Title: what do you buy for a ps4?
Post by: Van Cruncheon on September 14, 2014, 04:53:56 PM
with samurai warriors 4 and bloodborne around the corner, i decided to (temporarily) join the console grodies and buy a ps4. i bought:

orochi warriors 3 ultimate
tomb raider definitive edition

what else? i mean, although i have established a pattern of buying games i have already played, i do NOT want the last of us remix as that game is gross garbage.

is infamous second son palatable? any uguu strategy games that aren't abysmal? or should i have blown this money on dual arrow exhausts for my kawasaki instead?

I've picked up most of the first-party exclusives (Killzone, Knack, InFamous) plus Destiny. They're all decent to good games.

Diablo 3 is a lot of fun using a controller for direct control of your character, and you can do same-screen mp

Second Son isn't as good as the other inFamous games, and there isn't as much to do, but it is pretty - the standalone DLC First Light is better IMO, it's more focused (and it's only $15)

Destiny is boring unless you play with other people

Metro Redux is nice looking

Sian might like PvZ Garden Warfare, and that's a fun game even if you don't like MP games or FPS, you can do split screen on the Graveyard Ops mode

Get PS+ and the free games every month

Killzone turns into "fuck, we better finish this shit up if we're gonna have it out for launch" about halfway through

Uh, that's about it...

Eel, how long is Second Light?

Haven't gotten back to it to finish it, but the reviews I read placed it around 4 hours. Then there's wave-based challenges, if you like that type of game mode. Then there's collecting all the neon fragment things. How Long To Beat puts it at 5 1/2 hours to do everything.

I am a festering pile of hate and doubt. I look down upon myself for making mistakes which I see, after the fact, were incredibly stupid. I’m second guessing and double checking not only my actions as I play games, but things I do in real life. I resent Natural Doctrine for turning me into this husk filled with only the most negative emotions. I’m convinced the “Mature” rating is for all the swearing that comes after failing a battle you’ve spent 20 minutes fighting. Especially since it’s probably only the third battle in the entire game.

They're going to have patch support for the next gen systems going forward but not last gen systems, so that's pretty much it.

serious answer is that Velocity 2X is probably the best game and it's the ps plus game this month.  resogun is fun too if you like defender.  uh, the UFC demo has muscle giggle physics but runs at 900p.

If you want more musou, there's Dynasty Warriors 8 XL.  It's got better visuals than the PC version, although the framerate is all over the place.

Samurai Warriors 4 is the best port to PS4 though.  Orochi 3 Ultimate, port-wise, is pretty mediocre, although the game is still awesome.

I didn't try Infamous Second Son, but got First Light.  Played it once and got bored after 15 minutes.  Give me Saint's Row IV over this any day.  Avoid Killzone.  Maybe get Ground Zeroes if you haven't played that yet.

There really isn't much worth playing on the PS4 that you can't already get on PC/PS3.  Don't play mine very much.

The PS4 gaming scene sucks ass at the moment and will continue to suck ass for the coming months.  I use it primarily as a Netflix machine.

Fortunately I'm really enjoying WO3 Ultimate.  It has been the fourth time I've purchased the game and I'm still having a lot of fun with it.  Also I have yet to experience any slowdown with this game.  DW8XL's slowdown was unacceptable considering how minor of an upgrade it was over the PS3 version.

Post by: The Legend of Sunblade on September 14, 2014, 10:20:21 PM
Rayman Legends is nice by virtue of being one of the versions with no touchpad controls.

I liked infamous, but the short lenght and small city size kinda sucked. Pretty game though. AC4 has more shit to do.

Strider, Guacamelee and Velocity 2X are my top picks for digital-only stuff, along with Sportsfriends if you have local people to mess around with.

Or you can make a jPSN account and download the F2P Dream C Club "game" and animu mahjong.  :uguu

If you have a good PC and are picky, there's nothing that will make you happy on PS4.

If you have lowered standards and a 580GTX or older, ACIV, Wolfenstein are nice running, heavy gameplay content good games with flaws.  Infamous is ok, but short and not much to it besides looking pretty.  PSN has some stuff like Guacemelee Directors Cut, Velocity 2X.  PS4 has best looking version of Pinball Arcade, but it has shitty sound and lack of tables so far.  Metal Gear: Ground Zeroes is amazing, but it's only a highly replayable demo.  P.T. is neat I guess.  Vita Remote play is pretty decent for some stuff.  PS+ has a lot of free content that's worth spending time on each month but wouldn't necessarily be worth buying independently.

