Sort of a side note but I think this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpBH4OaTSHY&t=20m55s) is one of the best dismissals of knee jerk Tolkien imitation, and a fascinating tip on writing in general; his entire 4 minute spiel. Write what you know. The whole video is cool if you're into nerdy shit.
