For me personally, it's been pretty kick ass.  The first half of the decade has been an exercise in digging myself out a hole that was dug for me and that I dug myself in for the first 25 years of my life and I'm starting to get to where I want to be.  Debt free, good job, currently going to graduate school, living well, and basically doing what I want to do.  Aside from getting passed over for a promotion recently, I don't have much to complain about.

Conversely, 10 years ago, I wanted to kill myself every day, I worked two jobs and still was in debt.  When I wasn't working crazy hours, I did shitty in school, doing just barely well enough to avoid academic probation.  Parents were stealing money from me, women wanted nothing to do with me, and in spite of being in the greatest generation of video games ever (PS2-XB-GC era), I was too broke to get all the games I wanted to play.  Oh and I spent a shitload of time on GAF but to be honest, pre-NeoGAF GAF was a pretty good board.

A lot's changed :win

2011-2014 = halfway over  ???

I'm pretty sure there were more Steam sales 2010-2014 than in all of human history prior so....

Pretty good. Lot of ups than downs. Lot of personal growth. Then again the 2000-2009 were rock bottom so anything is better.

I would have just assumed your comprehension of time was at some other level from the rest of us and that "The Tens" actually refers to ten distinct years over all of existence that you're musing about from the Vanishing Point.

As a decade and only being halfway through it, I think it’s heading in a good direction despite what most of the media is focusing on. We’re moving in a direction that is positive overall, with advances in health and improvement worldwide in survivability. Despite cat pictures and misattributed quotes, the Internet continues to improve our ability to democratize information and make processes more visible and transparent.

For me personally, it's been five years of digging myself out of the hole I fell into over the course of 2007-09.

I dug myself out of the hole then fell back in.

I am always sad that we don’t have the jetpacks and flying cars, but then I watch how people conduct themselves with vehicles incapable of vertical movement, and I realize we’re better off.

Your gripe is more valid.

The argument against self-driving cars where people are like "BUT WHAT IF THE CARS MALFUNCTIONS AND WRECKS?!?!?!" is really hilarious to me. It's like, dude, have you ever seen a human being drive a car before?

The funny thing is that the people I know who subscribe to that theory were the same ones who believed the auto-accelerating when brakes were pressed garbage. So nothing would change in their worse case scenario if both sets of statements are true.

The self driving cars get really interesting when they have to make decisions during unavoidable accidents. There'll have to be a part of the algorithm that makes a decision about which car it would rather crash into. The family van or the sedan, for instance.

Let's see.

2010: Overall pretty awesome for the most part. Didn't finish the year off as wonderfully but still good. Had the best summer in a long, long time.
2011: Nothing special. Some highs, some lows, but nothing stellar either way.
2012: Pretty awesome.
2013: Pretty average.
2014: Pretty shitty.

So far, a huge meh/5.

i don't really understand how you can argue for/against "self-driving cars" in the abstract in this sort of way??? i mean, a given implementation might be reliable, or it might not. presumably the implementations that exist now are not yet reliable/robust enough to market???
