I was in the quake 3 camp during prime ut99 times.  any time spent playing it was after the fact.  therefore, ut2k4 wins by default.

Probably because it's pretty weak. Even the "Black" edition fixes aren't really enough to put it on the level of UT 99/2004.

I mean they had the whole "consolized UT" thing down with Unreal Championship/2003. I'm not sure why they slowed it down even further.

I never got into 99 as I was a Quake/ID fan.  But 2k4 got me by the balls.  Played the hell out of that game with my buddy.  Probably like 300 hours logged.  Onslaught mode was f'ing amazing!

The maps alone disqualify it from competing against UT. YOU HEARD ME.

Had the better Dreamcast version though, even with the shitty player count. Like half the maps in UT would run at 5fps. Q3A felt butter smooth even over 56k. (When you got a good connection anyway.)

Now granted, map makers filled in a lot of UT's weak map line-up but the same could be said for Q3A. The base maps though... I dunno. I think Quake 3 Arena has far more solid with a few stupid designs than UT.

I don't play FPS anymore so I went with the Atlus option. But back in the day we played a helluva lot of UT99, its still my favorite FPS ever. Really like UT2k4 but by the time that came out, the friends I played '99 with moved away from gaming, so I didn't play nearly as much. Then after last gen I just got sick of the genre (and most modern games).
