I think it's a risk because I'm not sure if where I'm going to stay when I move will allow cats. I'll definitely try to stay at a place that allows them, though.
I've always wanted a cat but couldn't because of being away for school or whatever, and in the past few years, having a dog. But dammit, I want a kitty. :heartbeat
I'm not sure if adopting a cat now is wise, because as I said, I'm moving. Thoughts? I know a lot of cats don't mix will with moving, especially out of state.
I'm looking at getting a single cat, and with hope it will make good friends with my dog. That sounds naive, I know, but I was hoping she'd have a playmate while at work, and I don't want another dog. I want a cat!
I'm looking at black cat breeds such as the bombay because black cats take up a lot of space in adoption places and a lot of people don't take em because of stupid superstition and they end up being euthanized. Bombay's in particular look adorable and seem smart and friendly too!

Look at how that cat likes being brushed - cute!

If you want a cat, get a cat. If you already have a dog chances are the place you're going to pick to move too will allow both if either.

My cat
(http://i.imgur.com/PNrUFUCl.jpg)
She plays fetch and is socially awkward as fuck. Not high maintenance. I used to have two cats since I was taking care of them for my brother, who moved to Boston for college. He wound up taking one and leaving me the other. I was afraid she'd be sad after losing her buddy but she's fine.
Her favorite pass time is fetching plastic bottle caps.

:heartbeat :heartbeat :heartbeat
Cute cat!
How'd she learn how to play fetch?
-
Yes, cats are rad
-
bombays are great, so are tuxedo cats.
if a cat grows up from kittenhood knowing your dog they'll probably get along, if you try to introduce a grown cat to your dog they probably won't. which is too bad as grown cats are the ones who really need to be adopted ...
-
As a first time owner of a pet (by myself), I 'll say that having a cat is probably a good idea (and they're not that hard to take of either, just make sure you don't leave things you don't them to get into out)
-
I would wait until you move. Moving can be traumatic for cats, unlike dogs, who don't seem to really give a shit -at least from my experience- we've had our dog for two years and moved three times already, and she's never had a problem adjusting. Made a big move with the family dog when I was a kid and that dog also had no problems. But it was different with cats. YMMV though. A former co-worker has moved all around the country over the past six months, with two cats, and they're doing fine.
I know you have a dog, but you still may want to consider getting at least two cats so they can keep each company...there's always going to be those times where you go out with the dog and the cat is cooped up all alone.

She follows me everywhere and sometimes does things I don't want her to do - specifically if I'm watching tv she'll mess with the chords/wires/etc. So I started throwing her mouse toy across the room as a means of getting her to leave the chords alone; she'd chase after it and forget the chords. And after awhile she started bringing the toy back to me lol. Plastic bottle caps are her favorite.

Just about to say this.
Obv. the best thing to do would be to adopt a great adult cat, but in your situation you have a dispensation to get little wittle kitten.
-
Another thing my cat loves: the laser pointer. I can tell it completely rustles her jimmies. The best way to do it: play with her using her toys first, let her "catch" everything. Then crush her confidence by busting out the laser, pointing at the ceilings/walls, or letting her chase the dot on the floor.
-
I don't want to get a kitten. There are so many ignored and abandoned adult cats that don't get love. Plus I'm not sure I could handle a kitten.
What are the positives of a kitten?

You mean living with my dog, right?
I'm not sure I'm going to take my dog with me when I move. I may get settled and then have her shipped. I'm not sure.

Fuck the adults. They aren't your problem. Chances are there will be tons of fucking kittens at the same shelters anyway, and ignored babies are probably much sadder than ignored adults.
The cuteness is reason enough. They little meows they make are adorable.

Take the dog with you.

