaping from your family, becoming an adult and working out what you want to be.’

Quote
The other key aspect was, of course, the group dynamic. Before Friends, sitcoms tended to focus on family life, with parents being the central characters. The message that our friends count more than family when we’re young adults is still a powerful one.

Quote
‘There isn’t one magic ingredient with Friends – it’s a combination of all sorts of things,’ she adds. ‘It’s aspirational but not exclusive. It’s about friendship. The women were funny in it, and beautiful, and I don’t know how much we’d seen of that before then.’

It was pretty white, but doesn't meet the qualification of "joyless, derivative, utterly without meaning or merit". It did have one somewhat prominent black character...Penny or something like that. She was Larry's assistant.

checking wikipedia

ok.  all I remembered about that show were the white women with shoulder pads and big hair.

My reading and ctrl+f skillz both slipping.

What's the ruling on Saved by the Bell?  Lark Voorhies, sure, but depending how we quantify whiteness it'd score pretty high IMO.

It can be, but the whitest shows are the ones with all white casts and people who are non-white may struggle relating to. it's odd but it helps change the perception of the show even if it's just one or two minority characters. Not always, but it helps.

NewsRadio seems like a pretty big missing piece of the puzzle right now. Kind of like Seinfeld where it's not a show about white people problems and it's not at all unaware...but at the end of the day, who watched it almost exclusively? White dudes. When I get a chance I'll comb over the current suggestions for more.

Going back to watching old favorite sitcoms, episodes, or scenes is always interesting. It's one of the quickest ways to gauge how far you've come as far as your choice of humor goes. As far as I can tell it's been: laugh with the laugh track > laugh at slapstick/animated humor > laugh because your English is finally good enough to understand rudimentary jokes >  laugh because you finally have a grasp of subtext and innuendo > laugh because you find the writing genuinely good and clever.

When this thread was created I went back to watch this scene. I remember gasping for air and almost peeing myself when it aired. Starts at 5:00.

also don't forget, zack is 1/16th native or something

that was such a good episode

It was. :tocry

I will defer to the people on Saved by the Bell, I feel like it was pretty white and its minority cast members' identities as minorities were not terribly relevant to the show (Running Zack episode aside). Kelly being Polish seemed like a bigger deal than Slater's or Lisa's identities to me, as an example, and really all that was was the old WASP "ha-ha look at the Pollack with an eye chart for a last name " schtick.

At least there were semi-diverse casts in stuff like power rangers, All That, and Captain Planet. Funnily, these were the more popular shows. Along with things like X-men where half the characters were blue. Thinking on it, this could be a big reason why those shows were as popular as they were, because a lot of people had someone to relate to watching them.

But the popular adult shows mentioned in this thread rarely embraced this. Just odd.

Also the "villains" on Captain Planet who were just hardworking businessmen with really strange fetishes or horrible backgrounds who needed help, while the Planeteers were a bunch of moralizing kids kidnapped and brainwashed into supporting an eco-terrorist.

"Captain Planet" was a collective hallucination as they were setting bombs destroying property and killing workers.

So why isnt Seinfeld not included in any of your lists?  Sure it is funny at times but all the shows are a train wreck of some kind.  As the conclusion of the shows proved.

This thread is on the front page of google results for "whitest sitcom," so you can't act like this isn't a real accomplishment.

Plus I bet there's a ~10% chance the thread gets bumped in the next five years by a very disappointed Stormfront poster who was simply trying to find some white-positive entertainment for the family.

Seinfeld vs. Will and Grace... man. I mean, Seinfeld should in theory just run away with this entire contest, but that's a good match-up right there.

Will and Grace had Taye Diggs as a legit love interest in the later seasons, along with a significant, fleshed out supporting character who was Salvadorian (even if they made her a maid). I'm voting Seinfeld.

Real talk though I watched This is Spinal Tap last week; 25 year old Fran Drescher  :noah

Because this round is susceptible to voter fraud (it's just open voting), I felt that having the results be visible only to me during voting was a check against ballot stuffing since you have no idea what contests are even close.

e: In the rounds that count I'm going to actually have assigned voter numbers or something.

