Given that Nintendo is already on the third or fourth iteration of 3ds, don't they usually announce a new handheld system around this time? Right now they seem to be in the dsi/gb micro stage and I don't expect them to stick with the same portable hw too long. Recent NA sales aren't helping.

It's called the iphone

Whatever it is I know it will work similar to how the Wii U pad works with the Wii U. By that it will be the main controller for whatever the next home console is from them. Unless they just give up on mobile which I don't think will happen given the success of the 3ds.

Nintendo tablet
With optional controller shell
I'd buy that.

Well The NEW 3DS is coming soon/out already in Jappaland, so something 2016 or so would make sense.

2016 seems too early, especially for a portable. The New 3DS is a hardware upgrade, so there's enough to keep things going for another few years.
I hope that the rumors of the next Nintendo system being a portable/console hybrid are true. Makes more sense for Nintendo.

What? 2016 is the new 3DS/Wii U successor for sure. 2015 is possible but very unlikely due to the 3ds they just released.
And the 3DS they just released isn't a real hardware upgrade. It's like DSi and oh man there were just so many DSi-only games, right? There will be like 3 games per year and under 10 games total in its lifetime released for new 3DS only to take advantage of the upgraded bits.

DSi was released in 2008/2009 with 3DS launching in 2011. New 3DS launches in 2014/2015, so 2016 is a safe bet.

yes, it is called the Nintendo WiiDS and is a portable that only plays retro games from Wii U Virtual Console

There were like five retail DSi releases, and none of them were anything of note. They've already announced Xenoblade for the New 3DS. While I doubt there will be a large amount of N3DS only titles released, I can see them waiting another two years or longer to release an actual successor. A five year cycle seems pretty short for a Nintendo handheld.

gba was out for only 4 years when ds came out. it took at least three more years to kill it, so about 8 year life span. but that gaming market is no longer here nor there.

No, they're going to introduce a revolutionary device that allows you to plug a small box into any screen and then play games with a touchpad*. ANY SCREEN. So it's portable and has infinite touch controls. (But only one finger at a time.)
Also you can make phone calls from it if you plug the box into a landline and purchase Nintenphone Service along with an existing provider. But you can only receive sound unless you buy a wired headset that plugs into the box.
*Without a screen.
