Another year of underachieving one and done Kentucky freshmen.

underachieving
what's crazy is that they really haven't

There's a running narrative that Calipari is slime, destroying the integrity of the sport by gaming the system and his relationship with World Wide Wes is everything that's wrong with America. And I don't disagree with any of that, but the one and done angle is a self-fulfilling prophecy and just skraight up not true. For reference:

2010 - 35-3 (1st in conference) Elite 8
2011 - 29-9 (2nd) Final Four
2012 - 38-2 (1st) Chip
2013 -21-12 (2nd) NIT
2014 - 29-11 (2nd) Runner-up

The first team w/ Boogie and Wall underachieved by a game; Brandon Knight and Terrence Jones (:mjlol) led the 2nd to a FF (:dahell); AD's team was the NCAA's best of the past 5 years and it's not even close; 2013 is the anomaly here, due in large part to Noel's late season injury, yes national perception of them was inflated to begin the season, but they were still ranked prior to Nerlens going down and would have contended for a spot in the second weekend; last year, preseason ranking inflated again, but they showed and proved once tourney time rolled around.

So, in short, fuck Calipari. But we don't need to reduce his team's accomplishments to argue that he's a piece of shit.

First day of action

evidently Duke shat on some Protestants. didn't watch but going by the box score they shot the ball really well. Freshman looked like they played well. really like that team.

no upsets yet. closest win is Kansas, beat UC Santa Barbara by 10

Kansas offense just got their backs blown out for 40 straight minutes on national television :kobeyuck

OJ Mayo and Lil Romeo were not worth the years that have followed. Team is gonna be so bad again this year.
I've peeped a couple games, McLaughlin looks like he'll be a really nice piece for them for the next four years. Jovanovic is a (really) poor man's Nikola Vucevic, he's aight.

....and that's it. That team really fucking sucks and if the PAC was actually competent this season I'd struggle to see them winning more than a game in conference play (but it's not, ASU might be the 5th best team and they legit lost 50% of their offensive production and all of their interior defensive presence and they added nothing). That program really hasn't been shit since Taj Gibson :larry.

MEANWHILE, the UCLA Alfords look like they're legit gonna contend for (2nd in) the PAC-12 reg season championship and Kara is nowhere to be found. Maybe he's taking a break :yeshrug. Maybe he found happiness :yeshrug.

There was a debate on my favorite sports radio show about whether this Kentucky team could beat the Sixers :heh

As shitty as the Sixers are I still think they'd win on strength alone. Anthony Davis 3 years ago compared to now is a totally different person. Kentucky's front court would get pushed around by players with 2+ years of NBA experience/weight room experience.

UNC got dropped by Butler today, looking like Sconwinsin's gonna breeze through that tourney

Michigan-Villanova was a pretty tight matchup last night, both teams look dangerous, Jay Wright still sounds like a douche :obama

SDSU-Arizona later tonight, 4th time they've played in 3 years, both teams have looked underwhelming thus far, starts at 8

Louisville looked pretty damn good for 20 minutes tonight. Ohio State eventually pulled it within a respectable margin, didn't see much

Stanley Johnson looked really good tonight. Like, top 3 pick in the draft good. 6/9 3/4 from deep, 8 boards, 18 points in 26 minutes. active on the offensive glass, couple putbacks; it was his 3 point stoke that really stood out to me, completely in rhythm, drained 3 shots with defenders closing out on him, his first sailed on him -open look from the corner but he found the range pretty quickly after that

All it takes is one bad day of shooting.

One day of slipping.

One undercooked set of pizzas.

That Goddamned Saul Smith.

That Sonuvabitch Kemba Walker.

Just a few of the things that has lost UK a game over the years. N-O-T-H-I-N-G IS GUARANTEED IN THIS GAME.

Wait a second... Buffalo?!?! Made it to the NCAA?

Shows how much I follow basketball, either pro or college. I graduated from UB back in 2003 and when I was there, our sports teams were the laughing stock of the college.

But hey, that's still pretty cool that they made it.

UNC-Wiscy is turning out to be really good, Heels are rebounding really well on the offensive end, up a possession w/ 15 left

Kentucky using dem cheat codes on WV, they must have entered like ten of em on the matchup screen before tip off.

