Anyone else have experience with this?
I listened to Tegan and Sara's Heartthrob when it came out and didn't find it impressive at all. I forgot about it, and didn't bother checking out their other stuff. Last night I we were driving and Tegan and Sara popped up on the electronic Sirius FM station Chill, and the song is amaze. So when I get home I decide to give them another shot. I'm listened to it, and I'm like "this is pretty solid even if generic" so I'm going through their whole discog and it appeals to me a lot more than Heartthrob. Seems like a a duo that'd be rad for a live show.
It's just funny how our thoughts and impressions of artistic works can change over the years depending on how tastes shift or we're in a different place in life. I really appreciate this with music especially.

Albums I didn't like initially that are now among my favorites :
Spleen and Ideal, Obscura, Reasonable Doubt, Blessed are the Sick, XXX Pawn Hearts, Liquid Swords, The Diary, it goes on and on and on. Generally i find that the stuff I end up liking the best is the stuff I'm initially like damn "7/10 but interesting"
I'm similar. I didn't get Kid A and a bunch of stuff like A Night At the Opera but they slowly grew on me and became a favorites. Sometimes I just need a few more spins and get absorbed into the album, which more than one listen requires.

t&s earlier stuff is better songwriting i guess but the production/arrangement in heartthrob is god tier :rejoice

Throbbing Gristle. Based on the things written about them, I expected a total noise assault. They're actually far more nuanced than that, although they are as confrontational as their reputation suggests.

This is exactly what happened to me when I first heard Operation Doomsday years ago. Wasn't really listening to the lyrics but thought the beats were nice until I gave it more spins and it clicked that Doom was actually rhyming his ass off with one of the most unique styles hip-hop had ever seen.

Yea DOOM is the king of that shit. First time I heard Mm...Food ages ago I thought it was half interesting. But once the click came I was like fffffuuuuu. The awesome thing is that with DOOM you're constantly discovering what he meant with certain lines or similes. I got my brother into DOOM last year, and at one point we were watching some TV program about old television stars. There was a brief mention of Sally Struthers and the charity work she's done, and my brother was like "HE CAME TO FEED THE CHILDREN LIKE SALLY STRUTHERS! Oh shit!"

stuff that hits me on first listen is few and far between, so pretty much every album I've ever enjoyed
especially anything delicately/intricately/subtly produced; agreed 100% on the RD mention

Reasonable Doubt is a pretty standard 90s east coast album, I don't really see it not clicking early. It's not something "different" or left like 36 Chambers was at the time, or No Need For Alarm was for the west coast. It's an east coast mafioso record.

Rap. Didn't like it until listening to Public Enemy like 2 months ago. Listening to Straight out of Compton right this second.
The N word still makes me uncomfortable though.

Similar to what PD was talking about, but because I'm not American my issues grasping rap lyrics were far more common than just obscure left-field stuff like DOOM. Like what the fuck do you mean "you blew a nicca with a ox for the phone piece" ???
Thankfully Nas seems to be spending his time annotating his lyrics on rapgenius these days so no child need suffer like I did. :-[

Reasonable Doubt took me a while as well. My first Jay-Z album was The Blueprint and the soulful sound of that was more accessible to me than the more jazzy sound of Reasonable Doubt. At least that was how I felt about it at first, it feels like a pretty catchy record these days. Maybe it's a thing of listening modern and older records back to back, older albums are often less loud which gives em less appeal in a direct comparison.
