THE BORE

I've had my RoG laptop since 2009. 2 core duo, 260m (they're on 900's now :uguu). It has served me well! Especially in gaming. The only thing I have trouble playing on this computer is saints row the third with AWFUL frame rate and The Witcher 2 for obvious reasons. Other than that, it's great, and has worked fine for work (graphic design) but not hobby stuff. It lags when doing heavy duty processing such as digital painting. Considering I try to pluck in x amount of hours painting per week, this is getting tedious.
SO! I'm finally buying a new laptop. :usasalute
I'm not getting a gaming laptop this time, though. It'll have the power of one. I'm looking at the HP Envy 17t. I've been looking at it for a year and a half while monitoring upgrades in tech, actually.
My proposed customized specs:
Windows 8.1
Intel Core i7-4702MQ Processor (that's quad core)
Nvidia 750m or 850m, 4gb ram. I'm still looking at this and not sure which to get. I may be thinking of 820m and how the 750m was still a much better video card.
1tb hd. My current one only has 300gb. :stahp
8gb ddr3 ram
1600x900 display (or should I go with 1920x1080)?
There's two envy's I'm looking at:

This has 4th generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4510U Dual Core Processor + 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M Graphics
And
http://m.store.hp.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/m20ProductDisplayView?storeId=10151&productId=231653&urlRequestType=Base&langId=-1&catalogId=10051#/choices/choice/E4S81AV.OperatingSystem
This has NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GT 750M Graphics with 4096MB of dedicated video memory
WHICH ONE?
-
This tells me to go with the 850m but that option requires a DUAL CORE PROCESSOR.

What to do?
-
Really wait just a little bit till the dust settles on what normal next gen specs will be required.
-
I am not buying this just for games. I need this for work and to work on art. Immediately.

Get a Sager :rock
-
That...doesn't look like a bad option.

How's their customer service? How's their product life? I've had my Asus for 5 years.
Does anyone know where I can get a student discount for adobe suite? Note: I am not a student.

Um. I don't understand.

Sager laptops have the Cruncheons Seal of Approval (tm)
I know that both Van Cruncheon and Bork Laser have sagers and I believe they're generally fairly happy with them. If I weren't always at home I'd look into getting one, but I just built a badass new desktop so I'm not really worried about it at the moment.

In other words who are these people/designers who think tacky shite of putting LEDs/tribal tats/laquered on jizz looks cool? I mean the hardware itself is nice but do they have to mess it up with the aforementioned Gaming PC Cool?
-
Only gamers and nerds think that shit looks cool. I hate that tribal shit and I wish there were a way to not it have it on there.
So with one of these laptops I'll finally be able to play Witcher 2 on ultra and do my digital painting with my computer turning into a slide show. Excite!

high - 40
ultra with FXAA - 32

Thoughts?

Himu, I had no trouble ordering a laptop from Sager directly. Paid the $50 "I'm an impatient mutha fucka-- gimme now" fee and had the laptop within two days of placing an order. Been extremely happy with it and its build quality; it's plastic, but doesn't feel cheap, and it's been able to run everything I've thrown at it at good framerates, on high/ultra settings and 1920x1080 resolution.
This guy's specs are roughly the same as mine:

(Click for info)
Insane for a 13.3" laptop. I'm sure if you get a larger size you can spec one out to be more powerful. I wanted to go with the smallest size available for when I bring it with me.
-
sorry if it's a stupid question, but do any laptops have firewire ports? i have an audio interface that uses one.
-
Sager is totally okay. We were using one as our dev machine for Galak-Z (thanks Cruncheon)

What’s a decent (read: non-netbook) option for my friends who travel a bunch? They have an Asus netbook from 5 years ago which needs to be Old Yeller’d something fierce.
These peeps don’t game or anything, they just need to be able to use Excel and Word and stuff, but not wait a year for it to launch the app or wake from sleep.

ASUS T100 if a smaller screen is fine. Comes with a free copy of Office 2013 too.

Work got me a Lenovo Carbon X1. It is pretty amazing in terms of weight… I think it weighs less than my iPad… But they made some real boneheaded design decisions as far as the keyboard is concerned
