GAF pc wanna be masterace are finding out that next gen has brought a hike in requirements.
Are you guys ready for 4GB vram in Evil Within and 6GB in Shadow of Mordor (for ultra)?
This game looks on par with mid-cycle PS360 games, why would it need that much of VRAM?
Sorry but asking a sane man to to put his luxurious 4GB VRAM in use on shitty looking games is as hostile as killing his dearly beloved pet.
I hope this game fails commercially.
Delish tears coming from the PC crowd is best tears
really upset. Already spent money on the pc version and now i feel ripped off. You would think a 4770 16gb ram and gtx 770 2gb ocd would run this fine but that comment about the vram is absurd. They will be crucified if this runs badly on lower settings on 2gb cards. In fact the whole silence on pc reqs is shady as fuck and thus might be a real shit port. this better be some nvidia 9xx marketing deal.
:neogaf
If the VRAM problems are a real thing with new games, frankly the deserving targets of blame are people high up in the management divisions of GPU manufacturering companies... especially $1000-for-decent-VRAM-amounts-Nvidia. $700, top of the line 780Tis being forbidden from having 6 GB models... great move you pile of cheap, greedy dirtbags. Oh, and awesome news, the new 980 is a whopping 5% faster and almost as expensive, but if you want that extra GB of VRAM, better pay up. Disgusting.

I expected this when I bought my 4 GB card 16 months ago. At least I will be able to continue to play new games on medium for another couple years before I'm forced to upgrade.

:aah
Posting inflammatory console warrior crap here instead of NeoGaf where you'd get rightfully torn to shreds. :noah

A big hike was gonna happen and any real pc gamer knew this, these kids these days just don't know.

Having to upgrade the video-card for the Rage engine is the ??? ??? ???-part for me. Couldn't care about "next gen" bump, that'll happen. But for "iD Tech 5"? :what

Why is Lager acting like a git? Why is he assuming all pc users have a top of the line rig? Why is he assuming all pc users fall for the master race crap?
-
That's it.
LEPER LAGER.
-
will this run on my brand new macbook pro since technically it has unlimited rams
-
So when I build that CPU for the same price as the PS4 I'll have to add like $50 extra so I can play this?

Not all Himu, jeebus.
Obviously you are cut from a better cloth.
It's just all those PC kiddies that just buitl their first PC the last two years and thought they were boss
PC folk have been super annoying on GAF

Nothing new, and PC vets knew this was coming, as Arch shows.
Also I called it in 2013, but PC gaf has become blind but now shit Im redeemed already

The thing with that though, is people say the 360 graphics card is the same as a ATI card that came out in 2006. The technology wasn't in PCs then. Times have changed and now you're hearing rumours that the cards won't be more advanced that PC cards (like they used to be back in the days).
Sadly, PC technology no longer works in this way of thinking.
I don't think it's wise to compare this gen with what's going to happen next-gen. I mean, yes, the PC requirements will probably increase, but PC tech has advanced a lot due to the abnormally lengthy console cycle this gen.
You also have to take into account that next-gen probably won't be a massive leap due to a myriad of reasons. I will be honestly surprised if a current high-end PC cannot handle next-gen third-party games easily
I think where this argument really starts to fall apart is the PC market isn't where it was 7 years ago.
My 2 gtx 670s get an average of 42fps in the new dawn graphics demo and there is absolutely no way the next gen console will be able to get even in an inch of that. Some PC gamers are starting a new standard of 2560 res or 120hz refresh rate so PCs now will be a gen above next gen consoles. Its so funny that consoles next gen will finally maybe have 1080p 60fps games when that's old news for PCs lol as the next gen consoles get older then you won't see that many 1080p 60fps games because games will a lot better and of course devs will try to make the games comparable to the current PCs of that time so naturally cut backs will have to be made. And PC devs will get better at optimizing their games. Metro Last Light will be as next gen as bit gets in terms of visuals and current PCs will be able to run that. When next gen consoles come out you're not gonna see final fanasty CGI type graphics period.

I didn't even have to wait two years to get validated on shit.

I'm gonna ride out next-gen on medium settings until the VR wars resolve, then Jump In to True 90Hz Stereoscopic Virtual Reality Gaming

So this isn't really a big deal. Right. :beli

This means my next GPU will have to have 6GB VRAM. I just can't deal with the dick shrinkage from not being able to use max settings.

Does this mean PC gaming is dying again?

I joined GAF at the height of the "PC gaming is dead" years. A few years of me posting screenshots and the trend turned.
I liked the thank you card Gabe sent me.

Does this mean PC gaming is dying again?
It just means we'll have to wait another two or three years to play current games The Way It's Meant To Be Played™. By that time consoles will be old and busted and my PC will be hot and fast again, and cutting through Destiny PC like butter. :rejoice

this reminds me of Remedy moving the FOV slider out of video options because PC gamers instinctively max out all the settings
-
Eh, the backlash re: The Evil Within doesn't strike me as altogether unreasonable, given Bethesda's weird refusal to give minimum requirements, and their doubling down on the 4GB VRAM requirement(?) when pressed.
Shadows of Mordor complaints seem silly to me - going by the available specs, it seems reasonably scalable. A bunch of GAFfers looking at screens and videos and trying to insist precisely what the requirements "should" be is pretty amusing.

