I love tiny houses. I guess growing up and living in tiny apartments all my life and not hating it generally endears me to the idea.

Eh, them and pre-fabs are all the rage right now.

Though I think I prefer pre-fabs more than small-spaces. While small spaces are more "environmentally" conscious, I worry too much about my pack-rat tendency and spacing issues. Like someone said earlier about the kitchens. Generally the space for the kitchen is fine, but "cramped" after being in houses with more space to move around.

Like this (http://inhabitat.com/eye-catching-shipping-containers-built-inside-two-former-silos-provide-student-housing-in-south-africa/) impresses me more than tiny spaces. Reusing stuff like shipping containers to build houses. Though, I really wonder how sustainable/low-maintenance those routes are.

Momo, that's not a tiny house you posted in the OP-- it's an apartment.  Still awesome as hell, but there is a difference in space.

I'm all about tiny houses/apartments and used to check out videos/blogs on them all the time.  Haven't done it as much this year though.

The last one I saw that was impressive is this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSzgh3D7-Q0

Also this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYV0qATsyts

Love modern designs.  The tiny houses that are almost all unpainted wood suck.

Our current apartment is small (779 square ft.) but very functional.  I think I could go down even smaller, assuming there was enough storage space.  We don't care about having a dining area of any sort, so the additional space is used for my PC/gaming shit.  Stuck an Ikea Expedit shelf unit in the middle of the living room and divided it into living room/office areas.  Works great, although I do miss having my own little room for all my embarrassing nerd shit.   :'(

There are plenty of videos/blogs showing couples and even families happily living in these kinds of small spaces.  It's all about downsizing and getting rid of clutter.  Although with the really tiny houses, there's certainly no such thing as privacy.

Some of the cooler tiny houses actually manage to have two floors or pretty big loft areas, so it actually is possible to have separate bedrooms.

I think these are great but I live in an old Victorian that was converted into 300 square foot apartments. One thing I'm not really a fan of is the modern aesthetic most of these places have.

It makes sense. FatForce = mass * acceleration.  We all know fat people are  rolling with a maxed out m stat :hitler

I think you should look at kinetic energy which is 1/2*m*v^2 so difference in speed probably makes a bigger difference.

Nah you're thinking of force times distance (work). And assuming that there is an inverse relationship between weight and acceleration (obvi) , and a fixed distance to accelerate the fists (ie: b/w bed and kitchenette) , it makes sense that the lighter person could get more energy into their punches.

So if you have a really, really cramped space, I think someone with faster hands would have the advantage.

1/2mv^2 = ma bro.  It's the same thing :hitler

just look at the units. You're saying:

kg*m/s^2=0.5*kg*m^2/s^2      (mass=kg, m=distance, s=time)

Now how about them apples?
Title: Re: tiny houses
Post by: Momo on July 17, 2014, 01:26:43 AM
My god dude, it's just a derivation of the fucking formula :lol

F = ma,
work done = mf x s,  (i.e max) (i.e F x displacement)

WD = max
       = m * (V^2/2x) * x
       = m x V^2/2
= 1/2 mv^2 (this is where you're getting on the boat)

Also you're literally measuring the WORK it requires to move an object X amount of distance, the fuck would you want to use this as a measure of how hard a fat guy will punch you for? Just work out the fucking Force brah. You gonna say some fat guy punches you in the face to the tune of 5000 joules? :hitler

Title: Re: tiny houses
Post by: brawndolicious on July 17, 2014, 05:53:42 AM
I think I see where you're getting mixed up. The force required to create the punch is mass*acceleration but the actual energy in the fist when it lands on a person is given by mass*acceleration*distance. Remember, acceleration and velocity are vectors and it's possible that an object in motion could even have positive velocity and negative acceleration or vice versa.

Hence, why the energy in the punch increases exponentially as acceleration increases but only increases linearly as mass increases. Theoretically, a smaller person may have higher acceleration than a larger person.

No, the force created by the mass accelerating = ma, the work/joules/energy required TO move that fat fist = m*a*displacement(x) :hitler

The micro houses aren't practical because you will have purchase the land to build them on which in an urban area would still be expensive, then you'd be hamstringing yourself in resale value because you can only sell to other impractical people. The best you can do is hope some sensible real estate mogul comes around and levels your micro house and puts in something that people will buy. I will admit they look cool, though.

But there are people who buy them with the express purpose of living 'off-grid', away from urban areas.  Also the ones that are small enough to fit on trailers are essentially motor homes.

I know it's crazy but if my parents or brother (home owners, I'm a lowly renter) ever said "sure you can rip up a chunk of the backyard and build a tiny house!" I'd totally do it.   :P

It would be a tight fit, but in a house like that one it could certainly work.  Turning the garage into a kids' room would be the way to go.  I think in that case it would be all about the outside and surrounding areas.  If there's nowhere for the kids to play and/or if it's a shitty climate, that would really suck.

Here's a 320 sq. ft. house that a family of three lived in.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y15dxUZN3s

They ended up remodling it to give their kid a bigger bedroom.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-i6Y6NB9tLk

Although IIRC they ended up ditching the house and moving to Germany.

Micro house as a fancy guest house is a great idea, actually. You could make a killing on AirBnB depending where you live.

Yeah, that is true.  My folks even live right near two train stations and we're in an area that's very rapidly developing.  Some are thinking it might end up becoming the next Buckhead (Atlanta's upscale shopping/dining/living area).  Hell, we already live right down the road from them now.  But they don't exactly have the best backyard for this kind of thing and it would take a lot of work.

It can be like that in smaller dwellings-- the last apartment I was in was small (current one is even smaller!) but had a pretty big bathroom, complete with a walk-in closet.  Was weird but we weren't complaining!

I read somewhere that small places with bigger bathrooms and kitchens usually yield the most satisfying results.  Makes sense, I guess.  The local IKEA has a small apartment mock up (like 320 sq. ft.) that has a pretty large kitchen area and bathroom.  The living room is what's tiny.

I can't imagine trying to convince someone from Japan, after they'd moved all the way to America, to live in a small house.