There are no valid ballots because they all rank more than one choice as the most-preferred choice.

Voters can only mark one choice for this question, and there is no majority, so there is not enough information to identify the most popular choice (or the least popular choice).

grace under fire wasn't idealistic enough to truly be white entertainment. I mean roseanne is probably the caciest of them all but that was too much real shit. us cacs need aspirational entertainment devoid of the daily struggle to survive.

Seinfeld ended with all the white people being dragged into court for being terrible and then tossed in jail.

I had my husband help me pick for this round. He convinced me to go with Home Improvement over Full House.

His reasoning was that its a house full of random family and friends living there, and the elders all just watch over the kids. He said that immediately knocks them out of the running based on this non-cactivity.
Title: Re: The Bore Decides: What was the whitest sitcom of the 90s? (Elite 8 voting)

yeah ima be honest, full house is objectively the whitest, no question. but if reiser and co managed to make it to the finals it's possible there could be a debate, since only one of those two shows actually makes me suck my teeth in with irritation, the criterion which has been the undercurrent in all my voting beyond simple melanin inspection.

oscar's case convinced me to put them over the otherwise omnipresent shittiness of friends, but i think all it would take is a single ross gif to make me regret my decision.

Frasier struck this amazing balance between educated humor and pandering to the lowest common denominator. When it was bad, it was pretty much just a Chuck Lorre show with an MA from a liberal arts college. From the episode where Fraiser gets nominated for an award:
Quote
Frasier: You know, I've never really won anything before. Although back in prep school, the Existentialist Club once named me "Most Likely To Be."
If you're a writer, the only reason you put that in there is because you're an asshole.

Not going to lie, you guys have done remarkably well here. Mad about You, Friends and Full House are, without a doubt, the whitest shows in existence. Mad about You and Friends take place in NYC and there are never any minorities, like, at all. Frasier took place in Seattle in the 90s...pretty heavily white populated, so there was an excuse there. Seinfeld featured a minority as one of the four and always had black and Latino guest stars. Friends had like, none and they lived in NYC. Mad about You, same shit, though most of that show revolved around two people in their own house.

I think Full House edges out Friends though. 87 regular cast members and none of them with even a tan.

Full House was all white in San Francisco as well. Friends did have Lauren Tom and Aisha Tyler in guest roles but that's about as diverse as it got.

I think the final 8 is pretty awesome except for Cybil making it through an easy bracket. Really Mad About You should win, it's everything perfect about 90s white sitcoms.

All I watched on TV was sitcoms and cartoons, it's not that tough since I didn't have a life.

Same here. Not sure what started me but I had this unhealthy desire to watch any 90s sitcom that would come on TV when I was in high school or university since I had a lot of free time. I would watch anything once, even shit like Madman of the People or Union Square. Some things like Pearl or Jesse I couldn't handle for more than one episode though.

My favourite was probably M.U.S.C.L.E., which was one of the first shows on the WB. It was a whodunit sitcom set in a gym, and had some awesome people in it (like Michael Boatman and Alan Ruck), and there was an episode that Adam West guest starred. I can never find it anywhere, besides some promo clip on YouTube :'( I think it only lasted 6 episodes.

I'm just saying, before things got beamed from space onto your iDroid phones, we had to watch TV to be entertained. Shows were shit, but it was either that or like, read or something. Full House would never ever be remembered if the internets were around back in those days, I tell you what.

Caught a rerun of friends late last night.

Jennifer Anniston still getting the job after mistakenly believing she was sexually harassed by the interviewer, probably got it over better qualified minorities. The privilege dripping off each scene.

Thinking it over Friends should definitely win this.  Full House at least had the family/kids element going for it that could at least make it a bit more universal.  Friends was about being white and nothing more.

Sex and the City over Full House maybe. One of the commune is watching that atm and it is gal darn white.

