Nostalgia thread.
Back when you didn't scour the internet and gaming rags for all the info of a game. When you jumped in on a game because the back of the box screenshots looked cool? Or the cover art made it seem grander than it was?

This game came out shortly after the original Zelda. So, I was under the asssumption that it would be equally magnificent. Just look at that art.
-
Yep, more like then 1 likely.
Will never forget Heimdall 2, prob a great game even but I was too young to get it

I had some Christmas money and was looking thru Kmarts paltry selection for something to blow it on. ended up grabbing Super R-Type because of the giant alien on the cover. man, what a fucking disappointment that was. core game wasn't bad, but it moved sooooo damn slow, and the port was notorious for having zero checkpoints. like even if you died at a boss, you'd get kicked all the way to the start of the stage, where it'd take like 10+ min to get back where you died. never went in blind for another game again.
-
This game, of course

I don't think I've ever impulse bought a non-digital game.
-
feck u child
-
If it's any consolation I've probably bought an equal amount of shitty games, I was just either too stupidly hopeful (like Sonic Unleashed) or well aware of the shittiness (like... actually I can't think of an example.)
-
Buying games in the age of the internet doesnt count

That Rainbow Six one worked for me. I saw Tom Clancy followed by ACTION and STRATEGY and that was all I needed.

I loved those Manhunter games. The art and music did a great job in creating atmosphere.

Thexder on Apple IIGS was the first game I ever bought based on the box
Man Hunter New York was the tits too. In retrospect that game is god damn awful

Yeah as a kid they tapped into pretty much everything I was into at that age.

When I was a kid I used to spend a lot of time at KB Toys and staring at the game boxes. Back then I didn't have access to the internet and the only resource was video game magazines. I remember seeing this box and didn't know anything about the game. The stark white background with the metallic red letters, the actual title itself, they really made me want to know what the game was.
Ended up convincing my mom to buy it for me.

But seriously.

Who knew there were bad fighters at the height of SF/MK/SS popularity?!? I bought too many dumb fighters for like a year period.
Though that MMPR fighter isn't that bad and I would assume is the only halfway decent game for that franchise. The dumb thing is that they picked like some of the worst monsters from the show to fight and I think there were like seven or eight total fighters and they all moved like Zords even if they were just giant-sized "people" or whatever.
But I think I did too much game magazine checking to get suckered too many times with stuff in general, especially PC which was notorious for box lies, and especially after I figured out GameFan's deal. I think that MMPR fighter had like no reviews in popular magazines though.

This game, of course

Sure you don't mean the sequel? Because who could resist the charms of Fabio...

Oh man, Benji's post reminded me of the SNES era.
I think every game I owned applies to this topic. Zelda: LTTP, Megaman X, Battletoads, that (Burton) Batman brawler, Mario Paint, the Tiny Toons game, Mario Kart, Mario All-Stars, SF2 Turbo... That might have been all, actually. :lol
-
Thread should be nothing but NES games.

the cover oozed testosterone

That one had the OPPOSITE effect on me.
Like who the hell is this crotchety motherfucker on the cover and why do I want to buy a game about banjos?
-
Legacy of the Ancients was the first PC game I ever bought for myself (with birthday money). Also, one of the first PC RPG's I ever played. It was hard to ever go back to console RPG's after playing this game and the other games it opened me up to (the Gold Box games, Bard's Tale, Wizardry)

This is my Monolith post 'cause those fuckers got me not only once but TWICE.

yea, I have distinct memories of going to video rental places and always skipping over that title because of the cover. I might have looked at the back of the box once.
-
Oldskool Konami games had the best box art... and a lot of them were amazing games too. I bought/rented a lot of these but I dunno if that was because of the box art or because of Konami's rep:

But occasionally you'd get the stinker. I loved this boxart when I was little... the game, (starring what looks like a redneck Danny Tenaglia) not so much:

I was like "Oh man, this is so rad, you make mazes and put dragons and trolls and stuff in them, this is gonna be sweet!" I never could figure out how to make anything with it.

I must be the only other person on earth who loves that boxart. it's fucking hilarious to me. still always passed over it at blockbuster, but man was I tempted.
-
Oh yeah, most recently I bought this game. Awesome boxart and great name... finally played it today along with my friends and we all unanimously agreed this game was horrible. Like, nearly ET level bad. It's by Ultra (and developed by Rare) so you'd think it would be good... but nope. The game seems like it'd be an RPG or something, with an unreadable italic font, and menu-based towns and world map/ship travel... but the world map and ship move sooooo slow. And combat is laughably bad, just 2 really tiny ships circling around each other occasionally firing cannons. Didn't make much sense at all.

So, a shitty copy of Sid Meier's Pirates?
-
Does buying a Gold Box game because it was a Gold Box game count? If I saw a Gold Box game I'd just automatically buy it. Some of them had pretty cool D&D art, too, IIRC. I probably learned to manipulate myself while male gazing at the Death Knights of Krynn box art.

back when i used to get fooled by fmv backdrop rail shooters (looking at you megarace). game was :trash
there other ones i cant remember but those stick out the most. I assume pretty much every NES game I bought was based off cover art.
oh yeah this one
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c0/Super_Ninja_Boy_box_art.jpg)
all i can remember it was kinda weird and a slog to get through as you'd run into enemy mobs constantly.
-
o yeah I remember renting gunstar heroes because the character on the front looked like my brother. that ended up working out bretty gud.
-
the only one i can think of, must've been 5 or 6. also the first videogame i owned. what a wonderful day.

To this day, nothing comes even close to how much this cover stimulated my imagination as a kid. I think I came up with an epic backstory full of betrayal and heroism, which was still burned in my brain when this is what I ended up with:
