I first was introduced to Cat Power through V for Vendetta. One of her songs is featured in the movie and it's brilliant.

Matador pushed that record HARD. They had adverts in the NYT mag, if I remember correctly. They also pushed it big time at Best Buy (A source of some controversy) and released a specially priced "BEST SELLER" edition for sale at larger retailers. Not to mention an overwhelmingly positive critical reception.
I don't have the sales numbers in front of me, but it's hard to remember a better managed push for an indie artist.

While I like Cat Power, the Decemberists clearly have more commercial appeal.
When, singer/songwritery chicks are back in vogue, sure, Cat Power on a major, now, not so much.
Also she will never be on a major because she isn't reliable.

Chan Marshall is prone to freaking out both on stage and off, resulting in canceled shows and even full tours.
The last time I saw Cat Power was at Sasquatch 2003. After performing three songs, Chan came out on stage and danced to a recording of a Smoosh song. Once the song was over, she ran off stage, never to return due to "emotional issues."

Cat Power is hit or miss. Some songs are great, others are pretty meh. Aimee Mann, as an example, is one of my favorite female vocalists, but even I can admit that her latest CDs have been a far cry from the Stellar Lost in Space and Bachelor #2.

Can't go wrong with that bunch. Actually, Major labor or not, some of Sarah Mclachlan's earlier work before Surfacing (like Solace or Fumbling Towards Ecstasy) is pretty respectable on a technical level. She is also one of the few female artists that sounds the same live as on her cd ;)

The new Cat Power is really good. Check it out. I'm not even sure she tried to tour it.

The Greatest? I tried it, didn't really stick. Seemed like the whole cd sorta carried the same note, I like a little more variety.

She's better about that now. She's sober, and her shows throughout the last year have received critical acclaim the world over. She's really doing great live, or so I hear.
Bitch has talent. I really don't think there's denying this. A sultry southern charm with a little bit of freaky pop dabbled around for good measure. I can listen to her lullabies for years.

I'm not sure Fiona wanted to be the next Fiona Apple, if you take my meaning. Basically, what you're saying is that you want her to be involved with a company that is capable of marketing her to more people but will no doubt fuck with her artistry to accomplish that. Ask Fiona how that went with her last album.

Fiona totally ruined her latest album. The demos were amazing, some of her best songs. The new tracks are mostly devoid of the emotion that that once drove them, and the production is completely dry. It sucks.

I think the raw emo emotion was replaced with technical variety, which I can respect. When the Pawn is still my favorite album, but Extraordinary Machine is by no means a 'bad' album.
Unless of course youre some distinguished mentally-challenged super-fan.

"Technical variety"? :lol The production is so very cheap.
By emotional, I did not imply emo. Emotion does drive good or sincere vocals. Emo is just some stupid guy singing like every other emo singer for sales, two totally different things.
She was actually singing in the unreleased version. Take "Oh Well" for example. One of her best songs... until she redid it, it's a terrible song now. Sounds like she doesn't even care about what she's singing.

I'm barely a Fiona fan, I just appreciate her talent sometimes, something her new album unfortunately ended up lacking. It's a good thing I still have the demos, I do listen to them every now and then.

Who gives a fuck?
Saw her live two and a half years ago. The set was pretty great until the end, when she began messing up all her songs and complaining about how talentless she was. It wasn't enough to ruin the evening.
