Title: iOS8!

Post your impressions here. Still tinkering with it, and so far it's okay. Safari is buggy though.

I don't think I'll ever make use of most of the big new features.  :(

The health app seems neat, but I haven't even begun to comprehend how to use it. Plus I don't really care about my health anyways.

Health app confuses me. How do you even use it? Do you just jot medical info down?

Check out the yahoo weather widget
Title: Re: iOS8!
Post by: king of the internet on September 18, 2014, 03:45:26 PM
What's different with that? I've been using the yahoo weather app from the store. It's so pretty.  :-[

With that health app you can basically use it to moderate every aspect of your health and build a complex medical record...but it's a lot of work. Plus how am I supposed to know my peak expiratory flow rate or peripheral perfusion index or what those things even mean.

It tracks how many steps you've taken and how many miles you've walked/run in a day/week/month/year. That's the one part that's somewhat neat/understandable.

My impressions:

Yup, it's iOS.

LOL, you need almost 5GB free to download and install it.

Yup, it's iOS.

What the fuck is with the portrait change now? I flip to safari and it'll be locked in portrait and I have tilt it and then get it back in landscape

Honestly, what's different (and yes, I've been using iOS 8 for a day)?
Title: Re: iOS8!
Post by: Himu on September 18, 2014, 08:21:27 PM
I'm not even sure yet.

So far the biggest diff is the App Store. You can dl widgets now.

Post by: Himu on September 18, 2014, 08:28:52 PM
Safari no longer displays the time in landscape mode. Even if you tap the top.

The 4S will primarily be an App device for my 2 1/2 year old daughter now, so I doubt we'll upgrade it to 8.

i'm on a 4s as well, but i haven't noticed any slowdowns.

does it occur when using certain apps or are you talking about the overall experience?
Title: Re: iOS8!
Post by: huckleberry on September 19, 2014, 06:38:41 AM
Overall experience. Especially the time it takes to open apps. Noticeably slower than 7 on her phone.

I'm not that worried about it since this one is going up on Craigslist but I feel for anyone on a 4s who upgraded. Of course, I have always had bad luck with ios releases so who knows.

ah, cool.

yeah, i haven't noticed any major slowdowns.

whatsapp is actually a lot faster for me now, but that has everything to do with the update they rolled a few days ago.

When we went in to get my 5S my wife pre-ordered a 6. Would've done the same, but I bought a case in Japan that only works on the 5 series, so I stuck by what I said back in April and got a 5S.

Someone was walking around here with a 6+.  Now I'm unsure if it's for me-- seemed way, way too big.  Felt pretty light to hold though.

Looks like iPhone 6 models are readily available at Apple stores now.  LOL at the idiots who waited in long lines for them.

Going to go try out the Plus, if they have demos out.  If it's just big, will get a regular 6.  My wife got hers from Apple.com yesterday and it already seems a bit too big compared to the 5.

Keeping my Plus pre-order.  After fucking around with the phones at the Apple Store, the larger size didn't seem too gargantuan with both to compare and the extra features are nice.  I wish the smaller model had cut and paste keys.  WTF Apple?

chrome, but safari and other programs are slower too, and it's mainly the wifi.  don't think it's my router since it happens with others and every other device is fine.

Isn't "chrome" on ios not really chrome at all, but just a wrapper for the Safari layout/rendering engine?

How could it not be the case though? AFAIK none of the mobile OSes really give apps the permissions you'd need to actually implement your own browser engine. I guess you could try to differentiate on shell features, which is what tab sync is.

I'm beginning to really hate the releases for these things. It seems like any time I pull it out I get some kind of snarky comment. "Haha how long did you wait for that?" "Haha bend that thing yet?" "Haha did you put yours in the microwave? "Haha iPhones are for girls go android" It happens every time I upgrade, and it wouldn't be half as annoying if these folks would stick by their dumb brand cheerleading. But I've lost count of people who've said shit like this and wound up getting some variation of iPhone shortly thereafter. ::)

The thing is, I'm not even one of the 'cultist' type Apple fans. I've considered switching to Android a couple times, and any time I explore my options I wind up deciding that I'd just rather stick to what I've known for years rather than learn a new OS. People act like you have to go through some kind of initiation ritual where you hold a burning picture of Jobs in your hand while you swear to never betray La Nostra Mela, when the reality is I'm just too lazy to switch. I knew Android users hated iOS, but it didn't sink in til I realized every post on my FB about the 6 was some jeering, snide android fan getting their licks in. As long as I can take dope pics, listen to whatever I want to on the planet, and meet strange women on the internet with minimal effort, I'm happy.

Also hilariously got to hear a friend who's not really in the tech loop go on a long rant about how Apple is doing everything two years late, and now nobody wants this shit and Apple is dead. I mean, I assume the popularity of iPhones is waning, but when was the last time people lined up around the block for whatever Samsung put out last?

As I've said several times, most of the cutting edge apps, not just games, are being brainstormed, designed, and developed on iOS first.  iOS development features some of the best design and broad scope productivity philsophies in the mobile scene.