I think kittens are overrated. When there was a kitten in our family I always wanted them to just grow up already. Cats are cool.
-
Cats for renters are only ever a hindrance. Within the scope of your plans, you’re not sure where you’ll live or what you’ll be doing for work, and when you’re animating for a studio, you can bet you’ll have overtime.
Cats are independent and aren’t subject to human/animal alpha relationships -- you won’t ever “own” a cat. Why not just enjoy someone else’s cat?
-
The stay at the studio for overtime thing is exactly why I want a cat and why I'm considering giving my dog away to a farm. Technically, it's not my dog. It's my dad's dog, but she came to like me more, so it suddenly became my dog. My parents do not really take care of it. I'm the one who bathes, feeds, and walks it. Ultimately, while I love dogs, I don't like actually owning one. I'm not really a dog owner person and the amount of time and effort one must put into a dog is stupidly ridiculous especially for a high energy breed like mine. For that and many reasons, I simply do not think my dog is fit for Hollywood life. Especially if I end up living by myself and not rooming with someone.
On the other hand, an old housemate had a cat. I love cats, and while I may not like owning dogs, I like having a cat around. Their independence is a part of their allure. I don't have to worry about getting home to let the cat out like I do with a dog, and the cat doesn't go insane or neurotic if I'm gone for x amount of time or require two walks a day to be a functioning mammal. With my roomies cat, it was smooth sailing, and he provided us comfort without being too needy.
Fucking hate owning dogs and I don't think she will be able to handle it if im working for a studio for 12-14 hours.
As for not really "owning" a cat, I don't want to own an animal to begin with, which is the allure of the cat, because you can't own them. I just want a companion.
-
I’ve also been working on a theory that people who like cats actually crave attention from impossibly aloof and independent types, or possibly narcissistic types.
I don’t know you, and I am not theorizing about you, I’m theorizing about myself and every other “cat person” I’ve met. I have noticed that as I have grown older, mentally healthier, and hopefully a little wiser, that my fascination with cats has waned. Oddly, it has apparently made me more attractive to cats.

:|
That poor dog.
Cats need attention too. Don't get a cat if you're not going to home enough for him/her.
-
That poor dog? How is giving a high energy high maintenance dog to a farm bad for it? 21st century living must be boring as fuck for big ass dogs like mine that weren't bred for domesticated "waiting for master to get home" but for helping out on a farm as a job. Which is a large criticism I have towards dog people. They tend to treat their dogs like they are humans. If you think a dog sitting around waiting around for their pack to get home is a good thing, I don't know what to say. As for giving attention, I give my dogs lots of attention, but it's more attention than I will be able to bear when I'm trying to hack it in Tinseltown.
Chrono: I don't think so. In my experience, cat people tend to be open-minded about things. I respect that the cat doesn't need me to exist. I respect that the cat isn't needy or needs to be walked twice a day or they'll become depressed. I'm open-minded and appreciate all sorts of animals, including dogs. On the other hand, dog people, from my experience are far more narcissistic and controlling. They often cite they don't like cats because they can't control them, or can't teach them tricks. "Cats don't love you, they only want food." As if they expect human love to translate to an animal. Expecting an animal to love you just because you feed is narcissism if there's a description for it. One time, the dog wouldn't go outside so my dad pushed her outside while it was raining. In my experience, if dog people can't control it, they lose their shit, because they want to control everything the dog does. This isn't indicative of all dog people, because I've met and know a lot of open-minded dog people. But it definitely is a large part of my experience. On the other hand, cat people tend to be people who just let things be. Who cares if cats are independent, and aren't subject to alpha relationships? How does that make them a bad pet?
For evidence, I, a cat person, am willing to let cats stay with my dog. You, a dog person, came in and just pooped on cats. Dog people are far more passionate towards their dislike of cats than cat people are towards dogs. Cat people are definitely more open-minded people, in my experience.

OMG! Cute cat! Especially as a kitten! Love his pink paw pads!

if you're thinking about getting rid of your dog, you may not be able to handle a cat. different challenges. i don't know what kind of dog you have, though.
i don't think the complex psychoanalysis of dog people and cat people is warranted. it sounds like you're talking yourself into the idea. some people grew up with dogs instead of cats, or vice versa. some people aren't meant for pets.
not judging, but i'd be a little wary.
neither a cat person nor a dog person. i love both.

