Title: RUST: Hanging out with naked men, trying to survive together (56k warning)
Post by: Shuri on July 27, 2014, 05:27:30 PM
So I picked up Rust on steam last night and it's been quite an experience.

You wake up naked on a island you have to survive against all odds: wild animals, radiation, other players and the various danger of nature. You have to hunt and cook your food. You can build a shelter, and get very elaborate with walls, stairs, multi levels. You can create workbench that allows you to build more complicated objects. You will find weaponry, explosives and whatsnot in abandonned military bases. Sometimes, airplanes will fly and parachute in boxes of supplies, which leads to Battle Royale style battles are players try to get to the packages.

You only start with a big rock, which can be used to carve pieces of wood, hunt wild animals and break other pieces of rocks. You eventually craft better tools.  What makes this very interesting is that it's 100% persistant. You have to hide your character in your shelter or somewhere safe. Even shelters are not safe as other players can break into them if they are persistant enough by breaking the door. The game is a constant state of survival against other players. Some people like this, some don't, I love it. When you die, you die. Your body stays there with the equipment you had; and other players can loot it. You can store stuff at your shed tho.

The crafting is super easy, it's just a menu. You have to find mineral, metal, rocks, wood, cloth, by hunting or carving them. You just select the option and it tells you how much you need. It's very bullshit free, you dont have to learn idiotic patterns like in Minecraft, it's just fun to play. You can build tools, weapons, various items, parts for your house, clothing, etc

It's pretty neat that you have to cook your food. You must first build a fireplace, then set it on fire, then you place your food items. Eating food raw will lead to food poisoning. Careful with fires, as they can be seen by other players.

The game also featured zombies at first, but this was removed completely. Now it's all about survival.

Each time you meet someone, things very tense. I spied on this naked guy who was carving wood and watch him build his home for 20 minutes. I left him alone, I didnt want to kill him. I started exploring the mountain where my house is located, and suddenly I hear this gunshot. IT WAS THE DUDE FROM EARLIER! he missed and was reloading his improvised homemade shotgun. I ran the fuck out (I only had 5 arrows, I had left the others at my shed), and this started a good 2 minutes chase. I eventually got the higher ground and manage to hit him in the chest with the arrow; he somehow survived and ran away. Maybe he died from bleeding; but I never saw him again. The game does not announce kills.

A couple hours later, I was in my shed, cooking chicken and crafting more arrows when I hear two guys roaming about. I go silent and extinguish my fire. They stop. They know i'm there. I can see them thru the cracks in my walls. THEY START BANGING AT THE DOOR WITH THEIR ROCKS. Those fucks were trying to break into my house and steal my shit! They were talking in russian to each other in voice chat.

I ready my bow and point it at my door. Whoever gets in first will end up with an arrow in the skull. Nobody is going to get my precious chicken!

Then.. it stops. The guys give up. They move away. I stayed immobile in my home for a good 2-3 minutes, listening to sounds outside. I eventually unlock the door, bow at the ready, and I start doing this pseudo tactical survey of the area.. Nobody. They were gone.

I took some screenshots!

That's my house! It's very simple. I was cooking chicken. Hmm

Here I am, showing the menu, it's very basic and simple, but it works. The armor part is empty, which means i'm buck naked. I managed to make pants and a tshirt since. On the right you can see the crafting stuff. It's bullshit free, no need to remember tons of bullshit like in Minecraft

My loveshack is hidden somewhere in that mountain. I managed to get lost once and it took me 20 minutes of walking around to find my own shed  :goty2

The world's most boring screenshot.. I'm carving up pieces of wood with my homemade axe

Aw yiss dinner is ready!

It's seriously a very refreshing experience and I recommend it. It's like the best of Minecraft and DayZ (mod, not the horrible standalone) into a single game. It's made by the guy that made Garry's mod. Check it out

I love the concept behind this, but the reality of me playing consistently and/or constantly is just uber unlikely.

Some of us just wanna hang out (pun intended) and admire each other's cocks; why do things always have to descend into violence?

Yo be careful with those prefab shacks. They're much easier to break into than if you make your own wood foundation, walls and roof.