Most of the career grit and grind programmers and developers prefer android for the freedom, and Google kicks Apple's ass in terms of OS design and development tools (although they still baffle with some of their choices).  Unfortunately, those guys don't run these start ups for the most part.  And if they do, they acknowledge that iOS development is where effort should be spent first and foremost.

I'm curious about Android and would buy (read: "allow someone to lend me") an Android device, but I already have more games than I can play on iOS and Android peeps are always complaining that no-one makes stuff for them.

I can tell you what I hate about iOS though, and some Paranoid Android-head can tell me if it exists on their platform:

Very limited local file storage from web:
- find a pic you like? tap-and-hold to save the file to your camera roll.
- find a PDF you wanted? tap-and-hold to open it in iBooks, saving it locally -- it's stored on your Mac if you back up locally, but otherwise it's only resident on the device
- find an MP3 you like? GOOD LUCK SAVING IT ON YOUR PHONE.
- same with MP4 or any other kind of media which could be feasibly connected to MPAA or RIAA interests.

Somewhat stupid Options locations; half of them are in the apps, WHERE THEY BELONG, the rest are in iOS' Options which further separates them by category, so they're not in a single list, AND then has separate headers again for Privacy and Notifications, which then have sub-lists for the apps again. WHAT A MESS.

Huh.

I guess I've only got the two gripes. That's surprising.

I'll just say this: even at its best, Android is a buggy mess which lags at times on even the most powerful new hardware. It can run like complete shit one minute and butter the next. If you know that going in, and are willing to accept the performance tradeoff for the customization freedom and external storage options, it's a better overall OS.

using android is like using your parents pc: it can be a janky mess and sometimes it's a pain the ass, but you can still do whatever you want on it as long as you put in the time.

8.0.2 is out now. Fixes all the stuff they broke in 8.0.1.

I think I'll wait for 8.0.3

Finally got my iPhone 6 Plus.  Was interesting watching the tracking progress.  The package just sort of went between depots in China and South Korea for a week with exceptions like crazy, then shipped Thursday and was delivered the next day.

Concerns over the size are gone.  The phone fits comfortably in my front pocket.  The Spigen clear case I got fits it like a glove and is thin enough that it's not even noticeable times.  The battery life is awesome and the larger screen is enough that I may start doing some iOS gaming...if they ever get games updated, that is.  The stuff I tried either crashed or didn't scale up properly.  It's a mess.

One thing that ran great and looked fantastic blown-up on the larger screen was Gridlee, AKA MAME.  Was surprised at how good and how well games I tried ran.  Now I need a controller, because touch controls are ass.

Bend-gate has affected me in that I now keep checking the shape of the phone every time I take it out of my pocket.

The bending thing is people trolling. I'm sure there are valid cases, but the video of that nerd straining his cup-ramen fueled muscles against a phone case was hilarious.

The whole bending phenomenon is odd.  People who don't own iPhones care more about it than people that do... I wonder why?

Switching gears, I really need the App Store to start approving all of these apps optimized for larger screens. It's bad on the six, but I can't imagine how bad unoptimized apps look on the six plus.

I'm not expecting to find the phone bent, it's just that those stupid videos have made me slightly paranoid in the back of my mind.   :lol

Used my Plus pretty heavily yesterday and the battery was only down to around 76% at the end of the day.  So awesome.

Yeah, that was my reaction upgrading from 4S to 5S -- Hey, it’s the evening, and I still have battery left? NO WAY.

One thing that does still run the battery down too quick?  Gaming.  I tried Modern Combat 5 online, and after 15 minutes, 20% of the battery was lost.

You do understand that graphics require processing, and processing requires power, right?  :P

Please understand.

I think I'm just battery-paranoid.  I swear the battery is draining faster than it should for even "regular" use.  Like I start browsing a website and one minute later, one percent of the battery has already gone down.  Maybe that's just how it is when you open the browser or take the phone out of standby mode.  But despite what I perceive as battery drain, I still end up with like 60-70% of the battery remaining by the the end of the day, so I'm probably just fucking nuts.   :dizzy  It does feel like some of the charge is lost more quickly when in standby mode, however.  I don't remember the battery draining say, 5-8% if I leave it in my pocket unused for several hours on my previous iPhone models.  I went and turned off a number of settings that are supposed to help with battery life and reset network settings, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference.

I should probably just turn off the battery percentage meter and stop worrying over what is likely nothing.

You can check what apps are using batter percentage for the last 24 hours or so now. That helps, if you're checking that.

I have and it's pretty much just Safari.

Can anyone explain how to delete photos en masse to me? I have 2 gigs of space eaten up by pics I have backed up and I can't figure out how to get rid of them without selecting them one by one, and fuck that noise.

Deleting them from your phone, or deleting them from a photo stream, or deleting from a backup?

I have been having trouble uploading images to safari so I checked out the patch notes for 8.0.2 and thought that it'd be a good update. Since it's been a few weeks, they haven't put out 8.0.3 yet, I figured it was a stable update after the borked 8.0.1. Nope.

Put my phone in recovery.

:-\ Now I've lost everything and currently restoring from the ground up. Thank Apple! Looking online, this is a common problem with 4's and 5's. Do NOT update your 4 or 5 to 0.2. DO NOT. Warning, DO NOT.
