http://oscar.go.com/nominees

Best Picture:

Quote
American Sniper

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)

Boyhood

The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Imitation Game

Selma

The Theory of Everything

Whiplash

Any predictions?

I'm going with Boyhood for best picture, Bradley Cooper for actor, Julianne Moore for actress.

i'm okay with a jingoistic murderfest as long as it's a little stylish and doesnt take it too seriously but AmeriKKKan Minuteman just isn't that movie. honestly sat through the whole thing bored.

I am extremely glad I've cultivated a public persona of complete apathy wrt pop culture because every time a cac starts to pressure me to see American LDSK they stop themselves halfway through the spiel and go, "oh that's right, you don't go to the movies." :whew

I bet The Theory of Imitation Game British movie will sweep the Oscars. Oscar voters love that jazz.

Julianne Moore should win just as a 'lifetime achievement' for all her previous work.

Out of the best picture noms I would have to root for Whiplash. What a great film. Nightcrawler was probably but favorite of the year but not up there.  :( Gylenthall at least deserved a nod (yes, I don't know how to spell his name).

(http://i.imgur.com/2sbd10Q.png) pls karakand, i did not pay to go to see this movie nor are any of my friends the kind of wastemen that would request that of me. It's just that I can only tolerate so many thinkpieces about something in my news feed before I'm mentally forced to subject myself to it.

May the sadhus lead you to pop culture moksha. (http://i.imgur.com/EksT61J.png)

yeah, Whiplash is the best of last year.  I like half the movies nominated for best picture, better than usual I think.  JK Simmons winning would be cool, and Interstellar for visual effects for all the practical effects.

and that website isn't telling me who is hosting it.

Whiplash imo is like a plain looking version of Black Swan.

hey, you know what movie totally didn't deserve to get Best Director/Actor/Screenplay noms...
Foxcatcher.  Carell isn't even close to being the lead and he's got nominated for it, what?  Bennett Miller hogs a directing nomination despite the film not getting a best picture nod, double what??

Ruffalo getting a nod, I can get behind that.  He's way past due and he was great in it, but the film itself keeps ignoring a more interesting reality to tell a blander fiction of the story its based on.  Also, the film itself, its not bad, but I didn't think it was worth that many accolades (would have liked to see Timothy Spall get a nom for Mr. Turner instead).

okay, enough kvetching.  It will be awfully nice to see J.K. Simmons pick up an Oscar.  That's freaking great in fact.  Hope to see Isao Takahata get an Oscar, he won't but he also won't ever get another chance, so I'd like to be surprised.

Are we really going to pretend like I don't affect traits assigned to gay men stereotypically? :gurl

PD would be talking about BBC and I would be throwing shade on the embarrassing sartorial decisions made by the red carpeters and then we'd shift into talking about something macho like ballet. It would ttly fux with the homophobes. :lawd

Just powered through this on my dvr. Really enjoyed all the musical performances, everything else was flat. NPH wasn't horrible, but he wasn't good either. That's his writers fault tho.

Only speeches I enjoyed were Arquette and Common. Never thought id say that.

Don't really care about the oscars anymore honestly as I think they tend to do a pretty bad job like most awards show. I find myself glad certain things didn't win versus being happy for the things that did win.  :yeshrug

Ralph Fiennes got robbed for not even getting a nom, real talk
Title: Re: The Oscars Are This Sunday
Post by: Phoenix Dark on February 23, 2015, 12:33:59 PM
It's all about politics. Who owes what, whose "turn" it is to win, etc. Sometimes it's simply which film made the most money. Hence why I don't understand why people get so worked up over awards. People like Kanye crying over this shit just blows my mind. Who cares.

And a special big L goes to Selma fans who want to act like the film not getting nominated=racism. Lots of films get snubbed all the time, fuckouttahere. If you want to talk about racism in Hollywood let's talk about how the only black films that get nominated are either about slavery or Civil Rights. And usually with a white actor playing the role of savior.

....that being said, shout outs to Common for this

I'll give Oprah some dap. Back when I was homeschooled my mom would watch her show religiously at 4PM every weekday, so for that hour I got to dick around and not do any work.

My mom would do the exact opposite: she'd only demand we watch the most depressing shit. She made us watch one of those dudes-getting-raped/molested eps and then be like "fellas, if you get molested you tell someone, you understand? Don't let it eat at you forever."
:dead

One of the GOAT quotes from my mom: "you didn't know boys could get raped, did you?"

She mentioned in a weak apology tweet later that she didn't know what it meant. Her co-anchor definitely did, though.

I did the one thing I'm sure the industry wanted me to do. I went out and bought Birdman today. Just watched it and I can easily see why this won, and I think it deserved it! Such a great movie, one I wasn't expecting to like, but the performances and unique filming style really sold me on it.

As for the Oscar I watched it after Fastlane and didn't get to see the end, but what I did see it was better than the last few years. Sadly it didn't matter since the numbers were down 16% from the previous year.