I don't think psychoanalysis of either is required either. Chrono is the one who brought it up anyways. I personally don't care for dog people vs cat people discussions. They tend to be far reaching and narrow minded. I was just responding to Chrono's post.
I enjoy both as well. I just don't like owning my dog. It's an American Bulldog-Boxer mix and it's a handful. I have trained and taken care of it myself. It's fine, and I've gotten the dog in control, but I dislike the lack of freedom the dog gives me. It's stressful as fuck. Can't do anything late on a weekend because I've gotta let the dog out. I have to walk that dog twice a day to expend its energy or she turns into a spastic depressed asshole. I think a dog like this is much more happy living on a farm, and being active rather than waiting for me to sometimes get home after 12 hour work days like I do now.
I've taken care of cats with my past roommate, and they are not nearly as time consuming as this dog, or any dog I've ever had. This is my fifth dog, by the way, and saying dogs and cats have different challenges but similar amounts of work is pretty much false in my experience.
Honestly didn't want to have any dog vs cat shit in this thread, and highly disappointed it was brought up to begin with.
-
I applaude those who adopt an adult cat, but kittens are always great. Because their insanely adorable but also because you get to mold them at least to a degree. Not as much as a dog but my kitten got a lot of love and grew up to be the sweetest cat ever. A true bro and snuggly buddy, never standoffish or mean. Grown cats can already be set in their ways.
-
a bulldog-boxer mix sounds charming.
bulldogs usually aren't high energy dogs, but boxers can be demanding.
if you decide to find a new home for it, i hope you find the best one you can.
-
Prediction: cats suck, hamsters are the greatest thread withing 12 months.

I like to refer to myself as a “recovering cat person,” and have never been a dog person. I mean, I /really/ used to like cats. Now I think they’re still okay, I just am not fascinated by them. My theories probably tell you more about me than about any kind of objective reality.

Cats cats cats cats cats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This has been said enough times already, but still: don't get the cat/kitten until you have settled into your new place. Most cats are at least as dependent on their area as they are own their owner (also known as feeding person). The cat might really struggle to fit into it's new surroundings if you move with it and probably might even run away.
-
The only reason to ever own a cat is rodent control.
-
My ultimate suggestion is to get a kitten now, ditch it at a shelter before you move so it's not a hindrance when moving, and then get a new kitten when you do find a place accepting. This way you get to experience 2 kittens. There are fucking plenty to go around. It's not like these kittens are custom made for you whenever you ask for one--they're going to exist anyway so it's not like you're offensively wasting a kitten's life or kittenhood. Why not just get a cute and new one if you have a clear and rational opportunity to?
-
That poor dog? How is giving a high energy high maintenance dog to a farm bad for it?
You took the dog from one home and are now talking about 'ditching' him and putting him somewhere else. I.E., poor dog. :(
But obviously you're just doing what you think is better for him.
Which is a large criticism I have towards dog people. They tend to treat their dogs like they are humans. If you think a dog sitting around waiting around for their pack to get home is a good thing, I don't know what to say.
I don't...which is why my parents take care of our dog when we go to work. It's pretty awesome since the dog gets tons of attention and is walked multiple times a day that way.
As for giving attention, I give my dogs lots of attention, but it's more attention than I will be able to bear when I'm trying to hack it in Tinseltown.
OK...seems like you should probably put having a pet on the backburner for a while until you get settled. Cats don't need to be walked but they still need plenty of attention. If you're still going to get a cat, I can't say enough how much better it would be for you to get at least two so they can keep each other company.
-
Lyte, I didn't pick that dog from a shelter. My dad did. I wanted a cat. My dad did not include my mother in the dog adoption process, and he ignored my preference for cats. Still, it's pretty much his dog. We have had the dog for years.
I'm not sure why or how you garnered that I'm not giving my dog plenty of attention. The problem is that due to its mix, the dog is highly demanding and I'm literally doing it all by myself when it is a dog that requires a family effort. I walk that dog twice daily, play with it daily, and she's my chill out buddy. She is always with me when I'm home. So I don't know where you're getting that I'm not paying attention to my dog but it takes out least three-four hours of my time on a daily basis.

Cats are sentient beings and should be treated as such. Buying a kitten and then dumping it sounds like it is treating it like a toy.

Bork is Lyte Edge? I didn't know! This is the biggest revelation since Snorenado being Abrader!
Pets are toys. Don't pretend they'd be sticking around if they'd decide to hang out with us if they had all the faculties nature had originally provided them. We've systematically programmed them to chill with us. There are an overabundance of kittens. No one cares if you cast one aside once you are done with it, especially if you have moving as an excuse. Moving is probably the single best excuse to dispose of unwanted pets, outside of them going rabid or something.

weren't you gonna drink yourself to death? probably should get on that.

she isn't as huge as a regular maine coon, but she's like twice the size of my other tabby cat. she can kinda get in the way pretty easy.

I just saw a dead kitten on the side of the road about 2 hours ago :( It wasn't a kitten kitten, but like, adolescent. I also saw a family of raccoons (I think). There was one big one and 4 or 5 small ones. On the same back road I saw a bigass dog. Do we have wolves around here? Because it looked wild. It was big and looked wolfy.