The double bonus 11 minutes into the half was pretty great. As was the ref getting tripped.

Great game, MSU came through in the clutch. Again.

Just a few weeks ago people were grumbling about Izzo losing his touch, how it might be time to retire etc. First MSU stormed through the Big Ten Tournament, now another run to the Elite 8...he always has the team ready for this time of year.

There was a moment when you could see the old "there's still a coach in there" Calipari who didn't just exploit the one-and-done system freaking out because one of the guys didn't even bother to grab the rebound instead just letting it hit the floor, and this Wisconsin dude cuts in suddenly from behind and grabs it and goes completely around the UK player for an easy layup and the UK guy just stood there baffled at the whole sequence of events and Calipari looked like he wanted to kick that stupid little stool into his bench's faces.

Sports media follows such a predictable, basic trajectory. Good cop v bad cop. One guy makes an utterly asinine argument, the other guy pushes back with the opposing view...and callers line up in droves. That's how it works. Skip is really good at what he does...but what he does isn't journalism or any logical take on sports. It's entertainment.

We definitely know that's how Duke gets top tier players, including how they got Okafor over MSU. I'm not aware of Big Ten teams that run questionable programs in regards to handlers. A lot of Wisconsin's best players were from inside the state, including their Mr. Basketball. Not saying Duke is as bad as Kentucky but let's be real, they cheat in recruiting too.

I'm just saying we don't know shit until well after the fact. No one thought of Syracuse or NC as dirty programs and yet they were doing dirty shit also. My opinion is that all programs are suspect.

Title: Re: March Madness Thread: Final Four
Post by: Phoenix Dark on April 07, 2015, 11:03:58 AM
To be fair how do you think they bagged Carmelo Anthony over bigger programs? How did NC put together arguably the best college team in recent memory a few years ago.

My problem is that Michigan got popped for this in the 90s yet it's far more prominent today, and the NCAA doesn't do shit because it would topple elite programs.

Same reason Alabama will probably never get popped in football. Dunno if you followed signing day this year but multiple SEC players got on twitter showing their new cash off...yet no investigations. Come on.

This whole conversation just goes to show that trying to hold one program up as clean is pointless- they're all doing it to one extent or another. If you don't believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you.  This is why people who try to claim college sports are somehow "more pure" than the pros and that "it's just kids out there, having fun!" are full of shit. GTFO with that nonsense. Shit is a business, you're just crying because Kentucky does business better than most or all.
Title: Re: March Madness Thread: Final Four
Post by: Phoenix Dark on April 07, 2015, 07:31:27 PM
Bo Ryan isn't cutting checks. Neither is Tom Izzo. Let's be real. Do they offer perks that probably aren't legal, like giving a kid a ride in an expensive car or "gifting" a PS4? Yea, sure. But that's quite different than literally stuffing thousands of dollars into a handler's bag.

Izzo has been very open about that shit. Which isn't surprising considering he lost due to players to Duke due to not playing the game. Jabari Parker and Okafor...

Then I noticed it's a sports radio talking point right now, which must be where they got it. scust...

Looking forward to Duke v NC.

It's the same old Izzo offense where it goes through stretches where it's god awful and the players move a few feet back and forth. Valentine looking for assists to pad his stats, so setting up pick and rolls, sometimes is the only thing that yanks them out of the funk. Plus playing guys who don't do anything but hustle. Or Seniors because they're Seniors.

Deyonta Davis is far and away the teams best player. There's no way he's the 240lb he's listed at though. Maybe 204.

early exit for Self again, but no shame in losing to this Villanova team. Syracuse and Dotre Name are gonna get curb stomped tomorrow. Is an elite 8 berth really an early exit for Self? Honestly I thought they'd go out earlier.

What a year for broken tropes. I expected MSU to go far (as always) and Nova to choke (as always).

you can make of it what you will

i personally think it is.

They were preseason top 4 with national title aspirations and the number 1 overall seed in the tournament. It's a disappointing early exit

It's a little weird seeing Villanova win. They usually have the last shot go in against them.

All them fake classes at UNC and they still got a pressure baked L. Good for them.