Evil Within sounds like a trash tier game.
Bububu Mikami.
So? Miyamoto is da gawd and he made Wii Music.
Gaming is dead.
PC master race won't save us.
And certainly not Bethesda. :neogaf
The Evil Within is basically Resident Evil 4: Silent Hill, though. In other words, pretty awesome.

One thing I do find funny is like two years ago a whole bunch of "WHY ARE GPU MAKERS PUTTING SO MUCH VRAM IN THEIR CARDS?!? GAMES DON'T EVEN USE 1GB!!!" articles/threads/etc. And that one Nvidia card with 3GB had people throwing shit fits about how nothing takes advantage of it.
I have to imagine most of these games will do okay with recent cards, even some of the recent games with high resolution texture packs weren't denting those too much, personally, it's the CPU I'm going to have to finally move on from...Core 2 Duo E8400...end of an era :'(
But I knew that a while ago, kept putting it off since like Battlefield was the only game that was really upset about it. (And NBA 2K since the port had some really shoddy multithreading that the i5's and i7's just brute force through.) Almost anything else coming over from consoles was just fine maxed out.

Oh, who am I kidding, I'm just going to play Civ V anyway.

You know as much as there are devs that screw up with pc ports, there are modders that fix the games.

Without consoles, I'm crazy straight /
I'm still playing games I bought on sale in 2008
If you don't care about playing the new games, there is no cheaper method to play games than upgrading your pc 3 years into a console cycle.

the next big console war will be nvidia vs. amd :smug
which one has blast processing

nvidia. definitely nvidia. :bow dynamic super resolution

AMD sucks
And I refuse to hear otherwise. This is the only brand stanning I will get into. AMD sucks.

Nexte year will be the real deal. Nvidia rebranding their "new" 7xx series twice tricked those simpletons too. I loved that.

So it's interesting to see the real start of PS4/Xbone quality gaming on PC and what kind of specs you need to run these games.
AC: Unity
Far Cry 4
Dragon Age: I
All can't run 60fps/1080p max settings on the strongest single card on the market $600+ GPU (GTX 980) /$1,500+ build with no AA. They hit close to 60fps most of the time but all 3 are showing dips into the 45-60fps range. If you want good image quality (aka, some MSAA 2x or even 4x) you're looking at around 30-40fps and you need to SLI a second card ($1,200 worth of GPU) for 1080p/60fps 4x AA which is kind of insane requirements. And that's with the strongest card on the market, with anything near what's actually in the PS4/Xbone you probably could get the games to even run.
Now the question is whether the new engines are just so high tech, that PC is getting dated very quickly, or if the above games were just rushed & un-optimized for PC. Then the question is whether this is just going to get worse or better as the generation gets along. Hmmm.
Otoh,
Alien Isolation
Shadows of Mordor
Run amazingly well and optimized on PCs. So the jury is still out.
Next up is GTAV which could go either way since it's a big impressive world with a lot going on, plus GTAIV being terribly unoptimized on PCs, but if PS4/Xbone are running it pretty much 1080p/30fps locked maybe the PC version will be able to handle it nicely.
-
The Evil Within ran really well, too, despite Bethesda hyping up those VRAM requirements.
-
yeah, I'm upgrading to a 970 and most benchmarks I've seen are kinda underwhelming but we'll see. game sizes are also going way, way up on PC.

Gotta take advantage of that Bluray, bro.

clowns, wait for dx12/mantle-optimized games. dx11 doesn't have efficient asymmetric gpu mp or performant deferred rendering. dx12 and mantle are LITERALLY console-style low level graphics apis -- with dx12, yer runnin' xbone's exclusive mode apis on vastly superior hardware.
-
pc masters, just relax and don't do it, you'll be blowin' 4k, 60 fps gooey graphics loads in down-rez console rectums by mid-'15
-
Why did I think the 980 is dx12 compatible when it really isn't? ??? Swear I read that somewhere.
-
Last gen I was a console dirtperson for at least the first year or two of the cycle then transitioned to PC when the console hardware started to become severely outdated. Seems like I'll be doing the same this go -around as well.
-

It is compatible as far as I know. DX12 just hasn't been released yet.

I tried the demo finally after this and what, nooooooo. If you don't mind 30fps then yeah you can run it at 2k-4k maxed looking all nice, but the game does not seem to work right at all with 60fps. On my 980, even with 1080p, no AA it likes to hover around 52fps instead of 60fps with dips to the mid-40s. And putting 4x AA doesn't even make a frame difference, still get ~52fps. Feels stuttery >:( Don't know what black magic they did to make it such a technical fuck up.

Hope this happens! I got around to trying out 4k downsampling to 1080p the other day and ooooh boy does it look nice. So freaking sharp. I may actually pick up a second 980 next year to SLI and try to game at 4k.
-
yeah, the evil within demo ran terribly on my 560ti. the card is getting old, and back then it was low-mid, but still. it and a couple other games I held off on until I upgrade, soon, hopefully.

I can't remember if mantle will be compatible with nvidia cards or I'm mistaking it for the variable refresh rate thing. but I suppose dx12 will be bigger and the standard across amd and nvidia.
-
Messing around with Unity in 4k earlier was gorgeous. This is with no AA, 4k using Nvidia's DSR with 33% downsmoothing. (compression is from steam) Runs at about 12fps :lol

Could be something to do with the higher framerate, since that wasn't even allowed initially [it was hard capped at 30 for about a month until Bethesda released a patch that go rid of the cap]. It ran decently on my 750ti, but I haven't tried it uncapped yet.
