Title: The Radio Shack Thread Of Remembrance
Post by: sarslip on February 05, 2015, 07:14:55 PM
My friend bought a Tandy there, which we played  Leisure Suit Larry games on.

One time I needed a specific audio cable, and the Radio Shack guy told me which one to get, and I got it, took it home, and it was the wrong one.   :fbm

Another time I bought batteries, and then gave them my phone number.   :phil

Also that run of Howie Long, Terri Hatcher ads? eh,.... ehh?   :lawd

RIP Radio Shack

I never thought they'd die. It's like, how'd they last this long? Where will I go when I need a random tech gadget out of the blue now?

Last time I was in one they didn't even have a wall of random stuff you have no idea what they're for (let alone the earlier whole section), it was like two drawers in the back corner. 95% of the store was phone displays or accessories.

Spent a year working retail at a store. They straight up lied about it being a non-commission based job, instead they actively cut your hours if you weren't good at persuading every single person who walked through to door to leave with a new cellphone in their hands (and of course, gave heavy "incentives" for doing so). Mobile / accessories were pretty much the whole business.

Aside from that, they were a fairly generic electronic store where everything was 30% more expensive than the store right next to ours because RS included the price to ship stuff to PR into the RRP (6ft auxiliary cables for ten dollars) . The only annoying part of having those stores close will be actually finding those small spare electronic parts that they kept in the shelf drawers in the back. THOSE kinds of stores are really scarce here.

Last thing I ever bought from Radio Shack were wireless rear channel speakers...they were complete garbage.

If RadioShack had one of those movie trailers where they show quotes like "INCREDIBLE" "THIS MOVIE MADE MY COLD SORES ACTIVATE" this would be the first one.

Last time I stepped into one was in the last 90s to pick up some computer cable. They insisted I give them my name and number and address so I could buy it. I left it on the counter and walked out.

What's mind boggling to me is that they have 4000 stores in the US.

They were probably shocked to find out too.

I saw in a story that they had eleven consecutive quarters of heavy losses. :lol I'm surprised they lasted that long since I thought they were having serious financial issues a few years before that.

I did. But it was $10-15. Figured $1 per foot was worth it. But this was back in '04-'05 for HaloLANs. Totally worth it. :fbm

My last visit was to purchase a coaxial cable. Usually I buy stuff like that online but I had to replace a damaged one ASAP in this case. I picked up the cord and as I was walking towards the cashier I got a call; whipped out my phone, handled my business, and hung up. The cashier then proceeded to spend 5 minutes trying to sell me various iPhone accessories. Eventually I straight up told him I respected his hustle but breh, let me breath. Shortly thereafter I realized the manager had been hovering around behind me the entire time, which made me feel bad for the cashier. He was just doing his job.

This is horrible only because one of the greatest Onion articles (http://www.theonion.com/articles/even-ceo-cant-figure-out-how-radioshack-still-in-b,2190/) is no longer as relevant.

More like once again prescient. Events have been bearing down and overtaking The Onion in increasing fashion.