Towerfall is fun local MP.  Did you redeem it when it was a free Plus game?

But yeah, PS4 sucks right now.  Great controller though.  Much improved over the 15 year old DS.

I was seriously considering getting a PS4 but instead I will spend that $400 on 50% of a new stroller. #dadlife

Are good strollers really that expensive?!

Man, that makes me not want to have kids for a few years after starting full-time.

Edit: Oh, uh, I bought AC4 (finished), Watch Dogs (dropped), and Knack (didn't bother to start).  A lot of the neater things are multiplat anyway, and you can get them on PC for possibly cheaper at some point, so I wouldn't really bother with a PS4 at this point.  I still use my PS3 way more often, and I barely even play my consoles lately to begin with.

I feel like we're going to say that more often anyway: "everything is multiplat".  Starting to feel like I should've just invested in a better PC/gaming laptop instead.

You can get a good single stroller for $240-400. This would be for a good double stroller that can also convert down to single, which runs $500-800. We aren't pregnant with our second yet, but, planning ahead!

NOTE: This discussion of stroller pricing is also more interesting than any PS4 game

Double stroller already? Holy shit man. I love my daughter more than anything but the thought of two kids freaks me the fuck out. Good for you, man.

Kiddo is 2 1/2 and we're still getting a ton of use out of our BOB (MSRP $479 for those curious).

I used to think strollers were cheap, but back when I was a kid I don't think they converted too easily or even at all.  I can see why you're paying that much since you basically get what you pay for, so paying for something that would last longer is a good idea.

I want to ask how much car seats, cribs, and diapers are these days but I almost don't want to know.  More or less than a PS4?

Friends are trying to convince me to get a PS4.

I have barely used my PS3, but that was largely due to MS’ prescient use of social features on 360, and continued updating of the system to improve those features.

The used units in Japan are about $270, but don’t have the camera. What does the camera do on PS4? Is it like Kinect2 on Xbone?

What should I be wary of before buying? Are PS4 games region-locked? Are the player accounts locked to their specific region?

Gah, I’m so unsure about this. The guys in question are using it to play Destiny, and claim they’re having a great time doing it.

Don't get one unless you want it yourself.

There is a cool tech demo for it called The Playroom. Since it's not included in most bundles, it's not well supported. You're not missing out on much if you get a unit without a camera.
Quote
What should I be wary of before buying?
Nothing really. You need a PS+ subscription to play most games online. It's well worth the money considering all the free games you're getting every month.
Quote
Are PS4 games region-locked?
Nope. DLC is tied to the same region as the disc. Don't buy DLC from the Japanese store if you bought a North American game.
Quote
Are the player accounts locked to their specific region?
Yes. PS+ is also region-specific.
Quote

Destiny is loads of fun even though the story isn't Oscar worthy.

Don't bother with the camera.  It's useless.

What should I be wary of before buying? Are PS4 games region-locked? Are the player accounts locked to their specific region?

To clarify/add to what archnemesis said, while you need a Plus sub to play online now (with a few exceptions), like the PS3, you can play U.S. and Japanese games on any account, plus use the DLC  for them on said accounts.  You just need to remember to activate each account you use as a primary PSN account and then all DLC will be available.

So for example, I'll import Japanese games and purchase DLC off J-PSN, but still play them on my U.S. account, problem-free.

Gah, I’m so unsure about this. The guys in question are using it to play Destiny, and claim they’re having a great time doing it.

Not worth it for one game IMO.

I'm interested in Sunset Overdrive, but that's about it. Destiny looks good and fun, despite the naysayers, but I'm not really that impressed with post-original-HALO Bungie's work. I abandoned HALO 3 and barely squeezed out a completion in bro-op on HALO 3.

Destiny doesn't seem like it's fallen that far from the HALO tree.

The PS4 is actually a really nice machine for people who doesn't have an enormous Steam library. There are plenty of good PC and PS3 ports for it.

With two free games every month and a handful of free enhanced versions of PS3 games I already have a large library for it.
