Title: This Sony hack is pretty bonkers
Post by: Yeti on December 17, 2014, 05:50:02 PM
It's pretty crazy how thoroughly and completely Sony got hacked. It seems like there is new drama about it every day. So much gossip has been released. And I just heard they cancelled the premiere of "The Interview" over it? Wow.

yeah can anyone sum this shit up / have a good cumulative link to the leaks? :ohhh

Imagine emails saying "x movie sucks balls" or "x person is a distinguished mentally-challenged asshole" where x movie is every movie that Sony currently has in development and x person is everyone who's ever worked with Sony.

I cannot fucking believe this hack managed to get the movie cancelled.

That's fucking unbelievable.

A bunch of hackers from North Korea supported by Kim Jong Cheeselover got that shit done. THEY GOT IT DONE. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

How the fuck is that possible?

Well along with the hack, the group claiming responsibility also made terroristic threats against theaters that played the movie. So of course audience goers would be skittish against going, and theaters would be reluctant to play it.

yeah the theater threats did it in; not only would that be bad for the movie itself, but probably any other movie too.

FBI and reputable news is saying it was very likely NK hacker group Dark Seoul who hacked South Korea last year.  I know people like to make all these conspiracy theories, but sometimes (actually most of the time) the simplest answer is the right one.  NK's had beef with this film for a while and has asked for it to be cancelled several times before this.

yeah the theater threats did it in; not only would that be bad for the movie itself, but probably any other movie too.

Yeah, another studio already cancelled a quality drama thriller set in NK today that was in production.  (http://insidemovies.ew.com/2014/12/17/steve-carell-north-korea-set-movie-dropped/?hootPostID=222fb7ab0647209fb29cb10892565a27)

Terrorists won, world is changed into a shittier place again as what keeps happening post 9/11.

As long as no civilians are killed, this is all far, far more entertaining than the movie would be.

So the movie has been cancelled. Terrorists win. What happens if someone makes a movie about China or ISIS now? Cancel over threats?
Title: Re: This Sony hack is pretty bonkers

I predict record DVD and digital sales if they actually keep it out of theaters

So the movie has been cancelled. Terrorists win. What happens if someone makes a movie about China or ISIS now? Cancel over threats? This makes sony look even more weak.

Sony didn't have a choice but to cancel the current release when every major theater chain and digital distribution chain said they weren't going to carry it because they were afraid they'd get hacked or worse as well.

Sony's choices were pretty much:
1) Lose the 100 million spent on the film (44 million production costs + heavy marketing campaign) entirely to say fuck you terrorists and release it on torrents so all the world can see FREEDOM.

2) Sit on it until this cools down and hope they can sell it and make some of that money back either in theaters or on VoD at a later point.

They're still a company and money still matters over pride, so they went with #2.

If I were Sony I would pull it out of theatres. Then release digitally because fuck you. Instead, they let them win and have now set a horrible precedent for creativity. But then again NK is close to Japan, and japan likely treats Nk 1000000x more seriously than we do

Remember when they remade Red Dawn and they had to spend like a two years in post production changing all the references from China to North Korea? Now two stoners make a yuckemup and these clowns decided to get offended? For shame!

This is the best thing that could have possibly happened to this movie. When it's inevitably released (probably VOD or direct to disc), scores of people who previously had zero interest in it will buy/rent out of sheer curiosity. By accounts it isn't very good, but it could be absolute dogshit and will now probably end up making double what it would have without the controversy.

That said, this reaction isn't surprising in the least. We're a nation of pussies now. Every time something like this happens nowadays I think about Carlin's "Pussification of America" bit  from years ago and wish he were still alive to see it, because that was some Nostradamus-type prediction shit.

Wow, how is this sad at all? People ask for TV shows to get released on DVD all the time ("Living Single" is one of the greatest demanded unreleased shows from Warner Bros, for example.) This is literally a reasonable business email; you are just used to no one asking anything of you because you have nothing to offer in terms of help for anyone because you're just a sad sad pile of despair and unwashed socks.

there was a more than great chance that The Interview was going to underperform on its original release date.  Night at the Museum 3 would have curb stomped it anyway.  The multiplex schedule is about to become jam packed and they probably would have lost our anyway.

There's a chance I would be unemployable for the rest of my life if people saw how dickish I've been in some work emails. And I'm one of the nicer people you could hope to interact with in a work environment. Nothing I've read has been what I would consider out of the ordinary. Worst of it was the casual sexism/racism that exists universally in America, but if that rustles jimmies people should read office fantasy football chains. That Trebek email is exactly what he should have sent imo. Direct, honest, and assertive. I hate pussyfooting coworkers who hem and haw at everything.

And none of the information we've gotten has been surprising. Is any office filled with employees 100% on board with their company? Did anyone expect Sony Pictures dudes to be thrilled with Adam Sandler movies?

idk, outside of learning that Channing Tatum is literally a golden retriever puppy in the body of an adult man and some insider gossip, everything seems par for the course.

Eh, when it's inevitably released years from now people won't care.  No one is going to touch this for a long time for fear they'll also suffer a hack, and any attempts by Sony to release it will just mean more bad press for them.  This is just going to be a big 100 million disaster for Sony.

True story.
A certain company had a proclivity for their executives going apeshit. Let's call them "D company" or maybe "Ish Network". Anyhoo, in the early 2000s they decided to implement a system to stop any emails with inappropriate language and swearing to be sent. They bough the software but then leadership quickly noticed that their emails to internal employees were getting blocked because of inappropriate language. The vendor was like "The software is supposed to do that. That's why you bought it." This escalated to the point where the leadership from this company essentially called up the CEO of the vendor and demanded that they alter their software immediately to allow inappropriate language to be sent internally but block it externally or else. They ended up making the change.

Keep in mind, this was the same company where one of the executives sued the CEO for a large amount of money because he had called her a "cunt" in a board meeting then fired her on the spot. They settled, but it must've been in the millions. Delightful company.

Some speculation is that Sony is considering scrapping the whole thing and collecting insurance on it, which they wouldn't be able to do if they did a VOD release. I still think they just shelve it for a while, and release it after everything's cooled down.

I'd be all for them collecting insurance (though usually insurance for stuff bars acts of god and terrorism and I think this would fall under the latter; plus Sony has ZERO luck in the courts lately so yeah, I don't think they'll collect) and secretly leaking the film to torrents.

Boo on NK for letting Sony off easy. I hope that sometime in the future Kim forces Sony to make an NK propaganda film headed by a world famous director. That would be the most awesome thing ever.

DPRK should kidnap David Fincher and force him to make a Seven remake about the sins of capitalism.

Oh my God, NK pussyed out.
LAME!

“They’re pretty stable networks normally,” Madory said. “In the last 24 hours or so, the networks in North Korea are under some kind of duress, but I can’t tell you exactly what’s causing it.” Possible reasons include an attack by another nation or third-party hackers, he said, but also things like power outages and network maintenance. “There’s no way to confirm that these outages are the result of an attack, but given the timing, it’s something we have to consider,” he said.

I guess stuff from the Sony hack got posted to wikileaks recently. I haven't read too much about it, but I thought these emails regarding the Spider-Man movies were pretty funny
