Not gonna watch that but the Genesis Sonic games are legitimately fun, had pretty great graphics for the time, and the soundtracks are absolutely stellar. But it's fine if you don't enjoy them.

Sonic 1 is a classic game and I prefer it to every 2d Mario aside from Yoshi's Island. The other sonics I can live without - sonic 3&knuckles aside - but sonic 1 is a superbly influential and creative game. Stages like Starlight Zone, Labyrinth, Spring Zone, and Scrap Brain Zone pushed what you could do with a 2d platformer that simply had not been seen before.
I haven't watched the video because I refuse to waste my time, but I can think of dozens of more overrated games: Ff7, super Mario bros 3, super Mario 64, f-zero, halo, Okami, god of war, its sequel Sonic 2, its first 3d game Sonic Adventure, and that's just getting started.

I'm sure there are for more overrated games out there. Like anything Nintendo has made. Demon Souls. Braid. Whatever.

I really like RLM, and Rich Evans is a super solid dude, but Pre Rec is pretty rough. They're awful at games and sound like they have no idea what they're talking about.

I never found ICO that bad. It's average to be sure, but it's not awful.

ICO gets worse with each playthrough I think. And I mean that as in, like, you can't do a third one.
I don't know what the most overrated game is because that shit is hard to quantify, but Sonic 16-bit's rep is as 9.5's when the games are really a consistent bunch of 8's.
I feel like their "scores" at the time were 8-9's more than 9.5-10's. Then sometime around like 2002 there was this revisionist history where they were all-time classics, top ten games ever, etc.
Anecdotally, and the that means it's a fact you can take to the bank, everyone I knew kinda got a Genesis for Madden/NHL/Sonic but the people in the latter camp wound up moving on to other stuff like I dunno all the other platformers or Beyond Oasis or something. Each Sonic game was a cool new thing but wasn't like the next Street Fighter or whatever in terms of mad hype.

I think Sonic sucks. Was always incredibly over-rated. And people who still pine for sonic games are weirdos.
But then we all have our opinions. I'm sure other people feel the exact same way about the things I like. That's why its the internet. Only weirdos get mad at other people's opinions on videogames.

There's some let's play linked on GAF ages ago of Sonic 06 where the dudes are all "you know, this isn't that bad" and then immediately they fall through the floor like ten times and the game goes insane with its physics and stuff.

DKC is definitely overrated, probably more so than Sonic. Both of them are more overrated than Zelda games, which are sometimes overrated and sometimes underrated.
TLoU is definitely shaping up to be a strong contender.
My personal nominee, not for most overrated, but pretty damned overrated, is Half-Life 2. Good game but people carry on like it's the greatest thing ever.
Agreed with HL2. Haven't played TLOU. Zelda depends on the entry.
For what it's worth, the HL2 Episodes are MUCH better than standard HL2, but yeah, HL2 is pretty fucking overrated.

I replay HL2 every couple of years or so. Love the atmosphere and the way you're always moving, even through the story bits. There's a couple of games I do that with - sort of my video game versions of mashed potatoes and gravy, or a big bowl of chili on a cold night. I never participate in praise threads about them, though.

The thing is I think time eventually fixes a lot of this stuff. Things tend to be "over-rated" for a good long while and then properly rated years later.
I think the Sonic thing is a correction to the over-analysis and over interest in all things sonic for all these years.
Half-Life 2 was a great single player fps campaign shooter for its time but its no more important than Deus Ex, or Doom, COD 4, or a lot of other important fps games in the genre historically. It's just that game has developed a cult around it because of Valve.
And yeah I definitely feel that way about the Last of Us as I've gone on about time after time. Good game? Yes. Greatest game? No. In time there will be a correction there too. It's just that currently Naughty Dog is viewed as capable of no wrong by a large group of fans and media so the balanced criticism of their games isn't there at the moment.

HL2 felt like a leap forward in graphics, presentation, physics etc. It immediately made Doom 3 feel kinda trash in comparison so that's why. Awesome game.
Dark Souls is the most overrated game of all time. Ugly as fuck, trial and error dreck :zzz . The only reason people talk about it is because of how desperate everyone is for a non-shit japanese game or a non-shit hard game. 6/10.
I haven't played too much of Dark Souls yet but I thought Half Life 2 was one of the most overrated games I've ever played. Long levels that stretch a (usually shitty) gimmick to its dragging point, floaty movement where you were constantly getting stuck on the environment, and a few easy seesaw physics puzzles and vehicles with crappy controls for "variety".
Goldeneye's gotta be up there too, game was technically deficient even back then with its 10 FPS framerate in multiplayer.

Well I think part and parcel with "over-rated" is a lot more complex nuanced discussion which involves influential games or innovative games. Some games are important not necessarily because they are timeless classics but because they opened the door to something different or something bigger.
Goldeneye is an important and influential game because it was the first, big fps shooter that really demonstrated that fps games were something that a mass console audience would be into and especially on the multiplayer side. Not that it was the first console fps game of course. But that it was the first one that really resonated. The fact that it would be very difficult to go back and play Goldeneye now is arguably true. But the influence of that game is a lot more important than just the goldeneye experience. Not every game is something that everybody will want to play 10 or 20 years down the road. I think a very small amount of games retain that sort of relevance.

Goldeneye has a lot of problems, but also a a lot of innovations or leaps in executions. The way zooming/aiming with the crosshair worked (very cleverly adapted to the N64 controller), the different targets on the difficulty levels which also change the way you approach the levels (relatively few other FPS do this and most of the time they do it in less interesting ways), some great designed levels (first level for example, also brilliantly teaches you how to play the game), the elegant mixture of sneaking with satisfying stealth kills and full on action sequences, the tons of multiplayer options, they way the weapon becomes an extension of the player, compared to other games where the gun is just glued to the side or the middle of the screen. Somewhat difficult to go back today because of technical reasons and some levels are awful (partly due to being overambitious), but it wasn't just the first good console shooter, it also was really different from pc shooters of that time.

My favorite thing about Goldeneye is that it made a whole generation of gamers put the movie up a pedestal. I never heard anyone talk about that movie, then two years later when the game came out, it was suddenly one of the best Bond movies.

I mean, Sonic is overrated but so is half the nostalgia shit we go nuts for. Who cares; Sonic did what it needed to do and kids loved it.
However I think a lot of people confuse 'overrated' with 'being a product of its time' or simply not aging well.
