Title: Anyone Else Can't Get Into Handheld Gaming?
Post by: D3RANG3D on December 15, 2014, 07:49:45 PM
I can't for the life of me get into it doesn't matter what the platform is phones/tablets/dedicated handhelds.

Owned

Gameboy I actually used this alot but I was like nine or ten when I got it.

Gameboy color I got this on a whim didn't really use it.

Never owned a GBA until the Micro I actually liked this handheld but I sold it.

DS I actually used this somewhat but the touch screen shit turned me off to most games.

PSP never really used this sold it within a few weeks.

Rebought a PSP realized can't into handhelds and was like oh yeah that's why I sold these damn things in the first place.

Have an android device pretty much only use it for web browsing.

Except for the heyday of the GBA, I've never been able to either. I don't even bother now.

Mr. Gundam the thread :P

I have no problem with handheld gaming.  It has some advantages like portability, touch screens, dual-screens; while some disadvantages like no 5.1/7.1 theater sound, big screen, major horsepower, controls aren't as good for certain genre like dual analog games.

At this point, I'm not going to buy a portable nintendo or playstation system to game on. For those type of games, I'd rather just sit down in front of a console or PC and play games like that. I'm never in a situation where it makes sense for me to game on those type of systems when I'm at home. The reality is that I'll probably end up playing those games on some kind of emulator on a PC down the road where I can have save states and a more enjoyable experience for what I want out of it.

I do game on ipad, or iphones, but the problem there at least on the ipad is that there are so many distractions that, I'll often intend to game but end up just surfing the web or watching a movie or tv on the device instead.

Not really a fan, if I play I'll do something like the Game Boy Player or PSP with video out. Been playing the Mario Land games lately with Super Game Boy.

Handheld gaming has both pros and cons. I like having access to multiple types of platforms so I can adapt to the situation. Sleep mode is a blessing if you have a SO or kids competing for your attention.

What if there were portable VR goggles you could play Doom on?
Title: Re: Anyone Else Can't Into Handheld Gaming?

I never really could get into handheld gaming, until I got into mobile (ironically). It takes me back to my early PC days when I would download dozens of shareware games and play them for 20 minutes at a time. Then every once in awhile you would play something amazing that you would sink dozens of hours into. There's little risk (in terms of dollars/time), so the rewards don't have to be so great.

But traditional handheld gaming always felt like a gimped experience. Like drinking a non-alcoholic beer or something. Rpgs, SRPGS, platformers, action, etc always felt like it was missing something, even though you were spending 30-40 dollars for it.

as someone who has aged right on the socially acceptable bell curve of video games, the 3DS is the first time in my life that playing a nintendo handheld in public makes someone my age look like a weirdo.

I love portable systems.  I game on them a lot less than I did as a kid, but I still end up with pretty large portable libraries and enjoy gaming wherever.

When I was a kid, I used to walk around with a Gameboy holstered on my belt.    :-[

Damn straight. I just can't get into handheld gaming. I've got a DS, PSP and an iPhone. Playing anything on them is just absolute torture. I like playing games at home. I drive to work and when I'm out, gaming is the last thing on my mind.

That's the thing, if I'm home and have some free time I'd rather play a console game on my TV. Sitting at home with a handheld just bugs me. Total personal preference.

Now that im bouncing between two houses on the regular and have to game on the go most of the time portable gaming and iOS gaming are what I can do most of the time. I still carve out time for consoles/PC though- just has to be VERY deliberate.

For the OGB I'd highly recommend giving Donkey Kong '94, Final Fantasy Legend 2, Final Fantasy Adventure, and Gargoyle's Quest a shot, if you haven't yet. I'm about to beat Wario Land on my Super Game Boy and it's not too bad either, graphics are really nice and smooth for the platform.

I love it. I'm way more likely to play rpgs on my handhelds/phone because I can just stop it any time and pick it back up when I feel like it. My gaming habits can be really random, sometimes I'm in the mood to play for a few minutes and sometimes for hours. Having to sit through cutscenes or search for save points can become painful so I really appreciate sleep mode and save states.

For a while, most of my gaming was done on handhelds while my consoles were collecting dust (360) or primarily being used for Netflix (PS3)  :yeshrug

I can still beat Super C/Contra in about 10-15 that's assuming I would want to, if I can't stomach playing these games for more than a few minutes what makes you think I would play them for 30. :shaq2

I tried to transition my handheld gaming to my iPhone over the years but there's simply too much shit going on to even start a game up. I feel if I lived in a city with awesome public transportation then I would probably be all about iOS gaming but as it stands I need to drive my ass everywhere so any portable gaming I do is at home.

I don't have a TV in the bedroom so I usually pop my headphones on and play a game or two before I go to sleep either on my 3DS or phone. It's a good way to mellow out and you're already in bed so it makes it easy to fall asleep.

The Oculus stuff I’ve seen is interesting, but it’s never going to catch on because no-one is strapping one onto their head at home, AND the damned things make me motion sick.

Anyway, they address a a need which doesn’t exist, hence: CueCat.

Wouldn't increasing/decreasing Field of View help that? Seems like something Carmack would be looking into. What with his "see it and be a believer" hype.

Plus handheld gaming doesn't take up the TV so that other people can't use it. I guess that's an argument for the NVidia shield, steam streaming, and the WiiU pad.

I tend to play games when my wife is busy (still working, at the gym, sleeping) so that's not incentive to play handhelds. And besides, we've got TVs in the basement and main floor living room.

Casual Rock Band fans may like the Smule series of games. I'm digging them. Unfortunately there is no "buy this game" option, and the micropurchase bull feces is tiresome. At least the karaoke is free if you don't mind duets with strangers.

It doesn't. It uses actual dedicated hardware (Z80/8080-style 8bit CPU) that the original GB/GBC had.

What are you running it on? Original GBA? Maybe it's the screen refresh rate.

I am well aware of the GBA having the GB/GBC chipset, but on my GBA SP Castlevania seems to chug alot.