Sex in the City vs. Blossom. Blossom to take it all in a Very Special Episode of Blossom.

This is a worthy final 4, although the absence of Seinfeld still grates.

i mean obviously there's levels to this shit but at this point the finale only makes sense if we get to evaluate the names "kimmy gibler" and "chandler bing" against each other.

then again then there's also "six lemeure" and i assume something at the same level on the other show.

I was hoping Mad About You would win.  So I nominate Friends.  Why?

1) David Schwimmer is a mopey, obnoxious character.  He's also a Jew.
2) Everyone on that show talked like a Valley Girl.  Most people these days talk like a Valley Girl and Friends was one of the big trojan horses for that:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-LArv-sEQU

3) They had U2 songs playing in the background sometimes.  U2 was the band CACs go to in order to feel "inspired" in the 90s until even shittier bands like Train and Nickelback took over in the 2000s.
4) They had a scene where some of the characters sang "Baby Got Back" which was a favorite of lame CACs in the 2000s.
5) Quirkiness for the sake of quirkiness.  Nobody else has time for that shit other than affluent NYC whites.

I've sadly seen most of it because of a lady friend. I remember the ladies doing exactly two black guys. I don't remember any other ethnicity but I didn't pay huge attention or see every episode in the middle of the series.

One was a sports doctor who got dumped because the one lesbian IRL realized she loved some other dude, so he got all angry and just disappeared from the show randomly. Then the other one Valeris is bangin and his sister gets all angry with him and he's all afraid of his sister and they all call him a pussy because he can't stand up to his sister.

Until the last seasons whoever Valeris was bangin was only around for an episode or two.

I'm sad to see Seinfeld go too, but let's be honest, a total lack of self-awareness re: your own privilege is a huge part of being The Ultimate Whitey. Seinfeld's ability to understand its characters are actually sociopathic assholes is what ultimately disqualifies it from taking the crown.

Watching an episode of Full House as I type.

John Stamos getting bailed out of jail and having his charges dropped just because it's his wedding, him and his fiance getting a free ride by an ironically all black chorus bus just because Lori Laughlin's on TV (and probably white). The black chorus is probably gonna perform to close this out, so I dunno. On one hand, that's probably more black people in one scene than Friends had ever had, on the other...  :yeshrug

CACNESS VS BLACKNESS

Blossom

Cacness:
Whoa
Large percentage of minorities don't remember it
Hats
Joey Lawrence
Chick who played Blossom is now on the Big Bang Theory
Main chick is also a huge hippie in real life, complete with breastfeeding a school-age kid

Blackness:
Six's ass

Full House

Cacness:
Minimal minorities despite set in California
Bob Saget
Cut. It. Out.
Jingle composers
Middle child ended up a meth head in real life
Kimmy Gibler

Blackness:
Black people actually know what Full House is
House full of family, immediate and extended
John Stamos has more swag than any other white man in existence, comparable only to swag of a black man

so every weekday morning while eating breakfast i watch mad about you because if i watch any more japanese morning variety tv i'm going to kill someone

the last three episodes guest-starred regis philbin, jerry lewis, and mistah sheffieeeeld from the nanny

this seemed like the right thread to mention that

My fiancee has been binge watching Frasier in the backgroud while doing wedding planning for the last month. I don't think I've seen a non-white person in the whole show yet. The closest might have been the female boss of the radio station in one of the early seasons who had a bit of a tan.

I propose that you expand this idea into other types of media.  I suggest "What was the whitest record album of the 90s?"next.  The CD you'd most likely find in your friend's kinda milfy mom's Ford Explorer back when you were a preteen.

Some of my suggestions:

Hootie and the Blowfish: Cracked Rear View
Sixpence None the Richer: Self titled
Any Enya album released in the 1990s
The Verve Pipe: Villains
Gin Blossoms: New Miserable Experience

Oasis: Wonderwall would take it in a landslide

I still think the most urban sitcom of the 90s is another great option
